Surprisingly good. I think the porter base was an excellent choice vs maybe a stout. A stout would have a lot more burnt flavors, be a little more rough around the edges. The porter allows the spices and barrel/rye whiskey character to shine. My only complaint is it was $14 per bottle.

Used to house pumpkin beers back in the day - was actually my favorite style for a few years.

Try to drink them still, but it’s tough. The spices kill me and give me heartburn.

Nationally, Elysian’s Punkuccino is still the best without a doubt. Loved it back then and still enjoy it now when I can get it.

Locally, Pizza Boy did a pumpkin version of Sunny Side Up a couple years ago that was great. Will be I on the lookout for that again.

Favorite pumpkin beer is the one in someone else’s glasses and not mine…..

Not a big fan but I do enjoy schlafly pumpkin ale as well as dog fish.

Anyone else notice the significant decrease in the selection of pumpkin beers on store shelves? Compared to last year, when I saw at least ten brands doing their own take, that is.

Perhaps breweries overestimated the demand last year?

I've noticed. The style also isn't promoted as much at the stores I frequent. They used to be centralized to one rack, now grouped with the brewery's other stuff. I still see the heavy hitters though - Pumking/Warlock, Elysian Night Owl, DFH Punk, etc. If I'm in the mood those are the only ones I care about anyway.

I have seen a good amount. I don’t drink these so I just walk by w/o checking names. I would guess at least 20 different brands.

I was at Trader Joe’s the other day and there is a sign saying pumpkin is here. Pretty much anything you can punkinize is there, no beer sold in this store though.

    Enjoy

Still plenty of pumpkin brews in my area of NE Ohio, including some new to the area - which are great, like Cigar City's Good Gourd and Schlafly's Pumpkin.....no shortage around here!

I also say there's plenty in the greater Cleveland area, if anything I've probably seen more than I did last year in Colorado

@FBarber beat me to it: it's about the same here.

I already purchased a mixed 12-pack of Elysian Pumpkin beers. It is sitting in my basement awaiting the cooler weather of October.

    Cheers!

Surprising only if you believe past production of pumpkin beer was equal to consumer demand.

Otherwise it's not surprising at all.

I don't drink them either but I've noticed surplus supply the last several years.
PumKing used to sell out quickly, now it sits & collects dust till it makes it to the bargain bin.
I think people got their fix of overly spiced beers. The novelty wore off.
Maybe the fact that it's 90* outside when they land on shelves has something to do with it?
Just saying, when & if I do drink a Pumpkin beer, I want it to be on Thanksgiving, when I'm half blitzed anyway & can't taste the nutmeg slapping my tonsils on the way down. Not at the beach in the sun.
Yes you can buy them now & hold on to them for a month or two, but if you're a stinker for brewery freshness, that is not an ideal situation.
I've tasted most of them available in this area, thanks to being on tap at my Pub, really liked none of them.
PumKing is about the only one I can choke down. Still don't care for it.
Too many things are pumpkin pie spiced these days. I think the novelty is wearing off?
I'd rather a Winter Warmer strong ale or Lager sans spices any day.
Lancaster Brewing Company makes a solid one. Luckily, they're right down the road.

There are still a ton of 'em on shelves in CO. Less than their peak 3-4 years ago, but no fewer than the last few years. At this point I know which ones I enjoy so I ignore the vast majority. Pumpkins are kinda like IPA's in that regard. I don't really have much reason to look beyond ones I already love, especially with smaller breweries charging more than larger ones.

Personally, Upslope and Eddyline always get my money. I like NB's Atomic Pumpkin this year, too. Those are all I need.

This. The DFH version i remember was pretty good but the infusion of pumpkin was tame compared to how the Southern Tier beers are made. Just looked back at my ratings of Pumpking and Warlock and i was way too kind. The taste reminded me of death and decay. Sorry Harley but i try to stay away from these!
    Cheers!

There are a ton of different pumpkin beers at my Wegmans. I’m not quite ready for them but I’m glad they’re are a lot for when I get around to buying them in October.

There’s huge displays of pumpkin beer set up at my local stores. I would venture to say possibly ever more so than in past years. Plenty to try this year. Cheers.
