Had a particular kid in mind, not one of mine, when I reached for this tonight. Devil Child from Evil Twin.

Sweeter than I prefer, the maple and vanilla dominate. There is some caramel, toffee, and just a hint of raisin in the background at least. Not bad overall.

Really nice offering from local Porper Brewing..this English Barleywine was aged in Pinot Noir barrels. The barrel cuts back any sweetness and dried fruit which I typically look forward to but don't miss here...A real nice brew

I have a bottle of that Woodford Reserve Double Oak and it’s fantastic. I can see why it would impart some very intense flavors

I've got a bottle too and I love it. I don't drink a lot bourbon but that one tickles me just right.

    Gabe Fletcher from Anchorage says,

I use a lot of double-oak-bourbon barrels—that is, it was the second barrel for a bourbon. It’s the best of both worlds because you’ve taken this bourbon that’s been aged for four, six, eight years, and then you put it into a fresh barrel for just one year, and then you empty it. So, you’re getting this fresh oak plus old bourbon inside—it’s the best flavor combination. You get the most impact. Those are some of my favorite barrels to find.

Tree House Tree of Light is a barrel-aged barleywine made from stand-out barrels carefully selected from our barrel program aged 16-32 months. A product of time, patience, and carefully studied brewing acumen, this beer is over a decade of learned experience in the making.

Glad to finally try a straight up barrel aged barleywine from Tree House. This reminded me of Grandpa as soon as I opened the bottle, bourbon and Werther's Original minus the Camel smoke greeted my nose. On the tongue this is mellow and profoundly good. Butterscotch, toffee, and a trace of chocolate liqueur provide a nice base for the rich bourbon additions. I get a little oaky tobacco at the finish. Very nice.

Im back with a treat for this thread! This is Goose Island Small Batch 4 Wheatwine, aged in bourbon barrels for 2 years and clocks in at 15% ABV!!
This beer is courtesy of @FBarber as part of his amazing box from English Premier League Fantasy.
    THANK YOU!!

    onto my review:

Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Drink by March 07 2024 on the label. consumed 9-10-2022.
The beer pours a clear yet dark mahogany color with some rich garnet highlights when I hold my glass to a light source. A dense, yet short lived khaki colored head of 1 cm foams up. This foam is a sturdy edge layer soon after the pour, with one large spinning island in the center of the glass.
Aroma is rich, malty and robust. I get toffee and caramel, brown sugar and bourbon soaked fruit, raisins and pears to my nose. I do get some dry wooden toothpicky type notes on the aroma as well. Generally pretty boozy nose, with a little bit of fusol note mixed in with the other complex mix.
First sip reveals a medium body with sticky texture and fine, tingly carbonation. The beer definitely coats my lips and palate with each sip.
Flavor is robust also and complex, with malt driven notes. I get brown sugar and toffee and dark fruit. Here are raisins and again pears, with a good hit of bourbon and some sweeter vanilla notes. There is a little bit of dry wooden note in the background. I never detect any hop character and the booze flavor is present, but no warmth or heat. Could be dangerous based on lack of boozy warmth.
Very nice sweet sticky wheatwine. Glad to have tried this one!

Rye Barrel Brick Kiln from Jackie O's. Aged for 17 months in rye whiskey barrels.

Poured at fridge temp, but allowed to warm up a little bit in the glass. Pours a very dark brown with a thin layer of head. Lots of tiny bubbles throughout. The nose is exceptional. Immediately getting brown sugar, toffee, a touch of maple, raisins, malts, rye, and some figs.

The taste is fantastic. Sweet, but not too sweet. Rye whiskey comes through nicely here. It's delicate - not harsh at all. Raisins, plums, toffee, maple, a slight nutty note, and some vanilla. Really tasty. Very smooth and nicely integrated. It's sweet overall, but again not too sweet. The rye is fantastic with this one.

Overall, a wonderful barleywine and another success from Jackie O's. Cheers!

They are right up there at the top for me. Their stouts and barleywines are fantastic. My wife is from Ohio, so I visit the brewery in Athens (and now Columbus) when we visit family. And having distribution here over the past year or so has been wonderful.

La Trinidad El Pedro Barleywine from Brewfist in Italy. Aged for a year in Pedro Ximenez barrels.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky dark orange with almost no head. The nose is dominated by sherry. Apricots, peaches, a hint of toffee, a floral note, and a slight smoky note. Really interesting and definitely a departure from the typical barleywine nose.

The taste is...interesting. A collision between sherry and grapefruit peel, with a touch of pine needles. To say this is different is an understatement. The smoky note appears here again. A bit of leather, honey dew, caramel, tannins, and a floral note. The mild bitterness mixes really nicely with the sweet sherry. Honestly, this grows on me as it warms up a bit. Very enjoyable.
