A paradox- barleywine is life but life comes first:thinking_face:

I have been catching up on this thread, and I love this blind / unknown beer swap and reveal.
I mean ive traded for a box of local barleywines before, no brand chosen.

Ive done blind tastings of the same style different breweries with friends in house.

But this blinded Barleywine swap is the coolest beergeekery I have seen in a while!
    I love it!

Kudos to @DIM and @Beersnake1 for sheer awesomness!

It has been fun so far! I will be opening a mystery beer tomorrow and will continue through the weekend. I don't think I have ever been this excited about beer! @DIM - feel free to suggest an order to the tasting!

So this mystery barleywine is not very mysterious, that distinctive wax drip can only mean Fremont and silver wax means an anniversary beer. They very sensibly switched from stout to barleywine for their 13th anniversary, clearly a quality operation at work here. Mystery or no, I am extremely excited that @Beersnake1 generously included this in our trade because I am a big fan of Fremont's barrel program!

Very nice and very different than the brew-k series I've tried. Up front is sweet with strong honey and golden raisins with a hint of maple. Nice, warming bourbon soon joins the fray and takes this next level. There is something else that emerges towards the middle that I don't have a word for. Something almost savory? Booze I haven't tried? The finish dries out a bit with light, leafy bitterness and charred oak plus a little powdered cherry. Really glad I got to try this one, it's quite a treat!

The reveal is not a surprise-

Thanks so much for this one! I'm up for trying anything from Fremont's barrel room, another winner here.

Nice! I kinda figured it wouldn’t be a big surprise, but had to include one. I actually haven’t tried it yet! I will soon! Glad you liked this one. I will be opening one of yours shortly.

Mystery beer #2 from the box that @DIM sent! Poured at fridge temp. Pours a really nice reddish-brown with a thin layer of off-white head. The nose is super smooth and fruit forward. Apricots, raisins, clove, toffee, and maple candy. Barrel? I definitely get some hints of bourbon barrels, but it's not overly strong (at least on the nose). I'm thinking a short aging. Let's get to the taste. Wow. Really good! Generally follows the nose. Toffee bursting at the seams. I'm getting the bourbon vanilla notes, along with a ton of fruit. Figs, apricots, honey, oranges, big malts, bread, and a strong sweetness throughout. No trace of hops. This, to me, is a classic barrel-aged English barleywine.

    ABV? I'm thinking between 10 and 11%

    The reveal
: Gimme the Munichwine from Barreled Souls and Heist Brewery! Wow. ABV is 13.8% - I was way off there. I definitely thought there was a bourbon barrel-aging, but I was wrong again! Maybe the super high ABV gave that boozy suggestion?

@DIM - this is incredible! Barreled Souls is amazing and I am feeling very lucky that you included this. Thank you!

@DIM - just read your review of the Munichwine - looks like I liked it a bit more than you! I totally get your comment about it carrying a hefeweizen vibe. Hindsight is 20/20 - I'm now sipping thinking to myself "wow, I totally get the feeling that this is a hefeweizen!". Haha.

So glad to hear you liked that one, I need to try more from Barreled Souls for sure! I thought it was pretty unique but apparently a few places are making a Munichwine. The kiddos loved Maine so we might go back next year.

I included that one because you commented that it sounded interesting when I posted it in this thread. Interesting indeed and I did like it, but maybe it wasn't quite what I was expecting? I wonder if my perceptions would have been different had I gone in with no preconceived notions?

That's the beauty of a blind tasting! I honestly think all new beers should be reviewed this way. I buy a beer that is aged in sherry barrels and I immediately look for those sherry notes. Would they be there if I hadn't known, or would I simply think it was a fruity note? Same goes for rye - I immediately look for that rye spicy note if I know it's there. Anyway, I clearly got this one wrong as I thought it might have been aged in bourbon barrels!

I swung and missed yesterday as well:joy:

I might ask my wife to pick and pour for me sometimes going forward so I can do more blind deciphering. You are spot on about looking for what's on the label.

Good idea! Given how much my beer is "intruding", my wife would be very happy to open one (or 20) beers and hand them to me. Tomorrow it is!

If I had access that would be my go to, so dang good, sensibly packaged in 12oz containers, and fairly priced.

Despite a fairly muted bourbon presence and substantial departure from the character of some of my favorites, it’s grown on me quickly. Very glad it started showing up here recently, and sitting on a shelf next to the maple version makes it seem even more affordable.

That looks really tasty. Can't recall ever seeing that brewery around here but maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
