I'm not a pumpkin beer drinker at all maybe one or two that's all but my wife wants the pumpkin pack knowing she will only drink or or two and I'll be stuck with it. But 30 bucks. Holy shit. Maybe I'm out of the loop about beer these days.

A purchased the Elysian Pumpkin mixed 12-pack a few weeks ago at my local Wegman's supermarket for around 20 bucks which seemed like a reasonable price to me.

I have not opened the pack yet; I will do so starting sometime in October.

    Cheers!

Have you experimented with a homebrewed pumpkin beer? I'd be interested to know especially since you like older styles of beer and pumpkin has been used since the 1700s in colonial brewing.

$30? Where’d you get it from? I saw it for $20.

    $30/12pk?
    You're getting screwed.
But a few singles to please the wife and spend the rest on something good.

    The short answer is no.

    The longer answer:

Using pumpkin as a fermentable is often described as providing a bland flavor. American Colonial era brewers (most beer was produced by homebrewers then) would use pumpkin, squash, molasses, etc. to augment their brewing since barley malt was often a purchased item and for economics reasons they would use other 'stuff' they had on hand to save money. For the situation of contemporary brewing of beers branded as pumpkin beer it really is all about the spicing (e.g., cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice,...) which provides a beer that reminds the drinker of pumpkin pie.

If I ever would decide to homebrew a pumpkin beer it would be of the contemporary variety where the beer would be all about the spicing (I likely would just purchase McCormicks Pumpkin Pie spice which is an amalgamation of spices) and maybe not add any pumpkin at all since it doesn't really add much to the beer (and just complicates the mash/lauter since it would be a gooey mess).

    Cheers!

It's $19.50+ tax at my local. Perhaps that store was dabbling in a bit of price gouging?

What’s included in the pack, and do these guys still taste the same? A lot has changed up there since I traded for these years ago

We spent a few seasons chasing pumpkin beers as newbies, and one of the local brewers told us that pretty much no pumpkin beer actually contained pumpkin, because those beers release far before the annual pumpkin crop matures, and that they use butternut squash (if anything) and spices instead.

Yes, the Pumpkin beers that are out now are brewed using non-fresh pumpkins since they were brewed a month+ ago and pumpkins were not mature then.

And while some commercial brewers might use non-pumpkin ingredients (e.g, squash) there are some breweries who do indeed use pumpkin (canned I presume) in brewing their pumpkin beers. For example Dogfish Head uses some pumpkin ("pumpkin meat") to brew Punkin Ale:

"A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, organic brown sugar and spices."

    Cheers!

Get a six-pack of Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale, if they have it in your area. Neither of you will regret it. Excellent beer at a reasonable price. (Around $10, last I checked. They yanked it from distro here. :slight_frown:)

As an added bonus, it's not AB-InBev.

Night Owl: Our original pumpkin ale, brewed with pumpkin, roasted and raw pumpkin seeds, and spiced in conditioning with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice.

The Great Pumpkin: The Great Pumpkin is the world's first Imperial pumpkin ale! It's packed with pumpkin and roasted pumpkin seeds, and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice.

Dark O' the Moon: Dark o' the Moon Pumpkin Stout is spookily smooth and chocolatey with a touch of cinnamon.

Punkuccino: A pumpkin ale with the attitude of a world-weary barista, Punkuccino packs a short shot of Stumptown coffee in your pint with just a shake of cinnamon and nutmeg.

    Night Owl: 6.7% ABV.
    The Great Pumpkin: 8.4% ABV.
Dark O' the Moon: 7.5% ABV.
    Punkuccino: 6% ABV.
