This is a classic example of that BA post you want to equally like and dislike.

I remember seeing some posts about Orin, but not enough to really understand this beer. Checked Untappd, and that was exceptionally unhelpful.

Anyone able to provide some feedback on what the drinking experience for this beer is really like? I thought I recalled people saying this was more like a BW, although the can says 'Old Ale'. Any additional helpful information is appreciated.

    According to BJCP:

I'm pretty sure this Old Ale is pretty strong and rich though, might as well be a barleywine, just a tad darker than the classic examples.

-If @GuyFawkes is not excited, that should tell you all you need to know about the beer.

Orin is a spectacular beer for its style, however, I don’t want to drink it any more than I want to drink a barrel aged monkey poo that is an exemplar to the style.

Reminiscent of a barleywine would be a fair descriptor. It's kind of a unique beer, but it's delicious and worth trying.

It tastes like dill pickle to me.

I like Old Ales, generally; Bois from the Bruery is one of my all-time favorites. I just don't like this one very much.

I'll add: Sweet. Dry fruitiness. Raisin. Burnt sugar. Barrel. Very thin. I like HA but when it comes to Orin just wait until next month for an actual barleywine in SJ over at Rev. :grimacing:

I have enjoyed Orin from a few different releases over the years. Very solid and I like the multiple barrel treatment it has received in previous vintages. I feel like Orin is more of an American Strong Ale than an English Olde Ale to me.

And yes, it's very confusing to research this beer. I feel your pain and have been there as well.

Orin isn't a barleywine - I was just saying it's somewhat similar to one as a point of reference for someone who might not be familiar with old ale ... certainly closer to a barleywine than a stout.

"Had .5 ounces. Pretty meh. 4.75"

Very much agreed on this point.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've had old ales before, but they seem to run the gamut (I mean, I guess all styles do, but..). All the feedback has been super helpful. I guess the bottom line for me is, "It'd be great to try 1 can".

I'm aware, but it is barleywine-ish. I was simply stating all drinking Orin did was make me wish I was drinking a more traditional (and better!) Barleywine...Ala SJ.

This is where we as a community have shot ourselves in the foot somewhat - years ago there might have been a decent chance of finding a pour on draft somewhere cool and convenient. I bet HA will keep this to themselves, although cans will hopefully see some distro.

I’ve enjoyed it in the past, but agree these days I’d rather just have barleywine. If I see it in cans I may pick up a single or two pack if that’s an option.

I thought Orin did go out in 2-packs?

It always has hit distro in 2 packs since they changed to cans. And any shops where you have previously bought singles of any cans will also have this one as a single.

Dang, I thought we were all friends here. I personally really enjoy Orin. It comes off as very BA barleywine to me. That 2020 Brandy Barrel Orin was spectacular.

Defiantly puts 2021 Orin can in fridge.

Screw you guys, I'm drinking Orin.

EDIT: now if we're talking the Cherry-Cola Orin, we're all on the same page here. Checks notes, and I quote, "Freshly turned earth and decaying leaves. Smells slightly better than it tastes. I still love you regular Orin."

I have no doubt that your profound love and review(s) is likely one of my reasons for recalling that people liked this beer, and that it was BW-esq. Now that you've reminded me, that helps influence my decision a bit more.
