Something has intrigued me since I started buying beer online direct from breweries for later in-person pickup. I’m pretty sure every time I’ve done this, or even just checked what beers a brewery currently has in stock for online purchase, I get redirected to a different URL associated with that brewery. I’m sure there is a good reason for this but I’ve always been curious about it. With most other commerce websites you just order directly and seamlessly from the site, or at least externally that’s what it looks/feels like (maybe you go from http to https, but it’s not especially noticeable). But with breweries there seems to be this “digital wall” between the main brewery site and its sales site—and I’ve wondered if there’s a legal or some other reason for this. Cheers!

I was recently thinking about this myself. I noticed that the sites from which people pre-order beer for later pick up were similar design/set up regardless of which brewery to which they were connected. My initial thought was that brewers may not have the knowledge or staff to get an online ordering procedure up and running and there is probably some company out there that one can hire to do it. But I'm just guessing.

I assume this is due to the resources and size of the brewing company. Rather than going through the process of hiring people to build an online store that lives on their site... and having a site that could accommodate a store in the first place, they are building one by going through a web company that offers easy and low-cost online stores that are separate from the main site. I could be way off - I have no experience with this.

These answers make sense and provide a good explanation. Actually, I just went to the Reuben’s Brews (Seattle) site—hoping to see Fresh Hop Double Crush, one of my favorite fresh hop beers from last year—and when I clicked the “shop” link I was rerouted to this URL: https://reubens-brews.square.site/

So, in this case at least, it appears that Square is the company managing/hosting Reuben’s Brews’ online commerce presence.

@Providence , I think my brain froze when I read your post. If my head was functioning properly, I wouldn't have bothered adding my post after yours.

If people's brains were functioning properly 90% of the posts on these boards would be gone.

Toast Tab and Square seem to be the most common ones I come across. As has already been mentioned, I’m assuming these are third party hosting sites that provide a template layout that allows to brewery to just upload the skus as they release them. I’m sure they process the payments as well. Cheers.

Toast and Square also provide a lot of breweries' and restaurants' point-of-sale systems (iPads, card readers & whatnot). The online store is another product/service those companies offer, one which has the benefit of being fully integrated with their on-site sales.
