Since you are the one who got me onto slack tide and you made the other comparisons where do you put this against knockdown??

I think I give slight edge to Big Hoppy cause of the bigger pine and I’m bias toward lower abv. However…knock knockdown’s abv down a tad or cover up the hint of alcohol I noticed in it and it may win.

Lucky Envelope - Fresh Hop Strata IPA

16oz can served in a shaker pint. 09/19/22. Bought it at RidgeWood.

Pours clear light yellow with a small head and a ton of active carbonation. Smell is fresh hop goodness and pine, grapefruit and lemon mixed in.

Taste is a bit more muted than the aroma. More lemon/lemon zest, leans toward bitterness.

Mouthfeel is light, clean. Overall...it's a good WCIPA with a nice fresh hop aroma, but I'd like it to showcase more of that same character in the flavor, too.

The bottle shop moved upstairs last year (?). They do sell singles but in general the selections overall seem less than when they were downstairs.
Beer Menus show it at Giulianos. They're a deli/ sandwich shop in Glenside. The owners and staff are serious about their beer. I find it a go- to place for semi- hard to find stuff, and they often have the best price around.

16 ounce, canned this past week.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 3/4 inch off white head over a copper colored body with sticky lacing and nonstop bubbles.

Nose of malt that's a bit roasty, a bit toasty, with a little bit of spice.

Taste mirrors nose nicely with hints of caramel and a moderate hop bitterness.
    Very tasty, indeed!

    Feel is excellently full-bodied.

Overall, a solid representation of the style and one to look out for.
    Don't sleep on this one!
    Cheers!!

A couple of beers tonight, first up is a beer from a brewery I visited in SoCal nearly three years ago. It was magnificent, and I had to take out a small business loan to cover the haul I made back in December 2019.

Right before the Rona shoe dropped, @woemad and @BBThunderbolt.

Seriously, though, I’m pumped to try this beer because the brewery is world class, IMHO. Let’s see where this hazy takes me.

Pours a very hazy straw color with a foamy white head that laces the glass nicely. Spicy, dank citrus notes on the nose, with passion fruit, mango, and ripe grapefruit most prominent.

That passion fruit is forward and delicious on the front of the palate, with the mango and ripe grapefruit following, and a really nice creamy oat flavor on the smooth finish. Absolutely delicious and highly poundable at 8.5% ABV.

The mouthfeel is full and has a bit of a bite. This is my hazy sweet spot, very juicy, but not too soft. I need to make another visit to Monkish.

Bentonvillle Lawyers, Hogs & Money Traditional Bock, 7.1% ABV; 4.09 overall

Pours an effervescent caramel with 2 fingers of tan head. Zero head retention & lacing
S: Cakey, toasty, some smokey notes as well

T: Cakey, toasty, with woody hops & a little brown sugar & dryness up front. Toasty, dry with some woody hops & caramel as this warms. Finishes dry, toasty with caramel & cakeyness

    MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation

Very well done Bock. This brewery usually does a good job & this is no exception

Poured from a 16 ounce can dated 7/12/22 into a tulip glass.

Look- Yellow/orange, opaque, large visible particulate, granular residue on glass walls, no head/head retention or lacing.

Smell- Lemon, mango, lime, very fragrant.

Taste- Lemon, lime, mango, slight vanilla, sour, sweet, extremely flavorful.

Feel- Full body, smoothie like, moderately sour, highly mouth coating, below average carbonation, sweet finish.

Overall- Vibrant bouquet and big lemon/lime flavors. Very robust smoothie like body. Different from my normal style choice, but very enjoyable.

    Good evening NBW
I wasn't planning on a new beer today, but Mrs Jkblr was in the mood for a pumpkin beer.
    Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale
12oz undated bottle split with Mrs Jkblr. Poured into a tiny becher glass at fridge temp 7% ABV. The beer pours bright medium amber with khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and little else. The aroma is lots of spice, especially cinnamon. The taste is semisweet pumpkin with a full complement of pie spice (cinnamon and nutmeg jump out) with nearly no bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good version of a pumpkin pie ale.

    Cheers all!

The weekend is coming to an end, it was a cold and dreary one here but from the comfort of home it isn't half bad. So many of you were opening appropriate darker beers today I decided to join the party. I sent this beer to at least one of you in the BIF, so now I join in trying myself.

This one is an imperial milk porter with syrup aged in Texas sotol barrels, never even heard of them until now. It definitely gives this beer a uniqueness to it and it works very well.

Kane - Single Cask - Barrel One

Like many of these beers look isn't much to write about black in color, short lived light brown head that leaves a decent ring around the glass.

Nose is very unique; it's got this really distinct woody spice smell to it, sawdust like but from a good smelling wood; along with some mapley chocolate.

The taste throws another curveball as it adds an almost tequila/agave like bite to the aforementioned wood. The maple is very well done; balanced but present and it finishes with a creamy milk chocolate.

It drinks very smooth and creamy; there is minimal heat but it is there in the nasal canal after each sip; it is pleasantly warming. Some char driven bitterness that is very welcome shows on the finish, far from super sweet the maple just gives it a nice finish.

This is a very cool and distinct tasting beer; I'm not sure I'll ever encounter sotol or a sotol barrel aged beer but if I'm ever in Texas maybe I should look around.

Hope you all have a great week and I look forward t

Okay, I’ll post this to the Oktoberfest tasting thread in a bit, but NBS is a priority.
First, I always appreciated the big Fest glasses so I got one.
Second, I think I know why Germany moved from Märzen style to Festbier- multiple liters of 5.9% beer might mess you up. It would me!
But- just one liter? Dang close.
Poured that beautiful warm amber and sported a tall manilla head that took its sweet time to dissipate.
The aroma was pleasant enough, but my nose just couldn’t define anything there. (Xylol is nasty stuff and will mess up your nose)
The taste was good, caramel and bread and malts and yeast and no bitterness at all. Just wave after wave of Märzen goodness, though 2 bottles likely would have sufficed.
The feel was excellent, cannot complain. Was able to quaff it fairly quickly and easily with my dinner of lentil stew.
Good Märzen, not the favorite, but the one I had enough to fill that glass with!
    Prost!

Pours a ruddy brown color with rusty tinges and a tan head that sizzles and evacuates the premises instantaneously. The nose has toffee, stone fruit, some barrel notes, and loads of strawberries. Like a metric ton of strawberries.

The strawberries are preeminent on the taste, with toffee and oak and a bit of booze for good measure. I’m not a “chugger,” but I could beer bong a tall boy of this - it is that quaffable at 14.2% ABV. I almost rated this a 5.0 on taste, which I’ve only done once before (Surly Abrasive 8 or 9 years ago).

The mouthfeel is rich and slightly prickly, which I didn’t expect. What a phenomenal flavor ride this beer is.

Long, long walk in the woods with the grandson today. He's a chatterbox, so I've given up trying to enjoy the quiet. He's confident enough to explore on his own some, but every once in a while I hear "Papa?", as he likes being in sight. At one point he says we should sit down in a nice spot and, ya know, talk about things like nature and life and stuff. Apparently that is the secret recipe for a quiet interlude - reminded me of the Harrison Ford/Sean Connery scene on the blimp in The Last Crusade...

    Tonight's volunteer:

Oxbow Brewing Super Saison, a 9.5% brew using Maine ingredients and whole leaf hops.

Ain't gonna lie...I overflowed this bad boy. Enormous soapy head with great retention, falling to about a quarter inch cap above the burnished gold liquid. Fairly turbid.

There's a bit of alcohol smell at first, but it doesn't persist. There's quite a bit going on. Fruit bread in a good way? Bready and yeasty, then some green apple, a little citrusy lemon and a bit of orange, a little hay, a tad bit of banana, all topped off with coriander and some clove. A very faint funk.

The taste flips the script a little. Definite bready and yeasty underpinnings, but the spice asserts itself pretty quickly and it is fairly strong. Once that calms down, the fruit kicks in. Banana stronger than the nose suggests, lemon/orange zest, slightly sweet pear, green apple - all nicely aromatic flavors not necessarily sensed on the tongue. The spice fades for a while as this plays out, but the bready bit carries through. When you think it's done playing, the coriander and clove emerge again and put a decent "sting" on the tongue. Weaving in with all this is an ever so light funk and a hay note and I get a woody taste suggesting oak...hmmm...all the Oxbow site offers is that it uses Maine grown ingredients and whole leaf hops, so not sure where that comes from.

It's fairly light bodied, and the alcohol is well hidden but there is a nice warmth going on. Carbonation is pretty lively, bitterness is barely a sensation. Not overly drying, but the spice does accumulate some, adding to the warm sensation.

I'm a fan of the unbounded, loosely defined Farmhouse ales to begin with and I'm certainly diggin' this one. It's fun and funky, well made with deep but restrained flavors, lots going on, seems very much Belgian- influenced, very smooth and drinkable for a high octane Farmhouse ale. Easy 4.2 or so, and a fantastic offering from Oxbow.

Fort George - Rock, Paper, Chinook fresh hop pale ale

16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated 09/13/22. Bought it at Ridgewood.

Pours a clear golden-amber with a fairly small head and a ton of active carbonation. Smell is vaguely fruit-cuppy, a little floral.

Taste is toward melon, stronger floral, fruit-cuppiness is still there, maybe a hint of bubble gum.

Mouthfeel is light, almost thin. Overall, this is a pretty good beer.
