So I've only just this year gotten into beer, and alcohol in general for that matter, and as I always do with new interests I've been trying anything and everything I can get my hands on and I'm learning 2 things. 1, I really like wheat beers and 2, anything I identify as a favorite gets immediately discontinued by the state liquor department and if it happens to be 5% there no way I've found to figure out what stores might have it.

Are there any resources out there that anyone knows of that I'm missing? Utah specific communities? Anything? It's hard enough being not-into-hoppy-IPAs these days, it'd be nice if I could figure out where to get the 3 beers in existence that aren't IPA (I'm being dramatic of course)

So on that note, has anyone seen Franziskaner Weissbier anywhere?

Also, any belgian white / weissbier / hefeweizen / etc in the SLC area that anyone really likes?

    What's wrong with IPA's?

Maybe this person is not a fan of them. They're one of my least favorite styles, and I feel this person's pain in trying to find something besides IPAs available to purchase these days.

Just not my personal preference. I've liked a few but usually they are just too bitter for me. I'm not trying to say there's anything wrong with them. I just have different preferences
I just finished a case of wasatch ghost rider white IPA in fact, and I liked it quite a bit. Again, I was being a bit hyperbolic saying that everything out there is IPA. It can just feel like that sometimes when you're a person who just wants a hefeweizen and there's like 1 option on the shelf and an endless sea of IPA choices.

I didn't like IPA's when my wife first introduced them to me as her facorite beer style, but after a few years of drinking craft beer, had to admit she was right.

I definitely recognize that beer tastes are an evolving thing and I'm sure someday I'll be right there with you. I think I just need a few years of my own. In the meantime, I'm definitely in the belgian camp.

This will definitely come in handy. I'm sorry if this was somewhere in the FAQs... I'll have to sift through the comments for these locations and see what I can find. I think I just need to find a place that likes to stock German imports

I was too when I started. Maybe you will, maybe you won't evolve. Threre's no right or wrong answer (as an IPA lover, I was sort of pulling your leg). Some people marry their first girlfriend and are quite happy. Others go through quite a few before they find the right one. Cheers and good luck.

I was also in Zion last week. We brought our beers up to Utah from Flagstaff.

You just had to look under places.

You might also try doing a thread search for Utah in this forum. There may be some threads about regional Utah beer. Apologies in advance on behalf of my PNW brethren as to how often your results will include us talking about Georgetown's Johnny Utah.

Haha! I got the leg pulling. It's still beneficial to just verbalize what I'm thinking, if anything just for myself. I hope you enjoyed Zion! It certainly is... busy these days haha! (I grew up down that way.. sorta. More by capitol reef)

I saw the places section, I guess I didn't land on the UT specific page. Anyway, thanks! Searching "utah" is disappointing and I did notice all the PNW threads and wondered why haha! That explains it.

Do you have any breweries local to you?

Yeah. We have some pretty good ones actually. But my more specific issues are finding imports and specific things at the stores. Utah is weird and the stock issues are just hard to navigate.

Yeah finding imports is an issue nationwide. And getting things you want stocked is even more of a problem for states with state run stores. I don't have any experience with the Utah market, but what little I've heard makes it sound like Utah is going to have even more limitations due to the states alcohol laws and culture.

I see.. well at least I know it's not just Utah haha! We've actually been loosening up a bit more the last 5 years or so. It used to be only 3.2% beer in stores, now it's 5%, they are piloting some kind of online ordering thing at the state liquor stores. But yeah... sometimes it's like "you want that certain drink? Too bad."

Check out Templin Family brewing. They make a lot of traditional lagers and other non-IPAs. They make a solid light Hefeweizen.

The state store suck so don’t waste too much time.

I’m relying on beer mail, friends and traveling for plenty of beers outside of Utah.

If you want to complain about not being able to find German imports, you'll have plenty of company from around the US on this site:smile:

But really, your best bet is probably to seek out local alternatives and possibly even make your interest known to local brewers. Considering the strain on the general supply chains globally I am expecting that imports are going to get worse in the near term.

I've never heard of Templin but I just looked and they have several that sound really good to me!

Beer mail? Is that from friends and family? We can't order online can we?

I've found some good local stuff. It's just weird here because you can't take anything home from a "restaurant" which is what the breweries are so what I get to take home all depends on what the state or grocery stores decide to stock. And grocery stores can't carry anything that's over 5% so that cuts a lot of the special batch stuff. That's why I was hoping to find some Utahns here who might know some magical grocery store that just has everything (that's under 5%). Really wishful thinking
