Adroit Theory has a good share of flavored stouts that it has been producing for years, but they often build them off a base stout, for example, off the Dia De Los Muertos you had. Because they make so many, they run the gamut of sweetness, but I've found more often than not the base beer comes through pretty well. Death of Cthulhu comes to mind as a stout with additions (marshmallow and seaweed involved, as I recall) that is first and foremost a stout. Which also reminds me that I haven't seen them produce in a while.

Always so many beautiful colors in pickled veggies thanks for sharing. I gotta remember to ask in the next week or so to see how they are.

Never heard of or thought to ferment just pepper, it’s got me very intrigued.

[IMG] Poured into a 20 oz tulip glass with a 2 plus finger sticky khaki head, with excellent retention and leaves behind some thin lines of lace. 4.75

Aroma is oaked vanilla, biscuit, toffee, caramel, fig, and rye whiskey. 4.5

Taste follows woody vanilla, toffee, caramel, biscuit, fig, and some smooth whiskey in the long lingering finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above average, soft gentle carbonation, not actually dry, and at 10.5% it drinks much bigger, but still very approachable. Kettlehead Brewing really impressive again. 4.5 Cheers all.

Stonecloud Brewing's A$AP Hoppy Experimental Hazy DIPA, 8.0% ABV; 4.01 overall

Pours a slightly hazed honey color with 3 fingers of pillowy ivory colored head. Floaties as the can is emptied. great head retention & lacing, but major deductions for the snow storm going on inside my glass

    S: Cakeyness, lemons & tangerines

T: Tangerines, dryness, a little pink grapefruit & passion fruit up front. More pink grapefruit, passion fruit & a touch of peaches as this warms. Finishes with passion fruit, tangerine, dryness & green melon & grapefruit, another one on the verge of getting a 4.5

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, nice balance

Drinks so easy, nice flavor, not a big fan of all the floaties

William Street Brewery Wheat King IPA.

Pours a dark copper with ample head that dissipates slowly. Not the most attractive colour.

The aromas are of sweet malts primarily. Some evergreen peaks through as well. A little herbal note sits in behind.

Nice caramel start with a good deal of resinous hops following and a strong bitter finish.

    Medium body.

This is a beer unlike any I’ve had locally (1.5 hour drive) in a good long while. An IPA in the manner of a decade or more past. I’ve never had anything from William Street before, but look forward to trying the Oktoberfest and farmstead lagers I picked up from them as well.

    Cheers!

Soul & Spirits Brewing ( Memphis ) Smoke Stack Smoked Dark Lager, 5.8% ABV; 4.01 overall

Pours a very effervescent hazel color with 4+ fingers of tan head ( guess a gentle pour was in order ). Above average head retention & slightly less better lacing

S: Smells like a classic Rausch Bier, a little butterscotch

T: Smokeyness, a little caramel & dryness up front, pretty roasty. Some sweet juicy fruit notes that I tend to pick up in a lot of smoked beers, roastyness & plenty of smoke as this beer warms. Finishes pretty dry, roasty & smokey with a slight treacle sweetness

MF: Medium body, gentle carbonation, Carbonation picks up as this warms

Pretty solid offering, the first can didn't strike me that way, maybe not cool enough

First new beer for today is Dark Lager from Roof of Africa Craft Brewery in Windhoek, Namibia.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown - semi transparent. Off-white head that slowly dissipates. The nose is very malty. Fine toffee, freshly baked bread, stone fruit, grain, slight mineral note, and a hint of spice.

The flavor is a blast on the palate. I expected this to be fairly light on the intensity, but it's right up in your face. Sweet toffee dominates, with bread, nuts, stone fruit, spice, and slight roasted malts note. To be honest, the sweetness kind of dominates and pushes down the other flavors. I would have liked more balance.

The mouthfeel is light and crisp. Easy drinking for sure. Overall, a nice lager.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned sometime this week. Pours a very attractive hazy yellow with a half finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of thin streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.75

Aroma is mandarin, cantaloupe, passionfruit, blueberry, and apricot. 4.5

Taste follows mandarin, passionfruit, cantaloupe, blueberry, and apricot. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above average, soft gentle creamy carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 8.4% ABV huge flavor and insanely drinkable. 5

Overall this is the first time TDH this gem and I hope it is not the last. Excellent stuff as I expect from this style and this brewery. 4.5 Cheers all.

Good day BAs! Back for the NBS part on NBW. Just gonna jump right in and get it over:

Cheat Day Cherry Cheesecake from Rusty Rail. Purchased at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, 03/10/22. $ 4.50 (Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.282/oz). In reefer at store, stored at 40 degrees at home. Reviewed 09/10/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Served at 44.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King Snifter. Final temperature 49.6 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), opaque.
Body – Peach, opaque. Under direct light, same but the liquid appears filled with near-microscopic particles. When rear-lite, peach and translucent.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), white with a touch of pink, high density, diminishing to a four mm crown with an occasional seven mm peak and a rocky partial cap.
Lacing – Poor. A few pieces of froth remain hanging on the glass as the level drops below half full.
Aroma – 3 – Virtually none. Distinctly no cherry, just a bit of weak generic stone fruit. No hops, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 3 – Follows nose. No malt, no yeast, no hops. No ethanol (5 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 2.75 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated can) If I really think about it, I can detect a bit of sourness, but contemplation fails to discover either cherry or cheesecake.

Rating 2.95, rDev 0% (First Review)

Now off to a better beer, ie any beer from Founders in my reefer!

Abomination x Mast Landing Ocean Monsters - NE-style IPA (6.5% ABV) with Citra, Strata, Simcoe, and Pacific Jade

Interesting blend of hop varietals. I don't think I particularly like Pacific Jade, based on limited experience, and Strata is far from my favorite, as well. Let's see!

This is a very solid, if unspectacular, offering from a brewery (Abomination) that does hazy IPAs very well. Ultimately, there isn't a ton going on, with notes of papaya, mango, and lemon. I like it, but I don't love it - but I don't regret the blind purchase of a 4-pack, either.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 Nordic pint glass I can’t figure out when it was actually canned. Pours a hazy yellow orange with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with nice retention. 4.25

Aroma is tangerine, pineapple, apricot, papaya, and grapefruit rind. 3.75

Taste follows tangerine, pineapple, apricot, papaya, and grapefruit. 3.75

Mouthfeel is above average, soft carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 10% it has big flavor and easy enough drinking. 4

Overall this is pretty good. This brewery keeps doing collaborations and not often great ones. Still won’t have any trouble finishing the last can. 3.75

Welcome one and all to New Beer Sunday #921! As promised, the second of two Midwest Oktoberfest Marzens. This one from Michigan, I believe it was distributed to states receiving their classic M-43 NEIPA (my favorite of the style, though I haven't had most from the actual NE).

    Old Nation Oktoberfest

    Can Notes:
$3.25 9/23 single 16 oz can purchase at store temperature from Beer on the Wall, refrigerated until this morning. 5.7% ABV, 18 IBU, best by date of 2/13/22. No canned date, guessing (hoping) 8/13/22. German Style Fest Lager. Brewed and canned by Old Nation Brewing Company, Williamston, Michigan.

Appearance: Multiple pours into a tall 0.5L mug. Long sustained head lingers for several minutes before leaving a creamy soapy white tan cover over the clear caramel base. Medium carbonation slows down after a minute. 4.25

    Aroma:
Caramel malt, light in strength, OK. 3.25

    Taste:
Taste a little stronger than the aroma, caramel malt, light bread. Good. 3.5

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, negligible carbonation. Drinks at the abv, felt a third of the way in. Hops felt without a notable taste component, leaving the beer balanced more hoppy than a typical Marzen. Lightly dry, clean finish. 3.75

    Overall:
This is an OK Marzen, more "American" than German. Not getting much flavor or aroma, what I do get is fine. 3.5

    Cheers!

My next new beer is a monster from Colorado! Anniversary 10 from River North. Big thanks to @beergoot for sending me a couple a while back in a trade. This is a triple barrel aged stout that comes in at a mind-boggling 22% ABV. Dang! Aged twice in bourbon and finished in Colorado whiskey.

I have this bottle in Africa as it was one that I was planning to open at a bottle share in Germany. We didn't get to it, unfortunately. I would have loved to share this monster.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours jet black with a slight rim of head. Not much carbonation, I don't think. Looks....powerful. The nose is insane. Very intense aromas of black licorice molasses, bourbon, roasted malts, decadent chocolate, vanilla, marshmallows, and some sweet toffee. The nose is just so smooth. Nothing sharp or off-balance here. The barrels certainly shine through and form the perfect marriage with the stout. The smell is off the charts for me.

The taste is equally as intense. Boozy? Hell yeah. This is a Black Tuesday on steroids. Right away I get that boozy burn as it goes down. There is no way to mask the 22% ABV here. That calms down after a few sips. This makes way for the big molasses, chocolate, vanilla, black licorice, blackberries, maple candy, oak, and very slight roasted malts. The latter is really hidden by the barrel influence. The taste is incredible.

The mouthfeel is big and viscous. Just insane. Overall, probably the best (or at least the top 3) stout I have had this year.

    Hey NBWs

    Luscious from Alchemist
British style imperial stout. 9.3 abv

Poured from a can with a best by date of 5/24 into a tulip glass. Dark brown almost black color, thick tan foamy head that eventually dissipates to a tan cap and thin soapy lacing

Aroma of roasted coffee and malt, some vanilla and a hint of chocolate

Taste is roasted coffee beans forward, vanilla and chocolate, I got a little butterscotch on the back end

Mouthfeel is well layered, on the thick and creamy side. There is an acidic coffee bite, chocolate notes and a lingering vanilla sweetness. There is a definite separation of flavors.

Overall this is a well crafted representation of the style, very nicely layered flavors and well balanced. A great drinking stout.

Sticking with NE IPAs brewed in CT, but nearly doubling the ABV.

    Tox Poltergeist DDH IIIPA

This is a home run - if you like the style. It's an imperial NE-style IPA through and through: low bite, low bitterness, super creamy, and very tropical. I personally prefer more WC-leaning IPAs, but I can appreciate the style, nonetheless, and this is an excellent example.
