You’re not alone. Most of the Barleywine I have drank would fall under the “English” style and the cloying mess most of them are has turned me off big time to a lot of them. With that being said, Mother of All Storms is a very well done beer and I enjoyed it thoroughly and rated it highly. I felt this beer was more balanced than many of its counterparts. Cheers!

Ughhhh!! I'm not sure which of those teams (Browns / Guardians)are cursed more? Someone needs to do a "bad mojo" cleansing of both teams. Someone made Jobu mad.

I'm hoping the Astros go down in defeat, too. I'm tired of 'em.

Good to know, I noticed a few, or many others didn’t quite like Barleywines for that reason.

I’m not the one who’ll annoy anyone about it though, there’s a Barleywines thread in BeerTalk and it’s good for those who appreciate it. As Jack said maybe I could find the odd one I’d like, otherwise I just don’t seek them out. Cheers!

I try not to “annoy” anyone with my style likes or dislikes. The many styles of beer allow for each of us to drink what we enjoy and pass on what we don’t. Cheers.

Truth, by that I meant I just don’t need to go post about it in every damn thread “Bleh, barleywine sucks”… to each their own. That’s why we have so many beer styles available. Cheers.

Good afternoon NBWers. Crystal clear autumn day after two consecutive real deal frosts. Garlic planted, asparagus ferns golden, all the leaves are down and in my gutters, and von Trapp Trösten seen and purchased. Snow must be soon!
Today's beer is Lawson’s Mad River Maple, 8% abv, canned 10/11/22.
Pours a brilliantly clear ruby/garnet beneath a creamy beige head. Shows lively rising bubbles. Very inviting. Initial aromas are caramel, marzipan, toasted whole grain bread, and cotton candy. First taste of real maple hard candy and vanilla bean, with some bitterness on back end that lingers with the maple. After first sip aroma presents earthy woods, and after first sips taste better balance earthy woods, toasted malt, and maple. Very smooth and quite hidden alcohol—no burn. Finish is dry. I dare say my brain is thinking Dr. Pepper , but that hasn’t crossed my palate in decades. This is an excellent beer though not one I would buy again for personal consumption. Lawson and crew deserve great credit for using maple syrup deftly. In my excitement to taste I forgot to photo the initial pour!

As in beer stores you meant?

Of course yes. We even have toilets and Wifi nowadays. :grinning:

Joking, yeah plenty of them, the Craft beer scene isn’t doing too bad, at the exception of French craft stouts I tried, I can even say we do have some great beers whatever the style.

United Breweries Taj Mahal Premium Lager, 4.5% ABV. Pours clear yellow with a 3-finger off-white head that left some lacing. Nose is malty. Taste follows, some grain, light hop bitterness. Decent mouthfeel, if a bit over-carbonated. Overall very good.

This one hails from India. Real nice Fall day here, got a lot of yardwork done. This one isn't the best, but still pretty refreshing.

    Fuller's - India Pale Ale

    English IPA from England (5.3%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with a large, frothy head and visible carbonation. Smells of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and citrus hops, with notes of grapefruit, as well as hints of pine.

Taste is a great balance of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and fruity, slightly resinous and spicy hops, with citrus notes of graoefruit and lime peel, as well as hints of black pepper and pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a nice English IPA with a good balance of malt and hops, sweetness and bitterness and strong, zesty citrus notes as well as hints of peppery spice and pine, finishing with a good bitterness, while there's a really nice mouthfeel to this as well. Very nice example of the style that goes down easy and drinks rather pleasantly, with a distinct, zesty grapefruit note lingering in the aftertaste.

    Fuller's - London Porter

    English Porter from England (5.4%)

Pours a deep, dark mahogany coloration with a ruby sheen when held up the light and a medium, creamy head. Smells of bready, roasted malt and chocolate, with just a hint of herbal hops as well.

Taste is a great balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, milk chocolate, much lighter dark/red fruit, with notes of raisin and cranberry and just a hint of coffee, licorice and earthy, herbal hops. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate and licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a very nice English Porter with distinct notes of roasted malt and chocolate and a great balance of sweet, roasted and bitter notes, with the roasted and bitter notes clearly dominating, just like I like it. Hints of drak/red fruit, coffee and licorice add a certain depth while earthy, herbal hops provide that certain bitterness to this. It's just a very well-balanced, easy drinking yet flavorfull example of the style with a good body and mouthfeel for the style as well.

Helping you out @Snowcrash000 let’s not allow the back to back to back posts last week people. This is a beer from @Coronaeus, he sent me a very generous box with some amazing beer and glass, coming tonight. Drank one of the hoppy offerings sent, figured I should take care of the other one too.

Red Tape - That Was Easy (5.3% pale ale)

Pours an orange hued color, cloudy but see through. Very good retention and some nice lacing.

Nose is malty with some candied orange citrus notes, some caramelization, and just a generic low sweet note.

Taste mirrors the nose with caramelize like malt and orange citrus notes. Malt is present and very well paired.

Light body, pithy citrus on the tongue, drying with low to medium bitterness.

This is a tasty well made pale ale, nice malt presence paired with classic hops.

I know what beer I’m opening next and I can’t wait for later…

Not the greatest picture but I took this early AM when I was out with the dog in backyard; the contrasting colors of fall.

Enigma - Hopnytized Kveik IPA V2

Kveik IPA with Mosaic, Citra and El Dorado hops, from Belgium (7%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and citrus/tropical/stone fruit hops, with hints of esters and notes of tangerine, watermelon, apricot and pear.

Taste is a good balance of light biscuity malt, fruity, grassy, slightly herbal hops and hints of fruity/spicy esters, with notes of tangerine, lime peel, watermelon, papaya, apricot, pear, clove, black pepper and lemongrass. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some tangerine, apricot, lemongrass and clove lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a pretty interesting Kveik IPA that I rather enjoyed despite not being a huge fan of the style in general. The hops and esters mesh together well here, making it difficult to figure out where one ends and the other begins, especially with a hop variety like El Dorado, having a somewhat unusual flavor profile. The fruity, grassy, herbal and spicy elements are well-balanced, making for a rather interesting brew with a unique flavor profile.

Thanks @jonphisher for the support, was a close one!

Poured at 50° into my trusty Big Eddy snifter! Thick and black, it even has a few bubbles that appear a light brown, they're gone in a flash! Boogar factory gets some dark chocolate, some burnt sugar, oak some vanilla and toffee, taste buds get all that, plus a bit of whiskey. This is a nicely "chewable" beer. Tasty for sure!
