I was just trying to look for some of the first Bigfoot black and white label(s) online, where it says: American Strong Ale, not Barleywine. But I couldn't find any. IMO, it's definitely more similar to Arrogant Bastard, than any Barleywine.

Here's one from the "barleywine" years. It was labeled "strong ale" in '83, but they couldn't sell it out of state as a "strong ale" so they used "barleywine" (one word) in very small font in '84. (as far as I know)

Here it is from a different source. It's not what you're looking for though.

    Yep! That's the one!

Was that label ever used though?

Only in California, and only for Bigfoot's first release... possibly. I don't really know.

The label image is from a scan of a May 1983 article on SN from The Brewers Digest magazine. The article notes that their beers were available in California and "...have recently been introduced in Oregon and Washington."

The only mention of Bigfoot was in a paragraph about special beers for local events, etc.: "In addition, they produced Bigfoot Strong Ale and Old Chico Brewery Beer for the Christmas season."

    :slight_frown:
Awkwardly worded - were both "for the Christmas season"?

No mention of Celebration Ale other than a poor B&W pic of the '82 label.

The story of Maytag creating the one-word "Barleywine" to get the early Old Foghorn labels approved by the state (but not the ATF?) is well-known - not sure of the chronology of where Bigfoot fits in.

Well @zid @WCKDVBZ @FBarber I thought I'd open this so I could better participate in the debate. I'm glad I did. I can now state unequivocally that this is indeed a barley wine.

This is really nice, I get sweet notes of cherry, apple, caramel, and sugar cookies up front. The finish dries out a good deal as the cherries turn tart and some dry, leafy bitterness joins in to close things out. I'm going back for more, $6 for 500ml is a darn good deal.

Tree Of Life is one of my all time favorite barleywines i have had. I like it more than the 4 stouts I've tried from TH 3 times over .

You all know head quality is an entire subspecialty skill. It’s not my fault that I recognize talent and effort to get a remarkable cap to an amazeballs beverage. LOL!

Anyone have one of those "Trip in the Woods" bottles in their cellar? I have one that I bought a couple years ago. I think it's from 2019 and it's a combination of 1, 2 and 3 year old Bigfoot aged in bourbon barrels. Knew I wanted to age it a little, but I've been getting an itch to open it during the holidays this year. Not sure if I should give it more time, though

What did you think of it? Have you ever had the standard barrel aged bigfoot? If so, how did it compare?

You don't want my opinion on Bigfoot.
