A combo of things- good value, availability, and commitment to continuous improvement. Beercruncher would have to speak to the specifics of the latter. They seem to have gained a reputation of being experts at barrel aging.

edit: this is over the past 5 years, no idea why it would be so much better from 21-22 other than the hype train adding more cars.

For me specifically (trust me, I’m way out of the hype game loop), this batch seems fuller bodied with more cocoa, vanilla and coffee notes coming through. I mean, you get that with previous vintages, but it seems to come through more in this batch (to my palate least). Normally Cafe is my favorite annually, but regular may take the cake this year.

I don't think this is the case, honestly. Deth's Tar gets better year over year since 2018 or so; if you check previous year's threads you'll see the same "it's better this year" crescendo.

I was in the minority 2 years back where I thought the opposite, I don't think a single poster here agreed with me.

Basically Revolution is just NAILING their Deth's Tar formula, and us fiends have been acknowledging for years now.

And this is really it. I can't say for sure, but it seems where Big Beer is value brewing and trying to cut every corner to make their recipes more profitable while retaining what little flavor of the original beers character they can, Rev is just focused on making the beer better every year.

Apparently I'm in the minority here. I was at the Brewpub yesterday afternoon and the base Deth's Tar was watery, thin, and sweet to me. Is that the normal expectation? I asked the bartender if that was normal - she had a sample and said it was perfectly normal.

In contrast, the Cafe Deth had a great mouthfeel (not watery/thin) and the coffee flavor was popping. Even the Deth by Currants was far superior and not watered down. I'm hard pressed to think of a time the base stout was so very different from the variants.

Seems you had a bad pour or have expectations for thick ba stouts. I always prefer barrel forward, medium mouthfeel stouts over adjuncts and sweetness and Deth has always provided a barrel forward, calmed sweetness taste. They have been consistent at that.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it was watery with zero mouthfeel. And the bartender confirmed that was normal. And this was in sharp contrast to the Cafe and Currant pours which were far superior.

My perception is that Deths Tar and Cafe Deth have pretty much the same mouthfeel, which I would describe as medium for a BA stout. Cafe deth is the same beer as DT with the “dry beaning” process to add the coffee as Rev has described in past years. My experience with the fruited Deth variants is that end up a little thinner than Deths Tar , I’m guessing because of the fruit addition. But I can’t think of a single deep woods offering I’ve had that could be described as thin or watery.

This is pretty much spot on in my experience. I’ve had an embarrassing amount of deep woods in bottles, cans, and on draft over the years but never felt any were “watery”

Basically what @Raj , @BeerPrince22 , and @Jsimansk said. DT is not a thicc boi beer, but it's definitely not watery. Did you have Cafe and or Currants first?

I had the Deths Tar first, folowed by Currants, then Cafe. Deths Tar wasn't even in the same ballpark as Cafe, and even Currants had a better mouthfeel. I'm beginning to think it was a bad keg.

I'd love to pitch in here as well. This year's variant seems to be in alignment with most other modern BA stouts - thicker and sweeter. It's a trend that's happening nationwide and I've noticed the same with BCS since 2021, I believe. Their FG (residual sugar) went up from 1.039ish to 1.045, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for Deth, but I'm too busy drinking it to decarb a sample and measure it!

I'll also say that the barrel stock that Rev get is different from year to year, so there's also a difference there.

Not going to lie I wasn’t a fan of this years. I know I’m in the minority here and maybe on my own island. I mean it’s still better than many BA brews out there but this one and Cafe were a bit too syrupy to me compared to prior years. I did like Currants a lot though.

I have always found Deth Tar to be really good, but over the last two or three years Deth Tar has progressively been getting significantly better and seems to wow me progressively more each year! My theory is that Revolution has a higher percentage of more mature barrels that are going into the "master blend" of yearly release of Deth Tar resulting in a better barrel aged oatmeal stout?
Again all theory here, but perhaps some of the Revolution peoples can tell us exactly why...

I am guessing one reason for the oatmeal in this oatmeal stout is to make a creamy silky texture. Barrel aging also causes this with certain beers. Deth Tar has an incredible texture! Where did you get your draft pour at?
