Well, I was pretty darn close. Barnacles from Reuben's Brews & Hair of the Dog! English-style barleywine ale at 11.75% ABV. Almost dead on for the ABV, and correct that this wasn't barrel aged. This comes across as an American barleywine much more than an English barleywine, but that's up to the brewer! I'm super honored to try this!! Thanks so much, @kemoarps !! This was so much fun!

    Glad you enjoyed. Cheers!

FYI. That one needs a new entry. There is a non-BA version of Sweet Release as well as a Bourbon BA one too.

    Good evening NBW
Another great beer from Wooly Pig courtesy of @beergoot
    [IMG]
500mL undated bottle poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 4.4% ABV 28 IBU 11.7°P per the very informative label. The beer pours dark brown with little light penetration and light brown head. The head recedes to an uneven cap and leaves a web of lacing. The aroma is mild, slightly sweet, slightly roasty, slightly smokey with bakers chocolate as the biggest single note. The taste is a kiss of bittersweet roasted malt with toasted malt and a little tang following quickly behind. Chocolate, coffee, caramel, bread and smoke all show up. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Cleanly lagered. Overall, excellent. Artfully crafted with a ton of complexity at only 4.4%.

Wooly Pig Farm Brewery is now on my official list of places to visit once the bulk of my vacation time is no longer being used moving two kids in and out of dorms and college apartments...

    Cheers all!

...it's a unique little place...the setting obviously different from most breweries, yet it's their beers that make a visit all worth it...

[posted to the wrong thread earlier. I may have been drinking...]
So I realized today that I forgot to thank all of y'all in BA that are veterans on Friday, so let me start off by thanking you all for your service.

As it happens, this veterans day fell shortly before the 80th anniversary of the naval battles of Guadalcanal, November 12-14, 1942. For a number of years now, at this time of year, I get out my copy of the late James Hornfischer's book Neptune's Inferno and re-read his account of those battles. For the lay reader such as most of us are, this is probably the best account you can find.

Anyway, this thread is about new beers, and so I've managed to convince my liver to stop complaining about what I put it through yesterday long enough to hit this hazy pale ale, courtesy of @Roguer.

Really nice Mosaic and Motueka hopped pale, with an almost creamy mouth feel. Enjoying the hell out of drinking it after a day spent mostly cleaning out a storage area and packing up old clothes to be donated to thrift stores.

I was planning on having another couple today, but I think this will be it.

    Monkish Liquid Flows DDH DIPA.

Pours a turbid, dull yellow with a nice pillowy head that sticks around a while. Light lacing.

Big aromas as the can is cracked. Citrus, tropical fruit, slight dankness.

Taste follows. Broad array of citrus, citrus rind, tropical fruit on the tongue. Juicy, as they say.

    Full bodied. Enjoyable.

My experience with Monkish has been limited, but every hazy IPA I’ve had from them has been very good. This is no exception. If you like the style, this is definitely top tier.

    Cheers!

Wondering if this would have been better when fresh, it was 3 years old when I got it.
The pour was very enthusiastic but didn’t stay around long at all.
The aroma was malty and more coffee than chocolate, but good.
The taste, I had high hopes for this combination and maybe were it fresh or a different vintage, it would have met those expectations. As it is the flavors were somewhat muddled, I thought maybe there was still some live yeast in there (which would account for the lava like flow of foam right after opening)
The feel was good, very good, but I couldn’t get past the taste. Was it supposed to be like this?
OA, interesting but not sure if I want to try it again.

Next up is another beer from @kemoarps as part of BIF 16. Television People, a Kölsch Weisse-style ale with coriander and lemon. From Bizarre Brewing in Seattle.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a semi-transparent yellow with a good amount of fluffy white head. The nose is full of grass, wheat, honey, lemon meringue pie, and a slight floral note.

The taste is super smooth. A subtle sweetness hits immediately, followed by an earthy (almost dank) layer. The sweetness is a citrus sweetness - mostly orange and a hint of banana. After that, it's wheat, grass, wet leather, damp wood after rain, what I think is coriander, pepper, and a bit of vanilla. Really interesting!

The mouthfeel is quite dry and pretty light. An earthy taste persists on the aftertaste. Overall, a really nice beer! Thanks, Kestrel!

Another BIF 16 beer. Bare Hands thai.ipa courtesy @ovaltine 7.1% ABV; 4.44 overall

Pours an effervescent gold with one finger of pearl colored head. Okay head retention & lacing

S: Tons of tropical & citrus fruits, coriander & a little coconut

T: Lemongrass, a touch coconut, limes & dryness up front, plus coriander. More lemongrass, coriander & lime as this warms, just a little dryness as well. Finishes dry with lemongrass, coriander & lime ( maybe Kaffir? )

MF: Medium body, fairly lively carbonation, great balance

This begs to be drank along side a Red Curry with Shrimp, super drinkability

Well, I had intended to crack into this Oktoberfest while watching the Seahawks beat up on the Buccaneers over in Munich, Germany (oktoberfest for the Munich game felt appropriate). Well, I forgot that the international game meant that it took place at like 0600. So I suppose I could have watched it while I was getting the baby back to sleep! And besides, the game didn't go well anyway, so maybe I didn't really miss out after all. Still may as well pop into the oktoberfest while I watch the Kraken in a tightly contested match against Winnipeg!!

    Von Trapp - Oktoberfest
Pour is a clear caramel colour that's quite lovely. Big swell of wet foam that necessitates a pause to let it recede before continuing with the pour. Mild lacing.

Nose is lovely with a bright floral/spicy note from the hops bringing levity to contrast a warming base that is led by toasty and bready malts, with a touch of creamy caramel to swirl it all together.

Flavour is much more bitter up front than I'd expected. Spicy/earthy hops, but there's also a little detour into an almost lemon citrus realm that's a little perplexing. Toasty malts that also tend a little sweet with the type of honey that calls to mind sweet breads (not sweetbreads). This teams well with the lightly sweet floral hops to create a nice third act.

Moderately dry. More bitter than I'd expected, but very drinkable and quite enjoyable.
Thanks for sending this my direction, Maynard!!
    @WunderLlama

    (that game ended very furstratingly).

I mostly did this as a mystery beer because when I drank it, I got SO MUCH banana up front and throughout, so I thought it might throw you off. It sounds like your can didn't have much of that, ha! Glad you enjoyed it anyway. Cheers!!

That beer was in their “always available” rotation for YEARS, but they made it part of their “occasional” rotation this year, which is unfortunate because I always had that in my beer fridge. And your last statement is spot on - it is fantastic with spicy food. Glad you enjoyed it, Russ.

    Thanks!

But unfortunately that beer has disappeared around here. I just see a handful of Yards core beers these days. Thankfully the Washington's Porter is drinking better than ever, and it's still in my own rotation. :beers:
