Nice! I shared a bottle of this about a month ago and everyone loved it. Great beer!

@Beersnake1 You may be confused about what is meant here in terms of 2nd vs 3rd use barrels. OG BCBBW (ie King Henry, 2013 and 2014) were all a BW that was aged in bourbon barrels that previously held BCBS the year before. So it was bourbon —> BCBS —> BCBBW. As. Result, the OH BCBBW have a lot of stout character and a more burgundy colour that the 2016/2017 do not have. However, they also have less bourbon due to being third use. Personally, I agree that I think there is more complexity due to the stout barrels than the bourbon barrels, but still yum yum in my tum tum.

What @Beer_Economicus said. If you’ve had much Jackie Os they do cuvée blends with BA BW and BA stout blends (other breweries do them too but JO is probably my fav version I’ve tried). This is different because there is actual stout blended in, but very good. Also, that Endolith and BA barleywine series JO did was fantastic. I recently had a chance to drink Blue Ridge which is a 3rd use of barrel BW with the 2nd use having held Maman. It was absolutely amazing!!! The BW I keep missing out on that I want to try is Phase 3 Arabesque. I’ll try it one of these days… VSOJ is one of, if not my favorite BA barleywine (but don’t sleep on reg Straight Jacket). I’m super stoked for DB VSOJ!

It's been freezing cold and snowing since Tuesday, so it was high time I grabbed a nice barleywine and joined in this thread again.

    Jackie O's Endolith

Pours a dark brown color, opaque and slick. Thin, off-white head forms on the beer, lingers for a moment before dissipating. Thin residual ring of foam remains on the top of the beer. Aroma has notes of rich bready and nutty malts, brown sugar, sticky buns, pecans, bourbon, wet oak, a touch of mustiness and some caramel. Really rich and delicious on the nose.

Taste follows the nose with notes of caramel, toffee, maple candy, sticky bun, and some dried dark fruits. All that gives way to a rich malty backbone with nutty and bready character. The bourbon and oak come through on the back end bringing with them a noticeable heat on the palate. There is a moderate spiciness that comes through on the back end that cuts through the overall sweetness and adds a nice counterbalance to it. Feel is medium bodied, smooth, but with a certain syrupy stickiness to it. Moderate carbonation. Smooth, but warming finish.

Overall it's a lovely, rich BA barleywine. Hits all the notes I love and want from a barrel aged English Barleywine.

Ahhh - now it's coming back to me. I keep mixing up what they did compared to the wording in the Scotch world. I now remember how they did it back then with the 3rd use. Thanks!

Going with a big old English barleywine tonight. Thr3e from the Bruery. Bourbon barrel-aged and 16.1% ABV. This one might take a couple of days to consume.

Big 750ml bottle, opened at fridge temp but allowed to warm over a while. Pours very dark brown - borderline black. Thin layer of light brown head. The nose immediately indicates that this is from the Bruery. Loud screams of toffee, thick bourbon, chocolate, molasses, huge dark malts, brown sugar, and lots of dark fruit. Figs, plums, raisins, blackberries. Very nice!

The taste is fantastic. Definitely sweet, but it seems to mellow a bit with each subsequent sip. Loads of toffee, bourbon, dark chocolate, figs, plums, brown sugar, vanilla, maple, and sweet candy. A nutty note emerges - along the lines of walnuts and maybe pecans.

Mouthfeel is medium to thick bodied. The aftertaste is definitely on the sweet side. Overall, a great beer. If you drink this, let it warm up a bit! Recommended!

I should note that this is not a straight barleywine. Here's the description:

Thr3e’s the magic number, or so we’ve heard. Inspired by Mélange beers of years past, we worked with our friends at Three Chiefs Brewing to create a delectable blended ale. We blended Black Tuesday and our Anniversary ale into our barleywine-style ale base, then let it age in a variety of choice bourbon barrels for an average of 16 months.

So, it contains both the Anniversary Ale and Black Tuesday.

    G.I. Bourbon County English (?) Wheatwine, 2018.

Is this the same recipe as the recent small batch wheatwines I loved so much from @FBarber ? They seem pretty similar to me. I get a lot of honey flavored candy and honey roasted nuts plus toffee, a wealth of booze, and hints of raisin and chocolate. This is hugely flavorful, so brashly fantastic, almost as good as the small batches. Just loving this.

Label says barleywine, brewer knows best right?

Yeah, I think I would stick with barleywine on this one. I think the other components are relatively minor compared to the barleywine base.

    I hope you're kidding.

Allagash calls their Black as a Stout, but it's not. That's just one example of brewers not knowing best. Also, a bunch of trendy breweries label their 10% ABV hazies as Triple IPAs, instead of what they actually are...Imperial/Double IPAs. Several American Pale Wheat Ales labeled as Hefeweizen. Did you know that Alaskan Brewing Amber is actually an Altbier?

It's also pitch black, and it looks like a Stout. Besides, why would you call/consider something a Barlewine, when there's Imperial Stout mixed in with it?

Couldn't wait too long to open this guy, just too excited and curious.

Is this the same recipe as the BCBBW from the past, anyone know? And I read that 60% was double barrel aged?

At 17% this is of course, massive but it's all too drinkable given its strength. The barrel presence is intense, mature whiskey, strong leather and oak, plus mellow vanilla. Some sweet elements from the base barleywine manage peek through, caramel primarily but there is a hint of fruit and a traces of chocolate as well. When cold, there is a moderately off-putting floral heat but that disappears closer to cellar temp. Great, great stuff here. Not quite VSOJ caliber, but damn close. Worth seeking out.

Looks great! I want one so bad. Cant justify $100 though when the 2016 and 2017 are still so good @ 20$ - $25. I'm gonna keep hunting though

Great Barleywine from Pipeworks. 2013, no carbonation...classic stone fruit, a little cinnamon and a bunch of vanilla. i'm really enjoying this one.

I bought this on a lark when I went to the United Center and stopped by the Goose Island Fulton location. Two of my favorite local breweries, and this one is indeed indicative of how good they are.

Weyerbacher Cinnsanity, barrel aged with cinnamon.

2017 keg sampled, with trepidation, in 2022. The first pastry barleywine?

Kind of all over the map. Sometimes the cinnamon is a mild accent in an oaky, aged barleywine, at other times I'm tasting those atomic fireball candies, every now and then a wonderfully sweet cinnamon roll note comes through. Overall this kinda works, glad I came across it.
