Hahaha ... I'm getting crankier so those are becoming the ONLY options (unless they want a gimlet).

So, why can they brew 'top notch' new beers with that changed profile?

You do see the dichotomy of "a lot of their newer IPAs are damn good" vs. "ruined their core IPAs" don't you?

    Cheers!

Sure. It’s been years, but I believe the beers may have sold better with the new fermentation profile. So they stuck with that. Maybe what they did appealed to a larger audience, and not us beer geeks?

To me, it made the core beers less juicy and riddled with hop burn.

Perhaps with newer IPAs they don’t use the new fermentation profile, or tweak some other aspect. And then if that sells well they’ll use that recipe. Their way of experimenting?

Well, that would be a very weird situation. Why a brewery would conduct a 'new' fermentation profile for their heritage brands and then resurrect their 'old' fermentation profile for new brands is very vexing to me.

    Cheers!

I think we can relate to any industry, including brewing, that three years were spent, along with many millions of dollars, to empower the best minds of the best company to design the Edsel.

There is little that brewing great beer and running a successful business have in common. They require strengths in nearly opposite areas of the creative brain

I can’t disagree with that. I can only say that if he who brews good beer wishes to run a successful business be must adopt the proper traits of a business man to do so, or entrust others to run his business for him.

I’ve started to move in the same direction. The last two releases from the two best flavoured stout makers in my part of the world came and went and I didn’t bother to pick up my phone and make an order, other than to get a non-flavoured double barrel Barleywine. In the past, I’d buy at least one of each of the coconut, cocoa, vanilla, maple, anchovy stouts. Then, I’d let them sit in the cellar indefinitely waiting on a time when I could convince myself to open them.

It’s not that I don’t like them. I do. It’s that I have come to realize I like them once or twice a year.

Like you, I’m saving a fortune.

Yeah, I kind of more agree with this. Among my friends anyway, if you're going over to a friend's place and are expecting to drink beer, you typically bring a few beers with you and don't just expect to drink the host's beer the entire time (and if you do, you leave the beers you brought in exchange). So if I'm going over to a friend's place that typically doesn't have a beer I want, I just bring a beer that I know I like with me so I'm guaranteed to have something available that I can enjoy.

Of course that being said I'll always try to cater what I have available to the preferences of the guests I'm having over, so I would probably opt for a locally-brewed lager if I wanted to have an option to appeal to a group that typically enjoys AALs. But if they complain that it's Live Oak's Pre-War Pils instead of Modelo Especial, then I'll be happy to tell them to bring their own damn beer next time.

(If my wife was involved she would probably end up forcing me to buy the Modelo anyway since she is a much better host than I care to be. :stuck_out_tongue:)

I try to stay away from porters and stouts that are under 6-7% abv. I feel that dark beers need the have a high alcohol contact to match with the strong flavor. That’s why I love barrel aged stouts I guess

Spring is the worst time for analogy, but summer can be bad too.

What about dry Irish stouts or dark lagers? English dark milds on cask?

I mean if we’re going according to the government guidelines then I definitely drink too much. It might not be every day but the volume per sitting is well above their recommendations.

    Agreed.

    Except the erection thing.

But I love the size format of bombers. Often is the perfect size beer for me especially if I’m only drinking one and it’s a high gravity and/or more difficult to obtain beer.
