How much of beer is just hype created by influencers and Untappd? Ok, cool, Alex Kidd rated Goose's 2-year Barleywine as one of his favorites, but his palate isn't mine or even yours. He also gets this stuff for free, but people view it as some sort of an international benchmark.
All of my friends are now heavily ISO of Goose's 2-year Barleywine, but I just can't justify spending $48-50 on one bottle when I can buy 2x packs of SJ for the same money... Heck, or I might find another Cafe Deth and get one more SJ for a few $$ more.

That's my rant for the day, but it gives me an idea. I might have to invite some people over and do a blind tasting of SJ, VSOJ, Ryeway, VSOR and 2-year Barleywine.

PS. I personally really dug Lux Eighteener. It's a nice contrast to something like SJ or Ryeway since those are drier.

I've found the only effective way to use beer reviewers is to find reviewers that have similar taste to you (i.e. you both rave and/or are let down by the same beers). Even then you still have to somewhat take it with a grain of salt.

I get the FOMO though, I love the old school BCBBW and after the very positive reviews for 2 year started pouring in, I was very eager to try it and may have sprung for a bottle had I come across one. Actually having tried it though? Not a chance.

I don't disagree with your sentiment here. I personally could give 2 shits about influencers. I think they're one component of the sad commentary that has become the modern human race. That said, DDB isn't the only one raving about 2 Year BW. Lots of people already were prior to his post. As someone who has had it, and someone who really enjoys BBA barleywines, I thought it was great. However, I may have had a trash palate already by that point in the day so YMMV. If people are taking their cues from influencers and Untappd, well, this is America and you do you. Let that be your friends' problem.

Blind tastings. All day. They'll help you calibrate your own tastes, so you further appreciate what appeals to your own palate. Plus you can spend your hard earned $$$ on what you love with no qualms.

Side note. Cellarmaker is releasing a Triple Barrel Barleywine today. Very exciting. Then, last night they released the details. $30 per bottle. An 8oz bottle.

My brain without even being prompted....."$30!! That's a 4pk of Ryeway!"

    8oz vs 48oz. No contest

    I Fn LOVE Ryeway.

I had the GI barleywine at FoBAB. I liked it though it was pretty sweet and I doubt I would want a lot of it. In a tasting though it might be pretty impressive since you're not getting a huge sample. I guess what I'm saying is it might win a tasting based largely on first impressions, but if I were going to sit down and have a glass I'd choose the SJ and maybe the Ryeway.

Thank you for that. I need to keep saying to myself: "SJ and RW is just fine, don't chase others."

Head to head Cafe Deth > ‘22 BCBCS,then factor in price of a 4PK to just 1 bottle of GI.

Saw a few bottles of Bourbon County 2-Year Barleywine shelfing it up today, chuckled when I saw the price was roughly the same as six cans of Straight Jacket, and walked on.

I've totally flipped over the last few years in favor of Rev. The idea of even comparing anything from Bourbon County to Revolution Deep Wood series has become a joke, especially when considering price point. I'd take the 'worst' Deep Wood beer from last couple of years over the 'best' BC beer over that same time period, and not even blink. The last solid beer from Bourbon County that was worth anything was DBBCBS of.... what, 2019? The last beer from Rev Deep Wood that I'd put back would be Honey Jacket. Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

Folks can keep their 'BLANDons' variant, and I'll take regular Deth's Tar 10 out of 10 times over it. /rant.

I mostly agree with all of the above, but hate the Honey Jacket slander. :sunglasses:

Variant Crowlers are up on the Webstore. Well I misspoke they are available to purchase for Season ticket holders through the email we just got.

Feels like a missed opportunity they aren't bottling these in baby bottles.

Doug explained awhile back that the loss involved in assembling a smaller crowler is prohibitive. I'm very sure this is the only reason we're not seeing baby bottles.

I wonder if they would consider using the 8oz twist top crowlers instead of the 32oz ones, The Answer and 8th have went to those and maybe few others I cant think of. A better serving size for sure.
