@zid Good conversation. Thanks for putting this out there.

Agreed: This is fair to say. Disagree: That the style is actually changing. My point being academic more than practical. +1 for both BA and non-BA are worthy of coexistence.

Good points as they illustrate how finely we can subcategorize the classifications. IMO this level belongs to a very limited sliver of enthusiasts who can both distinguish and appreciate these attributes.

AND, those who can distinguish the differences between barrel condition… Well they are in a special league altogether. No doubt they do exist. Actually, as I’m typing it strikes me that the barrel condition may be more significant than originally considered.

I wish there was some way to test this, but I've also long suspected the quality and condition of the barrel itself matters more than the liquid that was once inside it. I would guess the less time the barrel spends empty the better?

Enjoying an American Barleywine from an NC collab between Casita and Divine Barrel. Interesting mix of flavors with traditional barleywine dark fruit combined with orange and a touch of grapefruit from all the C-Hops used. Finishes with a touch of piney bitterness. Definitely unique with the tang from the dark fruits and the hoppy fruit flavors and piney bitterness. Very enjoyable overall - 4.18.

Going with a mystery can that @DIM so generously sent in a recent trade. I will post my review here and then post a reveal. Poured at just over fridge temp. Pours very dark brown with little head. The nose immediately screams barrel aged to me. Not just bourbon though - I'm thinking brandy. Sweet dark fruit - vinous. Could be cognac, brandy, sherry. Red wine seems to mingle as well. It took a minute, but a rich toffee makes an appearance. A hint of vanilla, and some brown sugar. Let's move on to the taste.

The taste screams wine barrel to me. Sweet red grapes, some Armagnac, toffee, a hint of cherries, maybe even raspberries. The fruit on this is really extreme, both on the nose and on the taste. Lovely. Doesn't end up too sweet at all. I wonder if it was even brewed with fruit. As for ABV, I am thinking it's very high. Maybe 11% (which is still high!). Very curious what this is. My guess is a red wine barrel-aged English barleywine.

How did I do? Underwater Church from Wallenpaupack Brewing. A blended barrel-aged barlewine combining separate beers aged in bourbon, rum, and Moscatel barrels for over two years! ABV is 12%

Well, I was close on the sherry barrels! To me, they dominated this beer. I did not get much bourbon and I didn't think rum at all. However, I love sherry and I'm very happy with this one! I also love this brewery! I got a bunch of beers from them in a previous BIF and even have a shirt from them! Thanks so much, Dan!! This is a fantastic beer!

I'm surprised you've even heard of the brewery let alone have a shirt! I didn't know they existed until I was up that way for the weekend recently. I agree, the sweet wine dominated here. Glad you liked it, cheers Tim!

    Hey Dan,
Maybe from the hills of Western NC?
After reviewing it i checked out your review and found it interesting that we both had similar experiences with this as sour or tangy which obviously is not a common b-wine trait. But yet all those C-Hops made it a somewhat similar finish of a bigger version of Bigfoot.
    Cheers!

Having another from @Beersnake1 tonight! This is from the Netherlands and the can says American Barley Wine. Canned a little over a year and a half ago. Thanks for the chance to try this!

Briefly up front this is a classic American barleywine. I get lots of caramel and leafy hops, this quickly turns sweet though. Lovely fruit notes of apples and pears dusted with a little cinnamon plus simple syrup, sugar cookies, and toffee. This is a really nice cross between English and American to me. Overall I am thoroughly enjoying this!

I noticed how similar our reviews are @Beersnake1 you say hybrid and I say cross. Great minds...

Another great barleywine from @DIM - Pillar of Beasts from 3 Floyds. From the bottle: Salted caramel barleywine aged 12 months in bourbon barrels with vanilla beans, and cocoa nibs. BA says 13.7% ABV, but I couldn't find anything on the bottle about that. I must be blind.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very murky orange/brown. Looks like salted caramel, literally! The nose is scrumptious. Waves of salted caramel slap the palate immediately. Salted caramel might be my favorite candy of all time, so I am loving this. Vanilla, a slight nutty note, and a really nice bourbon note. Absolutely loving this.

The taste is equally fantastic. Absolutely dominated by salted caramel. Just lovely. Vanilla, cinnamon, bourbon, oak, molasses, figs, raisins, a slight hoppy note, and a bit of an earthy note. I can't say enough about this one.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is not detectable at all.

    4.65/5 rDev +10.2%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

    Thanks so much, Dan!

Here's a great English Barleywine from Proper brewing ...Probably the best BW in the state and aged in Pinot Noir Barrels...The wine Barrels knock down the typical sweetness but I really like the strong red wine flavor...which is strange cause I never drink, or really like wine...it works well
