I enjoyed the first batch. I’ll definitely check this out.

Since this beer was brewed using some adjunct (corn) and fermented with a lager yeast it seems to be a Cold IPA. Have you seen any mention from Notch as regards "Cold IPA"?

Nevermind, I just googled to learn that Kühl = Cold. :flushed:

    Cheers!

Brienne (now SP) has previously voiced Lonesome Road, as a Cold IPA, given the use of Kölsch yeast at the time

Chris goes into a little bit more depth here: The decocted Hochkurz mash version, in honor of the German ‘Beer Pope’ - Prof. Ludwig Narziss

A couple of topics from post #904 above which are worthy of further discussion:

“…limiting the attenuation (a must with Czech Lager)”. It is indeed true that Pilsner Urquell is Czech Pale Lager that has a high(er) final gravity which results in a low(er) ABV: 4.4% ABV. There are plenty of other 12° Czech Pale Lagers which are brewed using Double Decoction which are more highly attenuated.

One example is Budweiser Budvar (branded as Czechvar when exported to the US). This beer has an ABV of 5%. I had several draft mugs of this beer at the U Medvídků pub in Prague and those beers had a crispness to them consistent with the beer being well attenuated. Below is a photo on one of these beers:

Another example(s) is the Czech Pale Lagers brewed by Únětický Pivovar. Both the 10° and 12° Czech Pale Lagers are well attenuated and the crisp quality of those beers reminded me of a German Pilsner. Below is a photo of a mug I enjoyed at the beer garden of Únětický Pivovar:

There are a number of other Czech Pale Lagers I could list which are also highly attenuated. Limiting attenuation is not a “must” here.

“…melanoidin creation”. A chemical reaction that occurs during the boiling of the grains as part of the decoction mashing process is the Maillard Reaction. A number of Maillard Reaction products are created and melanoidins are one type of those products but there are others as well.

    Na Zdravi

    Wow.

I'll take my brewing experience at Únětický, and certificate in brewing from the Prague Institute of Chemistry and Technology in Brewing where my professor was ex Pilsner Urquell, and agree your two week trip to the Czech Republic grants you more expertise than me.

You are an example of why most brewers avoid this forum. I'm here in the spirit of sharing in info, and I'm no longer interested in doing that.

    Well done sir.

Chris, we are all permitted to share our thoughts on this forum.

And being civil in discourse is a plus.

    Cheers!

To engage in discourse, you gotta be able to listen and understand what people are saying instead of talking over people all the time.

My brother was at the Salem location and said there would be a Kölsch Day, from 3-9 on 12/27.

I haven't been up to Notch in a minute. Guess a weekend day-trip should be in order

That sucks. Chris was kind enough to be an amazing resource and now some ass that's probably never even been to the taproom ruins it.

This is what happens when you let the mid-Atlantic into the New England forum.
