2022 Bourbon County Barleywine 2 year Reserve. Compliments of the amazing @DIM !!!

Poured at fridge temp, but this review is over at least 30 min so I was able to taste it after it warmed a bit. Pours dark brown with very little head. The nose is killer toffee, big bourbon booze, some vanilla, and brown sugar. This definitely smells like the ABV is high! The layers of dark fruit emerge more after several minutes. Plums and raisins. Very nice on the nose!

The taste is intense!! Wow. I definitely see the relation to earlier Bourbon County barleywines. Nice sweet toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, bourbon, dates, prunes, a hint of tobacco, and even a hint of charred wood. As I said, this one is super intense and the ABV is not shy. So dang good. If you like bourbon, this is a fantastic beer for you!

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and there is a slight alcohol burn on the way down. The aftertaste is predominantly sweet toffee. Overall, a really fantastic barleywine that is definitely worth seeking out. Thanks again, Dan!

Cheers to @ovaltine for this Hop Butcher for the World Corn Cob Towers DIPA, 8% ABV; 3.98 overall

Pours a very hazed gold/orange with a thumb of cream colored head. Nice lacing & above average head retention

S: Plenty of citrus, some tropical fruit, fades a bit as this warms

T: Sweet oranges, limes, powdery dryness up front. More dryness, bitter orange & lime, some green melon & grapefruit as this beer warms, just a little pineapple sweetness as well. Finishes dry with grapefruit, lime & bitter orange

MF: Medium body, creamy carbonation, good balance

Drinks easy enough, but I do prefer these a bit sweeter

Christmas cantata sung twice today, so a brief break from musical responsibilities.

    Oh...look...another holiday beer...

Anchor doesn't make too many appearances around here these days, and I have had a prior iteration years ago. How muchbit changes year to year, I'm not sure.

It pours kinda root beer color, pretty clear. With a fluffy light tan head. The foam hangs for quite a while and is still sitting at a solid 1/8 inch cap at the half glass mark.

Malty on the smell. Gingerbread, caramel sweet, and resinous pine in the background, but not terribly shy.

Definitely sweet on the taste. The flavors are more assertive than the aroma suggested. Rich malt, gingerbread, caramel, maybe a bit fruity, some molasses in the aftertaste. Then there's this resinous component - almost old school IPA-like - that keeps the bigger flavors in check and tames the sweetness. This is quite pleasant.

The feel is creamy and very smooth. Deceptively gulpable at the ABV.

This is a nice winter warmer. The flavors are nicely rounded, well integrated, and what I presume are the hops brings a nice twist. Easy 4.0 - 4.25 for me. Glad I grabbed a six.

I've been doing the woods decorating since the lad could walk in the woods, so three years now. He is six, knows our six acres as well as I do. Oh and he found where the deer bunked during the recent rain storm, too. I cherish every walk and exploration - I know it won't last forever! If he's still walking with PaPa when he's a teen and I'm 75, I'll be a happy man.

The beer was a minor surprise - sometimes I have good luck with Proclamation, sometimes not so much. But when they are good, usually they are very good.

This is the 2019 release, consumed on 12-18-2022

Pitch black pour. The head is dark brown. It looked almost nitro like when pouring from the can. 3 finger head. The retention is crazy long for a 12.5% beer. Almost no lacing on the glass.
Strong barrel notes in this beer. I get notes of oak, chocolate, caramel, toffee and vanilla in the aroma.
This beer starts out slightly bitter, probably from the rye barrels used. This beer hen it mellows and smooths out fast. The chocolate comes on strong and lingers. I get lots of coffee flavors, along with caramel, toffee, and vanilla. Lots of barrel in this beer.
The body is thick, full and smooth. This beer does also let you know right off that it's a big boy with a bit of an alcohol burn, this doesn't linger.
This is a very well made BA RIS, and I'm so happy I bought it.

    Be back next weekend!!!

Evening all! I think I am finally thawed out after the Eagles game. Everyone is in bed for the night and its time to catch some SNF and have a beer. First up is Anchor Brewing Our Special Ale 2022.

Pours a dark ruddy brown color. Shows excellent clarity when held to the light. Thick, frothy tan colored head forms on the beer, shows lovely retention, then slowly dissipates but never fully. Aroma has notes of malt, orange marmalade, caramel, light allspice and clove with a subtle, but still present, hop aroma.

Taste follows the nose with notes of malts, caramel malt, some light orange, honeysuckle and aromatic floral notes all giving way quickly to a surprisingly hoppy bitterness. On the nose there was not a ton of hop presence, but here in the flavor it comes through much more strongly. There are some spiced notes in there as well - peppery along with notes of clove and allspice. Feel is light to medium bodied and smooth. Medium carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Overall its a solid beer, enjoyable, appropriate for the season.

Founders Sweet Repute Wheat Wine, 12.6% ABV; 4.19 overall

Pours an effervescent amber with slight hazing & a sliver of eggshell colored head. Average-ish head retention & lacing

S: Bourbon, dark fruit, maple syrup

T; Follows the nose, dryness, treacle sweetness, maple candy & a trace of vanilla & a little bit of leafy hops up front. More Maple sweetness, boozeyness & leafy hops, plus barrel dryness as this beer warms up. Finishes with woody bitterness, Maple sweetness. a touch of Bourbon & dryness

MF: Fairly chewy body, low carbonation, very warming

    This is a sipper & a bruiser

Last one for this evening - Harvey's Christmas Ale

Pours a light amber color. Excellent clarity. Thin, weak tan head. Aroma has notes of rich bready malts, candied fruit, dark fruits, christmas plum pudding and some light earthy hoppy notes. Taste is really interesting - so there are the rich malty notes up front. The candied fruit, plum pudding and dark fruits are all there, but there is a distinct hard water (minerally) character to it as well. Some spiced notes come through as the beer warms along with a distinct woody almost tannic quality. Strong earthy, English hop presence is noted on the back end. The strong watery character to the beer conveys across the palate as reminiscent of tea. Feel is kind of sticky, medium to fuller bodied for a beer at this ABV. Very dry finish. Mild carbonation.

Its an admittedly odd flavor profile - unlike anything I have had - but as I drink it its growing on me. I kind of like this for a once a year cold winter evening beer. I will probably revisit if it shows up next year.

Didn’t peruse the whole pile of vinyl but The Rolling Stones album in between the Carpenters and some soundtrack just made me question your dedication to organizing.
    :stuck_out_tongue:
Really enjoyed all the posts this weekend, and I hope to be joining in again next week.
My assorted illnesses have finally been defeated. I pray anyway, what a month it has been.
    Cheers all!

Hope you're ready to rejoin us next week as well!
And, yeah, that was the other thing I realized once I'd posted the picture... the collection is embarrassingly disorganized at the moment. We've tried a couple of different approaches (I favour organizing alphabetically and/or by genre... or maybe even get crazy and do it all chronologically, while my wife is more interested in organizing based on the colour of the spine), but the ultimate death knell is that we're not great at putting them BACK where they were after listening to them.

Sounds like our year; kids have had some sort of something pretty much since October, with a few weeks not mixed in.

I had to take my first true “sick” day in forever a few weeks ago; but worst part was I didn’t have a beer all week that week :cold_sweat:

Keep on keepin’ on; soon it’ll be spring and and it’ll all be in the review mirror I hope…
