MJK is obviously a world class beer, but I’m curious for those that have had it multiple times if your experiences varied. I had it both last year and this year during pickup, and this year it seemed more oxidized with a stronger raisin component to the point that it dominated the flavor profile (compared to my notes for last year).

Anyone else experience differences? Perhaps i was just having a weird palate day.

I’ve only had it once, but I feel like bottle pours from the cellar are going to have a decent amount of variance depending on how long the bottle has been open and the liquid to oxygen ratio inside the bottle. That’s supposed to be part of the fun of that beer being still. See how it changes over the days that it’s open.

Haven’t opened a BBT, Continuance B3, or flim flam yet. D16 would probably be 4 and DBD Stagg would be 5. This was tough though. So many great beers were released this year.

I loved it. It was so different from anything else I’ve had recently

I cannot speak to it personally, but I have a buddy who drank a ton of it at initial release and swears that it’s a ‘shell’ of what it was. I’m sure there are some dramatics to that statement, but he would for sure stand by the fact that it has definitely aged from fresh already.

That’s certainly a dramatization, but a sentiment I agree with. I enjoyed having 4oz the first time, and would have had more of time had allowed (and limits allowed for more than 6), and this time I wish I hadn’t spent the money. It was not really at all like what I remember. The oxidation factor was pretty high, and I’m not someone to normally say that. I’m someone that fancies having a cellar and the ability to drink beers a decade old. This was a big surprise. I wouldn’t have made that declaration without someone else agreeing, but, yea, my experience was certainly very oxidized. Regardless of whether that is a result of how long it had been opened, or a result of time since bottling, I couldn’t tell you. Just my experience.

By comparison, BBT22 was fantastic, and for sure a top 3-5 BA stout ever. The softness (which I assume is from the use of wheated whiskey barrels) is fantastic, and much preferred to the heavy char and smoke from 2021

Dissenting opinion.. I’ve had it in the past and multiple times over the last few weeks and it’s still amazing. Perhaps somewhat different, but it’s been a year since I last had it?

I think any dissatisfaction is purely psychological and more to do with skewed memory or some made up subtle nuance that isn’t actually a thing.

Agree, the beer has not changed much if at all and is still world class. Though I definitely agree with the "how long the bottle has been open at the cellar" take and think that could lead to fun differences between pours. Though when I opened one of my bottles I tried a second pour after it had been open for around 2 days and it was still amazing (though obviously different).

Also Flim Flam is nearly as good, truly a remarkable collab.

For sure it could have been a weird palate day, and I’m certainly not suggesting that my experience is everyone’s. But, I don’t think I’d say it’s purely psychological. My review from last year just doesn’t match my experience this year at all.

Oh man so many great beers this year!

    1) bbt 22 I enjoyed more than rye
    2) pairfait 4 - need more hazelnut beers
    3) ba ambiente rye
3b) terminus rye - I need another to do a side by side with bbt rye

technically parfait and ambiente are shared

wish I could try all the derivations on site. Maybe next year!

    Special Ph1, tete20, scribe b2 and a couple more

In no specific order because you're basically splitting hairs here...

    DBD Stagg Jr
    DB Generational
    BBT Rye

Honorable mentions go to Oude La Ruche (Vintage 2019), Gin BdB w/ Spruce Tips, Gin SdF b1.

It most certainly is. And if I had thought further before posting, I'd say those are my stout and non-stout favs this year, because they were all stellar, but they're very different experiences. Most interesting SP beer of the year for me was The Scribe b2.

Surprise beer for me this year was Satsuma b2. Found it to be super juicy and had a softer profile that seemed unique for SP. I’m guessing it’s due in part to the use of dried fruit vs fresh.

Is that for sale to go already? I don’t really understand their website.

increasingly looks like I’ll be dropping in sometime Friday afternoon. Couple questions:

does the cellar historically do anything fun / big on NYE that I should use by “hall pass” then instead?

should I head to the new shared place because of their on-site list? Or just walk to all three?

thanks! Hope to see some of you!
