Barleywine Appreciation Thread (2022)

2007 Bigfoot. The oldest I’ve have by close to a decade maybe? Twist cap even.

No hiss. Basically flat. Some acidic bite pretends to be carbonation but isn’t. Dig the smell but not much else. Maybe it will grow on me as I assemble the office.

 

Nice nearby milestones! Those should be fun ways to celebrate.
I’ll hope I run into some from my kids’ birth years, they’re all a bit before we had space or taste to hang onto that kind of thing. Only have one this old because the best shop near me occasionally puts out old stuff they hung onto.

This is definitely sitting better as I go.

 

2011 Smuttynose Barleywine. 22 oz bottle, been in my cellar since it was fresh. No abv on the label but these were typically around 11% abv.

Pours dark amber color, clear. cream colored head that quickly fades. Aroma of molasses, toffee, raisin, some fig. Taste is similar, a touch sweet. Faded hops. Enjoyable but a touch of negative oxidation. Most of the carbonation came out in the pour, pretty low carb level which is fine. Coats the tongue. Long finish.

 

Extremely disappointed that they switched over to pint cans for their BA stuff this year.
I even reached out to voice my discontent and they came back with , "remember when it was in bombers?"
At least i can out a bottle stopper in a bomber .

I have had every year of this going back to 2016 and have enjoyed them all .
I had one of these 2022 ones and didnt like it , but i went in already hating the pint can and new art on the label .

Also should note that El Segundo Brewing is one of the breweries where i prefer their BA Barleywine to their Imperial Stout( Standard Crude)

 

Okay, now a relatively fresh barleywine, 2022 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. Actually dated 12/14/21 so just over a year old. Big piney hops, caramel malt. Lingering bitterness. Sticky mouthfeel.

 

woa..this is like drinking a great English barleywine and eating one of those little Carmel cubes you use to get at Halloween...mighty fine

 

Same here. I still have 2 from your stash and will get them posted here in '23.
