Wax Wings - Pulled Into Nazareth IPA

poured from a 16oz can into a spiegelau IPA glass. pours a thick, turbid orange with a big, fluffy white foam head. citrusy orange and peach on the nose. taste offers oranges and peaches as well as some hop bitterness on the finish, which is a tad more watery. medium-full mouthfeel that’s very soft and easy on the palate. i would venture guess it’s citra hops but it could be a combo of citra plus something else. it’s just an onslaught of pithy orange, bitter grapefruit and dank resin / pine. really enjoyable and juicy IPA.

Very nice clear, brown body and carbonation; huge, light tan head, thick and foamy. Pleasant aroma; heavily toasted grain notes; toffee. Tasted started out thin but developed more as the beer warmed; earthy sweetness; toffee and nuts; mild to moderate bitterness. Medium mouthfeel; pleasant residual sugar feel; semi-dry overall.

This is a decent beer although, in my mind, seems a bit thin and weak for the style. The looks and taste are its high-points.

Brewers notes: Our dHop beers are part of our experimental series where we explore new processes and hop combinations. dHop45 has a flaked oats and flaked wheat base, a Citra whirlpool and a Citra, Nelson, and Strata dry hop using an enhanced Energy Treatment for the first time. Our Energy Treatment improves aroma and enhances flavor and body by pulling the most out of from each hop.
dHop pours a hazy bright yellow in color with a hop saturated bright tropical nose. Flavors burst with bright citrus fruit, candied lime, earthy grass, and kumquat in a creamy and luscious mouthfeel and our #EQjuice finish.

Poured into a prententious beer glass , turbid orange haze bomb, some sediment flakes, thin creamy off white foam layer

Aroma is citrus, orange, lime, pineapple

Taste is citrus orange , candied lime

Smooth , hop flavor , no bite, slight sweetness , abv well hidden

    Good beer

T: Sweet malts, grains/corn, a bit pale, light citrus zest, a touch of honey.
F: Moderately crisp med-body w a slight linger and med-fast finish. Not at all dry for the style.

I saved this beer for today. It is quite a special beer. A whiskey barleywine from Norway. 12% ABV. The color is black. There was a slight light brown foam that appeared, but all but a remnant on the edge of this drinking vessel disappeared immediately. The smell is super strong. Whiskey, apricot, caramel, chocolate, and the light scent of a pleasant camp fire. The taste is whiskey, chocolate, caramel, graham cracker, almond, and peat. The taste is more balanced and sweet than I expected after experiencing the powerful smell. This is a wonderful BA barleywine. The mouthfeel is creamy, oily, thick, and full. Light carbonation. Overall, this is a unique beer. Very delicious. I wish I could acquire it routinely.

We're headed to Little House Brewing tonight for a beer pairing dinner catered by the two best restaurants in town. I'm pretty pumped for this. Not only does it sound great but tomorrow I intend on starting a dry January and a major diet in an effort to lose some poundage, so this is my last hurrah for a while.
My night plans prompted me to pull out this Little House Brewing barrel aged brown ale that I purchased mid-summer. It clocks in at 10% and the bottle is marked 123 of 200.

Poured from a 750mm bottle to a diagonally cut tumbler at fridge temperature, but allowed to warm during a long session.
The body is a very dark brown bordering on black, but with brownish red hints at the perimeter of the liquid. A thin dark beige head makes a fleeting appearance and just like that, it's gone.
The smell is of bourbon that pretty much masks all other odors except for a hint of caramel.
The taste leans a lot on the bourbon aspect but maple wood, maple syrup, and caramel all participate. During the time in the mouth this beer is quite sweet, but the tongue dries out quickly after the swallow.
Mouthfeel is sticky as expected and carbonation is light.
I’m not a huge fan of this style but I can imagine this is a good beer for many people.

    F: Very lightly crisp & firm w a med-light body, a bright semi-fast finish w a soft linger. It is lightly drying.

Fine orange-ish amber color; crystal clear; modest carbonation; big, thick head, dense and creamy in texture; nice partial rings and sheets of foam stick to the glass. Very faint aroma; mild pumpkin note. The taste follows along the lines of the smell; dainty pumpkin and harvest spices; mild overall bitterness. Medium body; fairly coarse on the palate; fair residual sugar feel; semi-dry finish.

At only six months of age, I would expect a bolder smell and aroma profile, but it wasn't there with this beer. Decent overall, but not by much.

Happy New Year's Eve, New Beer Weekenders! Our daughter and fiance drove back to North Carolina today but left me several new beers from Deep River Brewing, which they know is one of my preferred brewers in the Old North State. I'm not sure whether there is a message behind this one but my family's roots in North Carolina go back to the 1730's, and my Dad lived on the family farm for awhile as a boy, so I wouldn't consider myself a Carpetbagger if I moved down there in a few years.

In any event I enjoyed this DIPA. It's not a typical "southern" style, i.e., all sweet malt and bitter, piney hops. It pours a hazy, honey-amber color with a very large, frothy, ecru-colored head and thick, clinging lacing. A rather modest nose that balances caramel malt sweetness and tart lemon and grapefruit. Its taste follows the nose but there is also a hint of sweeter fruit including orange. There's almost an English marmalade taste in the background. I'm impressed by the bitterness at the finish. I wish the hop bill were better identified. It has a good, rich, creamy mouth feel with moderate carbonation. This year's batch is 10.5% ABV but it doesn't drink that big. In fact, it went down awfully easily. I'll look for it again and buy some with my Yankee money.

Needed to switch things up and go with something more dry and light for my next beer after a large, high ABV barleywine. I've chosen Coolship Peche from Allagash. In my humble opinion Allagash is one of the most underrated breweries in the country.

Pours a bright, yellowish orange with about an inch of fizzy white head. Excellent clarity. Aroma is funk, peach and barrels. Many people would think this smells disgusting, but for my personal tastes, I think it smells awesome.

Taste is excellent. Similar to the nose, there's plenty of funk accompanying the peach and the barrel, but it all works together in a complex yet balanced fashion. This beer is unique, bright, lively and extremely drinkable. Right in my style wheelhouse. Another excellent example of Allagash's wonderful coolship program.

Anyone have any interesting / fun plans tonight? The Mrs. and I are chilling at home, which feels odd as for 20+ years we've always hosted a New Year's Eve party, but not this year.

Happy New Years Eve - I hope everyone enjoys and loves well. Our tradition forever has been Thai food from one of our favorite joints. The food is in the house, football on the box and as a Badger graduate, I am trying to stay restrained about the early going in the Fiesta Bowl.

    Splitting with the missus:

Why not do a smoothie? This is Mortalis Sphinx - rare showing in these parts, but the beer manager at the nearby Yankee Spirits showed us the secret stash on our last visit. This one is brewed with pineapple, blackberries, ice cream, and coconut.

We've learned to invert the cans for a bit before pouring. This one is purple with about a half inch of foamy stuff on top. It's pretty enough.

Smells like pineapple and ice cream, then a pretty strong blackberry and just a wee bit of coconut. Dessert in a cup.

The taste flips a bit with the berry component coming through strong along with the ice cream. The pineapple works its way in eventually, and the coconut stays nicely in the background. It's fairly sweet with a mild berry tartness. There's a blackberry seed flavor that is kinda noticeable as a bitterness, not our of place assuming they used blackberry puree or whole fruit.

It's thick, it's juicy, it's darn near chewy. But it clears quickly from the palate.

Another fun concoction from Mortalis that has a barely noticeable beer component. But ya know what? It tastes good and these have been a consistently pleasant treat when we find them. Within its genre, I'd say this is in the 4.3 range.

Clear, dark brown body; thick, light khaki hued head, dense and rich texture; nice rings of foam inside the glass. Coffee aroma permeates the nose; dark roast. Rich malt flavors infused with coffee notes; lightweight espresso; heavy bitterness throughout; mild chocolate notes. Heavy body; smooth and silky; semi-dry with coffee notes.

Definitely a bold coffee themed beer dressed up in a mild porter beer base. Nice.

Peach, mango, and catty unripe melon dominate the nose. Aromas are literally bursting from the can and jumping out of the glass. Pithy orange and a sorbet like sweetness there.

A full on Citra hop flavor expression. More mango sorbet, orange Julius, and catty green melon. Low moderate bitterness here, sudsy froth mouthfeel. Soft cotton candy like sweetness with a drying finish keeps it very light and very crushable.

    Cheers New Beer Weekenders :beers:

It seems tradition now that our kids sleep over gigi and opas while the mrs and I watch phish from the comfort of our living room with a candle lit and enjoy the tree for one the last few nights it is up.

Pretty much as good as it gets; I'd really rather not spend new years eve any other way nowadays. Hopefully you both have the same sort of peace and quiet together tonight as well...

Picture of the year right here; the whiskey, a corncob pipe, declaration of independence, beer, screws all in a cloud of smoke; this looks like it should be in some woodworking magazine or something like that.
