Welcome to the first NBW thread of 2023.

It is already afternoon (East Coast time) and nobody has started this thread yet. I suppose a bit weary from the extended NBW threads of the past few weeks?

Well, you regulars know the drill. Tell us all about the new beer you will be drinking this weekend and please share any thoughts you have about the Holiday season which is coming to a close; my wife is taking down our Christmas tree as I type this post.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming:

Don’t be afraid of the dark – Czech Dark Lagers that is!

I have posted a number of times in the past year (2022) that I have been seeing more US craft brewed Czech style lagers. Most have been Bohemian Pilsners (Czech Pale Lagers) but I have seen a few Czech Dark Lagers as well. The word “dark” is Tmavý (or Tmavé) in the Czech language. Today’s new beer is Von Trapp/Counter Weight Tmavé Pivo. And “Pivo” is Czech for beer.

This beer is part of the Von Trapp Stowe style series of beers and below is how this beer is detailed on the brewery’s website:

    “Tmavé Pivo 4.5% ABV 30 IBU | 4-pk 16 oz Cans | | Specialty Offering

This collaboration with Counter Weight Brewing of Cheshire, Connecticut, is the next offering in the Stowe Style series: a modern tribute to the original dark beers of Bohemia. Brewed with floor-malted Pilsner and dark malts, this roasty winter lager has a subtle sweetness balanced by spicy Saaz hops and is naturally carbonated using traditional techniques.”

I have had the pleasure of drinking a number of Czech Dark Lagers during my two week beercation to the Czech Republic in 2019. One of the brands I enjoyed drinking was the beer served at the U Fleků brewpub:

“The brewery/brewpub of U Fleků was founded in 1499 and they claim to be the world’s oldest brewpub. Let’s start our pub journey with the oldest.

They only serve one type of beer at U Fleků and it is a Czech Dark Lager (Tmavý Ležák) and for some reason they serve it in 0.4 liter mugs (the typical draft glasses in the Czech Republic are 0.5 liters and 0.3 liters):

    https://www.morebeer.com/articles/Czech_Beers

I had a half-dozen (or so) different brands of Czech Dark Lager during my two week visit and those beers had similarities:

    · The level of roast was noticeable but quite subdued. Quite different from a Schwarzbier in that regard.

    · The amount of hops used was moderate but noticeable and provided some sense of balance to the maltiness of these beers.

    · The malty flavors were rather complex with a mix of some dark chocolate flavor and some toasted dark bread (e.g., pumpernickel).

    · In the beers the hop flavors added some subdued spiciness and for some brands a flavor that was subtly reminiscent of Coca-Cola.

A couple of US craft brewed versions of Czech Dark Lager had maltiness that boarded on that of a Stout/Porter. Not necessarily ‘bad’ beers but not exactly to style in my opinion.

In the recent issue of BYO (Brew Your Own) magazine Dan Russo of Oakshire Brewing wrote an article about brewing Dark Lagers (e.g., Schwarzbier, Munich Dunkel, Bock/Doppelbock, Baltic Porter, Tmavé Pivo,…) and for the case of Tmavé Pivo he writes:

“Largely forgotten, until recently, Czech-style dark lager is stunning when created and brewed correctly. It’s meant to be rich and flavorful, but as easy to drink as a Czech-style Pilsner. It has low-to-moderate roast character with a slight malt sweetness….”

I agree with much of what he says there. From my personal experience/perspective I would state the level of roast character should be closer to low than moderate. I completely agree that these beers should have a drinkability aspect akin to that of a Bohemian Pilsner (Czech-style Pilsner). When you finish drinking one you very much want to drink a second (and third). They should have the quality of süffig (e.g., drinkability) as the Germans would say. According to an online translator the word süffig translates to chutný in the Czech language.

Let’s see if this beer has the quality of chutný.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Dark brown in color with a BIG khaki colored head.

    Aroma:

A pleasant combination of mostly toasted dark bread but also a tiny hint of coffee (roasty) and subtle chocolate.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with flavors of toasted dark bread, a hint of coffee and some dark chocolate. There is a low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good. It would have benefitted from additional smoothness to the body which perhaps would have been present from a draft pour via a Lukr side-pull faucet.

This beer indeed has the quality of süffig/chutný.

Cloudy, nectarine colored body; some yeast sediment noted; thick, white head, dense and creamy; patchy bits of foam sheets stick to the glass. Nice, roasted grain scent with some fruity and floral-like hop notes. Nice flavor but also a very fruity aste; tropical fruit; orange and pineapple. Medium-heavy body; a bit of citrus bite but also some warm malt tones; semi-sweet feel.

This is a weird one for me as I expect a festbier to be more malt-forward. If I were to do a blind test, not knowing the beer's name or intended style, I'd peg it as a low-key hazy IPA. Overall, a very enjoyable beer, but not what I would expect for a festbier.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

...yes, indeedy, an odd beer in many regards...great looks and a nice, lager-smooth beer...it has aspects of both a Fall seasonal beer and a lightweight hazy beer...as stated in my review, tasty and pleasant overall but it doesn't fit into any classical beer style I'm aware of...

Clear, golden brown body; excellent carbonation; fairly thin head, light khaki colored, dense and creamy texture. Excellent malt-forward nose; roasted grain; dried dark pitted fruit elements in the backgound; leather and tobacco. Earthy sweetness to the taste; figs and prunes; light honey; a fine undercurrent of subliminal booziness. Heavy body; dense and silky on the palate; incredibly smooth residual sugars.

An outstanding offering from Taxman, well-balanced with intriguing complexity.

It's funny that you mentioned the difference between a schwarzbier and a tmavé pivo. I had a conversation with a very knowledgeable guy about this and he was of the opinion that a lot of American breweries do not understand or do not manage to distinguish between the two styles when brewing them, and as a result a lot of czech-style dark lagers made in the USA taste like schwarzbiers.

It is indeed the case that the Czech Dark Lager beer style is not well understood by some (many?) US craft brewers.

As I also mentioned above: "A couple of US craft brewed versions of Czech Dark Lager had maltiness that boarded on that of a Stout/Porter. Not necessarily ‘bad’ beers but not exactly to style in my opinion."

The tricky part of properly brewing a Czech Dark Lager IMO is achieving the appropriate balance:
    • You want the contributions of a variety of dark malts but not too much of any one flavor contributor (e.g., I discussed above that the level of roastiness should be on the low(er) side).
    • It should not be a hoppy beer per se but ideally there should be some contributions from the hops (i.e., Saaz hops).
    • The fermentation aspects should be on the clean side.
    • Adequate lagering to 'smooth out' any unfavorable fermentation 'by-products'.
    • And perhaps most challenging (?) creating the aspect of süffig (drinkability).
In a few days I will once again be homebrewing my annual batch of Czech Dark Lager (Tmavý Ležák) using my ‘tried and true’ recipe:

    Grain Bill
    • Pilsner: 30%
    • Weyermann Vienna: 30%
    • Weyermann Munich Light (I): 20%
    • Weyermann Munich Dark (II): 10%
    • Weyermann Caramunich I: 5%
    • Weyermann Dehusked Carafa II: 5%
    Specs

    Target OG = 1.050

    FG = 1.012

    Yeast

The yeast strain used to ferment the Budweiser Budvar beer

But as with most lagers (or any beer for that matter) the process is just as important as the list of ingredients.

I am happy to report that I have been able of the past year(s) to find US high quality brewed Czech Dark Lagers. One example was a version brewed my a small, local brewery Von C Brewing which I discussed in a past NBW thread:

Good afternoon all! Thank you to @JackHorzempa for hosting this weekend!

I am starting off my weekend with a bock brewed by Maplewood Brewing in collaboration with Cruz Blanca Craft Cerveza: Beebock - a bock brewed with Oaxacan Forest Honey.

This beer pours a lovely, brilliant burnished orange tinged brown color. A thick, velvety tan head forms on the beer. The head lingers for a while, only slowly dissipating over time, but never completely. There is always about a quarter inch of velvety foam remaining on the beer. The aroma has notes of grainy, nutty malts, slight toastiness, a touch of rustic bread and a faint whiff of something lightly sweet.

Taste follows the nose with the malts dominating up front - there are notes of nuttiness, a slight toasted character and some grainy notes. It's not as polished as I want from my malts in a lager/bock - it comes across a bit rough. Beyond that there is a slight sweetness present in the beer, albeit very subtle and more complimentary than anything. On the finish there are some spicy almost peppery hops. Feel is medium bodied, smooth with a finish that trends drier. Moderate, but sprightly carbonation.

Overall if the malts in this were more bready and not grainy, this would be an awesome beer. As it is, it's very good and one I would definitely drink again.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75 = 3.82 (rDev 0%)

I will be back in a bit with a new local Czech Dark Lager - so very on theme for @JackHorzempa 's opening.

Funny you both mention this because the beer I had last week for NBW, was is just labeled as dark lager by the brewery, not schwarz or czech dark:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/43694/631339/?ba=jonphisher#review

After trying it confirmed how I put it in and it 100% was more schwarbier than czech. A very good beer, had a few more this week and confirmed how I felt last weekend.

Well I wasn't planning to have a czech dark lager today but I do have one courtesy of @snaotheus. I will join you Jack and @FBarber later for this impromptu Czech dark lager tasting...:beers:

Jon, I am a fan of the Schwarzbier beer style as well. Von C brewing makes a tasty Schwarzbier the brand as Midnight In the Priory and to the best of my knowledge it is draft only. I ordered a mug (poured via a Lukr side-pull faucet) a week+ ago. My wife took a sip and said something like "That's mighty tasty". I ended up giving her my beer (after a few sips) and I drank her beer instead.

Happy New Year to all New Beer Weekenders. I don't often see fresh (12/7/2022) cans from Foam Brewers in Burlington, VT, locally so I didn't hesitate to buy a pack of Like Clock Work, a New England DIPA. There is something about Foam's IPAs which remind me of Equilibrium before it went big time and started distributing everywhere. It's a certain aspect of the taste which is hard to describe but there is a freshness that pops.

It pours a murky, dirty tangerine color with a two-finger cap of fluffy, milk-white foam and thick, clinging lacing inside the glass. Its aromatic nose offers lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, and sweet, creamy vanilla ice cream. The taste reminds me of a tart creamsicle with the bitterness of the grapefruit and lemon and some resinous pine juxtaposed to the sweetness of pineapple, melon, and creamy vanilla. It's soft and extremely well-balanced. There is a slight peppery bitterness throughout. I wasn't able to discern the hop bill. It's creamy and medium-bodied with pleasant carbonation, and it drinks very easily for 8.2%. A very solid offering!

Pours a dense, thick, oily black, brown head fades quickly leaving a moderately laced glass.
Nose gets some dark fruit, roasted malts, and some cocoa. Taste is similar. Thick and chewy mouthfeel, minimal carbonation. Ogard is Drago backwards, and Drago has been my goto BA RIS for years. this is good, not great, but it's local.

Watching some college hockey in the man cave on a lazy day, very welcomed after the holidays.
Eastern Market Brewing, been impressed with this brewery, this one is a Kolsch, Wunderboi, pours a hazy yellow with soapy head that recedes to a cap rather quickly. Some light lacing, grainy aroma, nice noble hops up front, lemon, biscuit malts, medium body. Lightly carbonated is the only negative here. Excellent beer.

Happy to join everyone this weekend. Thanks @JackHorzempa for hosting, I really enjoyed that beer myself. I was through my 4 pack in no time. Two great lager breweries right there.

This is a close out beer I got at the close out packie. I went by there because there’s a tendency to shove in new stock when the new year starts, I got lucky. I also funnily happened to get 2022 mad elf a buck a pop just like I managed to find 2021 last year. Huzzah!

Grateful by Captain Lawrence. Canned 11/08. Who knows why it’s on close out

Tasty NEIPA. I always find I have less to say about this style because it’s so popular and moreover it’s a style that I just feel less pensive about. It’s a touch boozy but in the best way. It’s an attractive pour, holds its head nicely, mild carbonation. Taste is robust with a sharp hop bite early of earthy, piney and resinous hops, the back end is juicy and fruity. Nothing overbearing. One of the best beers I’ve had from Captain Lawrence and given I really like the can, a good experience all in all.

Cheers, I will indeed be back with more. Some close outs and some not, probably.

I love the age of streaming, ESPN + monthly cost is a steal for all the NHL games. I used to pay $180, roughly twice as much, a season to NHL Network before the ESPN deal. Now I also randomly watch college games from time to time that I never would've been able to otherwise. I'm guessing you want the Spartans to win??
