Finally getting an imperial stout review this year! Ive hit up some other styles and some barleywines, but tonight Im back with the imperial stout crew! Nice to see some new faces dropping some beers in here to start 2023! Also glad our fearless leader @Resistance88 is back on the mend and back with some beers. Im sure he approves of this one. Cruz Blanca brewing in Chicago, Rey Gordo Imperial Stout 13.5% aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels. Courtesy of @FBarber Thank you!!

    onto my review:
Sampling a 500 ml bottle at cellar temp poured into my snifter. Part of winnings from English Premier League last season.
The cap pops too easy and Im a little worried about seal. the beer pours jet black as night with nothing passing through the glass. Also zero carbonation, head, foam anything furthering my concern about the sealed cap.
The beer showcases nice legs on the glass when I swirl, similar to a nice merlot.
Aroma is fudge brownie, roasted malts to almost charred, a bit of vanilla and a lot of bourbon. Also does have a bit of fusol scent, reminding me of the 13.5%! No hops, also no signs of any oxidation or infection, so I think we are in the clear on the cap concerns.
First sip reveals a very thick body and smooth texture. Carbonation is almost entirely non-existent with very gentle small spacious feel. Definitely coats my palate on each sip and leaves residue on my lips too.
Flavor is what the nose (and appearance) advertise. Big dark chocolate notes and some molasses and roasted notes coming together. A bit of vanilla and a large hit of bourbon flavor. This moves to some black peppery boozy bite and a bit of warming on the swallow. No doubt this is a big boozy and bruisy beer!
I am enjoying this even though it is almost still, I dont believe that was intended and do think the cap seal was pour. but no infection or off flavors, just escaped CO2. I am giving a slightly lower look score due to no head/foam.
Very glad to have tried this one and would recommend to bourbon boozy stout lovers!
    4.5 in the BA DB

My posts on BA have clearly marked me as suspicious of production differences when a beer shifts to cans. Some brewers will market a beer under a different name in those circumstances while others will market the beer as the same old beer. When Black Ops was in big bottles, it was "re-fermented" in the bottle with Champagne yeast. When I saw the first cans and their price, I noticed that they removed the text stating re-fermentation from the label. I reached out to Brooklyn asking if the canned version didn't go through fermentation with the Champagne yeast... and they did not respond. I am not relaying this to make any connections to the canned beer being "off" as described, but just adding this to the conversation.

....there's not a better beer than an Imperial Stout...unless its a barrel aged Imperial Stout....that being said, this one's PFG!

A similar question was posed in a 2021 IG post and the response was that the cans did not.

Label says Unlimited Shelf Life , but fuck that cuz our shelf life is!
I always loved Lagunitas' label which said "Life Is Uncertain...Don't Sip."
    So here's to today everyone.

Drinking BBA Old Rasputin and 2022 Parabola. Two old money CA breweries delivering two old money BA stouts. Don't need no bakery detritus, obscure tropical barks, or cartoonish quasi IP theft labels. Just that good brown juice aged in the former home of that good brown water.

Parabola is better, fuller bodied with a more balanced and rounded flavor, but BA raspy is a tough value to argue with.

Coffee in bed, the best kind as I try to fall off to sleep soon.

    Revolution Cafe Deth

This cost $7.50 a can, or twice the price of Willittized, but there is no comparison in terms of the excellent coffee featured in this offering. That said, I really appreciate the Rye Barrels featured in Lagunitas’ offering. Glad I was able to purchase a four pack of both this season of which I’m down to two Cafe Deth and one Willittizeded.
