Time to usher in 2023 with a new post. Had a side by side of Monkish Brewing’s Hellish and Enegren’s Lightest One. Hellish was able to hang sip for sip, gulp for gulp with the Lightest One.

Can’t beat the value of Lightest One, and it’s consistently one of the best, if not the best Helles out of California.

That said, I love both beers. Monkish really has made some great strides to their lager game. While their haze remains on point, I’ve been drinking more of their lower ABV beers: lagers, small saison, and Belgian-style blonde, etc. Enegren is simply consistent. It’s almost boring, and I’ll admit that I take them for granted from time to time, but I’m glad they’re always readily available.

Cheers to another great year in California lagers!

I totally agree with your assessment on Monkish Hellish. Outstanding Helles, and they really do produce great lagers. Their Vienna, Whatever Rhythm, was by far my favorite lager they produced to date and most don't disappoint. That said, their pricing compared to Enegren/Green Cheek is much more expensive. I'd love to see them produce competitively priced lagers on the regular.

Major +1 to Enegren. My only problem is finding The Lightest One in the South Bay (Torrance). For whatever reason most places don't get a lot of it and the stock runs dry quickly. Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

I revisited Bottle Logic Lagerithm last week and was pleasantly surprised. Great dark lager. Hopefully that style picks up momentum at other breweries in 2023 so I can stock the holy trinity in my beer fridge. Helles - Schwarzbier - Pilsner.

    Cheers to CA lagers!

All Mammals Play from SARA. Nice batch. Recommended if you see cans out in the wild.

I SO miss Enegren, as I rarely get it anymore now that the in-laws bailed outta LA. Have a bunch of fieldwork coming up around the Inglewood Oilfield, any bottle shop recs around there that stock Enegren?

The Lightest One is on tap at Green Cheek Sunset Beach location. Maybe a bit of a drive for you. Before Monks Anaheim location opened I would make the drive to their Torrance location. If I want cans to go I’ll do a drive by on the way home from lax. It’s always a plus to see Enegren on tap around my area. Cans are available at Windsor and a few other locals. But no can dates. Turn off.

    !!!

Try 3Ten or Select Beer. The Wine Country in LBC is a bit of a drive but stocks them pretty regularly.

Try Blackbeard’s and Hi-Lo Liquor in Culver City. Not sure both of those places update their inventory on Untappd, but they did in the past, but do call the shop to make sure.

One change during the pandemic is the local WFs always has Reality Czech and Death & Taxes in stock. Occasionally something more interesting will show up. I recently picked up Wee Nibble which is a petite saison.
