Visited Good Word Brewing with my son over the weekend. The co-owner and brewer gave us a tour of the brewery and let us sample several beers. He had just released a new Helles last week. This is Riding Bikes In Munich 4.7% abv. It is really good. So, being the good BA I am, thought I would do a side by side and share my two cents. I had some of the Weihenstephaner Helles on hand, but not the Original, which would have been more appropriate. I love doing these side by sides. Lot fun for us geeks. This was a really tough one.

Appearance: The Weihenstephaner is a little lighter gold and brilliantly clear. GWB had an ever so slight haze. Head retention was similar.

Aroma: Both had a floral, perfume like hops aroma. GWB had more malt in the aroma and Weih. had more hops aroma.

Flavor & Aftertaste: GWB has a little more grainy lean with spicy hops. Weihenstephaner more biscuit & grainy with spicy hops. It also has a distinctive minty/herbal note that I like but some may not. I find it refreshing. Similar low sweet 1st impression that was drying to the end. Both a low, restrained bitterness with GWB having a little more bitterness.

Mouth-feel: Both have a soft, rounded mouth-feel. The Weihenstephaner looks light but doesn't drink as light.

Overall: Still gave the edge to Weihenstephaner but literally a razor thin edge. The mouth-feel and distinctive minty/herbal flavor pushed it over the line. But what a great effort from my local brewer. It was interesting chatting with him. He is a perfectionist, researches styles thoroughly and learns others. It all results in good consistent quality beers. Cheers all!

Well, my box of NA beers from BrewDog in Columbus finally showed up at 2 today - waiting around here all day for it - as "adut signature required" - so weird

This is the first one - Tornado Joe - a nice coffee cream ale - really good! 36 cal / 7 G carbs

Gonna drink this one down then get Emma out for a long delayed hike today!

That's weird isn't it? Just like, I can't get beer from out of state shipped into GA. Not even NA beer. NA beer isn't even taxed the same as regular alcohol beer, but they still restrict direct ship. Go figure.

This is the first time I have gotten MLK Day off, don't know why my office decided to change this year, but there you go.

Anyway, True Anomaly Small Giant Grissette/Saison in the glass.

Max Roach and Lincoln Abbey's We Insist! Freedom Now Suite spinning. A masterpiece, a defining album from the early 60's. I love the album cover here, these came out 4 years before the Civil Rights Act was passed, so it was pretty controversial for the time.

A great live performance of much of the album, a few months before the Civil Rights Act would pass.

Its almost 80 here in Houston, would love for it to be like 60 out ha. Supposedly a few "cold fronts" coming through in the next week or so, but I have little faith in those ha.

I had a RBA XXII the other day that I found to be "dissapointing" because plain old Old Rasputin is my favorite beer, this is somewhat better, but I'll save some bucks and stay with plain old Old Rasputin. [IMG]

    Kane - Head High

Maybe I'm going crazy but I feel that Kane has changed the recipe of Head High several times. In the last couple of years it tasted like a petit version of Heady Topper but this batch (from Jan 2) is a lot more West Coast. No complaints but I wonder whether this was intentional or the result of hop (or other ingredient) (un)availability? In any case, it's still delicious.

No Giannis, no Khris, no problem. As long as they are available for the playoffs it doesn't matter if the Bucks finish #1 or #8 (or#10). The East is tough but the Bucks need to be smart and manage their roster for when it matters.

Admittedly, I'm a warm weather person. I'd take 80 too. Cold used to not bother me that much but the older I've gotten the less tolerant of it I've become. I like it cold during Christmas and maybe one good snow a year but after that it's for the birds!
