Vanilla is a flavor that is perceived as sweet, even though it is not. Our minds just associate it with sweet since it typically goes along with very sweet things like vanilla frosting or ice cream.

Did this add to the discussion? IDK

I'll try to get you exact, but quick answer, DB VSOJ finished about 2X the plato of Boss.

FYI the previews parties will have these old tumbler glasses that you all liked, but with the newer Deep Wood logos, and these are free depending on how the bars give them out which is usually the early arrivers. There's also some new patches and stickers. And most of the preview parties should have Infinity-Hero on draft too which I'm personally really excited about.

It's funny, I was just looking this up in regards to wine. My guess is Marty is just saying that the actual sugar content is relatively low, despite perception of it.

Does this matter to the drinker? Maybe not, but as someone who tries to avoid sugar (I cut carbs where I can, and that's usually not beer, lol), it's at least nice to know, I guess.

I will be at Bitter Pops in the 4pm - 5:30pm range just because of proximity to my home and needing to wrangle the kids and such.

This is what I was thinking. Honestly at first blush it reads like a cop out to me, but I'm not well-versed on things like sweetness scales or final gravities. After catching back up on this thread today I'm thinking it may be a blessing in disguise I didn't score yesterday as I seem to be finding myself to be more and more sensitive and disagreeable to overly sweet beers as time goes on. Still love a good BABW and would have loved to pit this against this years BCBBW.

Well, now we know why quantities maybe weren’t as high for DBVSOJ - it’s heading to Tavour.

I’d love to understand the agreements between tavour and breweries to better understand how these things happen. I mean, sure, you can’t just send them beee that doesn’t sell as fast. But I mean, I’m curious as to whether they get a better margin selling to them, or whether it’s just a bit of quod pro quo.

Am I an asshole for saying this?

Happy Repo Man (Rye Stout) and Working Man (English Dark Mild) are available this week to take home with the season ticket pickup.

I encourage folks to give lager Cold Time on draft a shot, was a Top Ten 2022 favorite beer for me last year, and I hope it becomes a permanent Revolution offering.

Now back to your regularly scheduled DW release discussion.

I had Goose Island barleywine recently and while it was good I prefer regular ol Straight Jacket and definitely VSOJ. And that's without even considering $/oz

Is this because of the flavor profile, or something else intrinsic to each beer?

Put aside the fact that I am a BCBS fanboy for a second. I’m asking, because when I had a can of 21 SJ recently, I noticed that it was all Caremark and butterscotch. FlVors I don’t normally associate with BW oooor SJ, but someone else from BA recently mentioned that was why they like SJ. So, surely I’m not crazy. If that is what you like, then it’s no surprise that the goose version wouldn’t be your bag in comparison. I feel like comparably few BWs go that route.

I regret not taking more careful notes when I last had SJ or VSOJ because those are good questions. I don't mean to imply Goose Island was not good. I enjoyed it. I can't recall anything as specific as butterscotch from my last can of SJ but I feel that it always balances sweetness and barrel in a way I really enjoy more than almost any other barleywine. Sorry I don't have a more thorough reply. I do have a can of 22 SJ and a few cans of DBVSOJ so i'll give it some thought when I open them

Feel free to send me a PM if you don’t want to post. I’m genuinely curious, because I was blown away by the flavors. SJ ‘we was really phenomenal. It wasn’t overly sweet, but it had those amazing sweet flavors. I don’t enjoy those AS much, but i really appreciate just how amazing those flavors were, how they popped, and how well done that beer is.

It’s totally bizarre to me, though, because I don’t remember this previously with past vintages of SJ. But, I don’t think I had 2019 or 2020. I specifically described the B1 VSOJ in my notes as being very similar to BCBBW 2013, which isn’t those flavors at all.
