Good stuff here. @DIM Your thoughts on American vs. English? I’m thinking English, though by no stretch have your experience with Barleywine.

Regardless it is sweet, ton of character, including peat. The bourbon is a light touch, allowing the base style to sing. And the legs, they are long and hanging forever. Full, syrupy texture, light prickly carbonation, and alcohol is dramatically below weight. It warms beautifully. The coffee version is waiting in the wings, an likely will crack open next weekend.

I drink too much barleywine, doesn't mean I know much of anything:slight_smile:

I subscribe to @zid 's notion that the distinction isn't often relevant. It's obviously not a classic, hoppy American barleywine but I've never tasted anything like this from England either. If I was forced to pick, I would go English as well but the main takeaway to me is that it's damned tasty.

I did a wolf whistle at the gams on this one too, loved your review! If it had been available at the brewery a week or two sooner I would have a ton of this in the basement right now.

I agree. I would never pay more than $30 for a bottle from ADWTD again. Sure, it's boozy as hell, but I actually feel like that's one of the things I don't like about this one. I would take a Kane, Firestone, Revolution, or Tree House (and many others) BW over this any day.

I have to add Jackie O's to your list. Tree House gets big points for creativity, have you heard about their latest 2?

Double Baked, The delightfully complex beer in this bottle begins as Tree of Life aged in Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey barrels for 1 year, blended together, then re-barreled into several different apple brandy barrels for an additional three months.
It is then re-blended with a Tree of Life Rum aged in a rum barrel for 15 months. The rum barrel rendition carries a lot of caramel character that supports the apple character from the brandy blend.
Finally, we blend in a small thread of Weizenbock that was aged in an orange bitters barrel for fourteen months. This barrel, coupled with hefeweizen yeast, adds warming spice aromas and flavors throughout.

The Tree of Unity is a bold, sophisticated blend of our renowned barleywine, aged to perfection in chocolate bitters barrels for fifteen months. The rich, caramelized flavor of Tree of Life are enhanced by the unique character imparted by these barrels, adding a distinct and interesting touch of classic tootsie roll chewiness to the blend. Indulge in the luxurious, molten toffee and bourbon-barrels goodness of this one-of-a-kind creation, and hopefully consider its message of Unity to inspire and uplift your spirits-Enjoy!

YES! I knew I had forgotten a few. Jackie O's is VERY high on my list as well. I had not heard of those two new ones from Tree House. They sound very interesting!

Harvey's Christmas Ale. Comes in at 7.5% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a light brown with little head. The nose is really interesting. Mild toffee, figs, an earthy note, dark bread, and prunes.

The taste is really smooth and nice. No lack of flavor despite the 7.5% ABV. Again, big malts on the taste. Bread, toffee, raisins, wheat, prunes, figs, and a slightly bitter hoppy note. A very nice beer!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and somewhat dry. The aftertaste is mostly toffee and dark fruit.

Nice! Have you had a 2006? For some reason that one just tasted so dang good. I have one more 2010 so I'll open that one soon! Doggie Claws is amazing!

    Nope, haven't had that one. I think I have a couple of 18s and a 20 left in reserve and that's it:slight_frown:

    Oh, and a Binkie Claws!

Alright, I'll send a 2006 in the next box! I'm looking forward to opening my Binkie Claws as well - it's a couple of percent (ABV) above the regular!

Any idea what accounts for the ABV difference?

Some beerfest a Brewery brought a barleywine in a sextel. Me and my dad kept on going back to get samples of it. Near the end they wanted to get rid of it so they started to give us higher pours. We made sure it was empty for them to bring back.

    :joy:

I have gone to only one beer fest in my life, probably back in 2005 I think? I camped out at the Weyerbacher tent hitting the Blithering Idiot way too hard. That night was rough and I felt terrible the next day. I just don't do well in a buffet setting.

Interesting, in the mixed 12 pack I order from them (6 Doggie Claws and 6 Cherry Adam From The Wood) they gave me a 2009 and a 2011 but no 2010. It's like they know they're holding out on an extra special vintage :open_mouth:

Is that a recent release? I was able to buy a case last year around this time and hope to again this year.

should be out for distro now or shortly from now.

edit: not to say OP’s couldn’t be an older vintage but i’m pretty sure the 2023 vintage has been available at the kiosk for the last couple weeks and making its round through FFF’s distro footprint.
