@stairway2heavn being in the medical field I thought you'd find this thread interesting. I'd love your opinion as well if you have the time.

I typically don't drink Sunday thru Thursday and will drink 1-2 beers each on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Best way to moderate drinking at home is to only stock Methuselahs in your fridge. When you feel like a beer and see that your only option is to climb a mountain marathon of drinking/ open up a $100+ bottle you’ll probably pass for another day.

I've cut down from probably 4 beers a day (I live in UT so the majority of my consumption is 5% abv or less) to only drinking twice a week now.

I can't stay away from $4 pint night and will usually have 3 at the brewery on Tuesdays, but no more than 6.

And Thursdays for D&D I'll probably have two pints.

So in my mind going from significantly too many per week to 5-8 pints a week and occasionally the odd higher point beer I think is a great reduction.

The weight loss has been slow, but I do think twice a week is great. Be it the weekend or Tues/Thurs like I personally prefer. This way I'm a better use to my wife and kiddos on the weekend.

Cheers! I think this thread has been a great read

Homebrewing beer led me to home roasting coffee. For 20 or so years now I've roasted almost every single pound of coffee we've consumed at home. Every other Sunday I roast 2 pounds, that will last me and my wife for 2 weeks. I worked on drilling rigs, my job involved working for days/nights at a time so i drank a ton of coffee. When I got my first office job at age 48 I cut back to one cup of good coffee per day and I've maintained that for almost 20 years now. I am lucky to have not inherited the addiction gene that has affected many in my family over the generations.

In the UK they use a system of units determined by:

ABV x volume / 1000 = units. They usually display these units on the can. A typical tallboy of 8% DIPA is roughly 3.5 units.

I try to only drink 3 nights per week, generally Thurs or Friday and weekend, and I try to limit myself to two beers per day. However, I count just about any beer - tallboy, imperial stout, DIPA - as 'a beer'.

I've always wondered when consuming this small amount how you pick and choose with the litany of options out there.

I think where a lot of Beeradvocates get into trouble is the constant stream of new, seasonal, or regular favorites...there's just so many...

You probably save a lot of money too! Green beans are super cheap and you can buy in bulk and maintain freshness.

How many units/day and per week are they "allowed"?

So, for about the last four years, I've almost exclusively been drinking those "tried and true" beers that I know I will thoroughly enjoy drinking. In the few years prior to that, I was out there trying every new release and shiny object known to man and more often than not, I was disappointed by those beers. With a few exceptions, I've stopped trying new releases and "hyped" releases and breweries that I'm not too familiar with.

The "Tried and True" 's that I reference are considered by most BA's to be classics (La Fin Du Monde, Orval, Rochefort, Konig, Sunshine Pils, Korbinian, Edmund Fitzgerald to name a few)

Work and a fitness regime harness, holster, leash, and control my fun water intake. There's a lot of people counting on me and I have a good reputation to uphold. With responsibility comes control. After a few days of having to ignore the beer fridge, I sometimes crush a few session ales. I feel healthy, I don't have to look for work, my wife is happy with me and having a few brews a week while participating in BA virtual bar activities is stimulating. Find a good place, broadly speaking, and try to hold on to it and make it work for you.

Any "Tried and True" breweries in CT or in a broader sense, New England?

I like this message. I don't there should necessarily be a judgement on how many beers per week anyone has (to a point obviously).

If any amount negatively affects your career, health (both mental and physical) and/or your personal relationships then that should be considered "too much".

For you that might be 3, 6, 12, 18...per week.

Yep. I never know and I feel I'm in a good open place. My weekly plans change frequently and I might all of the sudden have a freed up day or two. Hello beer!

The NHS recommends fewer than 14 units per week for men and women.

My fridge is divided into four sections:
    -lagers/wheats
    -Belgians/blondes/ambers/etc
    -Pale ales and IPAS
    -Porters and Stouts
I normally drink on (maybe two) of each section every Friday and/or Saturday night. I try to avoid drinking during the week days cause of work in the next day. Seems to work pretty good for me. When is comes to local breweries I barely drink at the place unless I have a friend visit, so I normally buy crowlers from them and put in the fridge.

Personally speaking, regardless of how much I'm drinking I try to pace myself at one 12-oz beer per hour, no matter the abv. Also, whether I'm having a cheap AAL or a good craft beer I try to eat some snacks or a meal that would compliment the beer, at least so I'm not drinking on an empty stomach.

I use to be a weekend binge drinker. Many times til i passed out.. ive been robbed, gotten into altercations, been to court, passed out in the sun leading to nasty sunburns.. very lucky to be alive right now...just complete debauchery and excess. Id drink quality belgians or cheap pbrs or steel reserves. Anything to keep the drunkenness going. Over the years, experience has taught me to "tone-it-down" to say the least. Nowadays I strictly drink for flavor and to open up my appetite(I usually only eat one meal a day). Not a big fan of getting drunk anymore. 1 quality beer(usually a 8 - 10% pint) a day is enough to satisfy my thirst for beer. Exercise helps, weed also helped with my binge drinking. Drinking flavorful carbonated drinks like kombucha also can help you curb your thirst for alcohol.

Pretty soon after getting into craft beer, it became apparent to me that, due to the sheer volume and variety of options out there and my newly discovered thirst for all of these options, I could pretty much have several beers a day, every day.

So, to prevent that from happening, I set myself a weekly limit in litres for my beer intake and keep track of every beer I drink to hold myself to that at least on average. I may have gone off the rails during Covid just a bit, but overall this has worked pretty well for me to keep myself from indulging too much.

I also do Dry January, which I believe to be a great way to gain some perspective on your drinking.

This sounds like the strategy I'd had taken had I not switched totally to NA. Problem was the whisky bottles were so big...

    heres my method:

i cant drink this till all the weight moves off the floor.

    1) makes me lift harder
    2) feels way better knowing i burned a shitload of calories

This plus a healthy diet really keeps weight off and makes me feel *not as* bad for drinking.

You have some good points here. Honestly I struggle with loving craft beer too much.. and wanting volume as well. Lately been buying more and more 16 oz. beers which are often times 7-8% abv and add up fast. I need to dial it back and try to find more 12 oz beers I really like. (Hazy ipa's are really pushing the 16 oz. format which is part of the problem.)
