I quite enjoyed the Black Pils. Has the nice grassy floral pilsener character and rich of roasty of darker lagers.

I also had the new Hoppy Lager using cool pool, tasted extremely similar (in memory) to the Destination Singapore which uses similar technique. Fruity and light.

bit of gripe they close at 9pm on Thursday’s which is early for my liking but do last call at 8:30 for both draft and to go. Plenty of customers still wanting service at that time. Is this some sort of local law thing what is rush to close up? At lease serve until closure. Perhaps it’s just my decade in NYC but 8:30 is still dinner time for plenty folks.

I was initially inclined to agree, but then I remembered an email I got from my CSA farmers (from central MA). They noted that the average price increase for their inputs (fuel, fertilizer, seeds, etc.) was +75% this year compared to two years ago. As JA has only done one small price increase since the move from 4- to 6-pks (last fall 12/15-pks up $1 if memory serves), I'd rather have them raise the price to keep pace with their inputs so that they can maintain their quality standards and not cut corners. Remind me of this post, though, the next time I'm complaining about how much beer costs.

On S&D, yeah that one is hard to stomach no matter the rationalization. Maybe we were getting a good deal previously with a small-scale beer having large-scale pricing? Nah, it still hurts.

Good post. 37.5% to consumers is still huge, though.

I think there's a more human/emotional threshold businesses have to keep in mind, though. I probably think about purchases more in terms of value than a lot of other customers do, but when I get a good value, I remember that and I feel good about it. When a company or product that used to make me feel I was getting a great deal either raises price or lowers quality to a place where the value just feels normal, rather than exceptional, I lose all the positive feelings I had about that brand.

In this case, when JA sold six-packs of 16oz for $9-10, it was something special - a craft beer purchase I didn't even have to think about feeling guilty about. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind I was getting a great deal so I never had to try to justify the cost to myself. With a couple six packs of JA lagers I could leave the store practically feeling like I'd just gotten paid. And in a way, because I'd spent as much on 12 great beers as the guy ahead of me in line had spent on 4 of them, I had.

That remained true for me at $8/4pack, though a little of the luster wore off since I got less beer out of it.

At $11/4pack, it's still a reasonable price compared to other craft beer (I insist $14 for Smoke and Dagger is not reasonable), but it's not a price that sends me out of the store whistling a tune about what a great deal I got. And unfortunately for JA, because I'm a person who ascribes emotion to transactions, and really enjoys the feeling of getting something I like for a price I don't have to think about, that makes me a little resentful. There aren't that many products I buy in any sector that make me feel great about the purchase. Jack's Abby was one. Raising prices a dollar at a time wouldn't change that, but a price increase this steep sure does.

I imagine there’s a lot of “guys ahead of you in line” not batting an eye at prices, if they even look at them.

    Craft beer isn’t a blue collar hobby/item.

Not saying it’s right or wrong, just saying that Jacks Abby will probably still sell the same amount at those prices.

    Time will tell.

Even non-blue collar people who have to support a family and home (including heating oil charges) may make differing decisions here. Food, mortgage, and fuel (gasoline and heating) may take precedence.

    Cheers!

Today's JA newsletter announced that their Czech-style dark lager Bohemian Dusk will be hitting the beer hall and distribution today. The blurb in the email said: "Light and dark are often used as contrasts, but something special can be found where light and dark meet. That’s what inspired this beer. Traditional Bohemian floor malts, Saaz hops, and open-fermentation create a light and easy-drinking beer that is dark in appearance with a hint of sweet roast." The can also says that it will be double decocted.

I had one of their open fermentation pilot beers a few years ago and loved it--really looking forward to this one. I'll be curious to know if any of you in the Boston/Salem area have the opportunity to compare to Notch's Czech dark lagers.

Also, I was getting an order ready for pickup and noticed that some of the brewery prices have come down a little bit and there are more 12/15-pks available. I won't bother listing (check the online ordering link in the OP) but hopefully this will trickle out to distribution as well.

Nope. Here is all the newsletter says: "Available 2/3 draft and package, Beer Hall and distribution." Based on what you've said in the past about lack of non-core varieties, I wouldn't be too hopeful that this will make it to you.

Yeah, in all probability I will not see it in the Philly area. :slight_frown:

But, I did see that at my local Wegmans supermarket they had Kogarashi Rice Lager (four-pack/16 ounce cans) in one of the beer refrigerators which was a surprise for me. Have you had this beer? If so, whatcha think about it?

    Cheers!

I haven't had that one--only available in cans at Wegmans and I don't have one near me. I get nearly all of my JA in cans from the brewery, stopping by every 2-3 months when I'm in the area. Unfortunately, those times don't line up with being able to stay for a few pints on draught.

I went to the Jack's Abby website to see if I could buy Kogarashi Rice Lager as an online order and to my surprise it is not available there.

Is this 'connection' to Wegmans a regular thing? Have other Jack's Abby beers been distributed/sold this way?

    Cheers!

I liked it. A nice easy drinking adjunct lager. Probably a small step up from a Budweiser if I had to pin a description on it.

I just placed four cans in my refrigerator a few minutes ago.

I will be discussing this beer in an upcoming NBW thread.
