Check this out! We decided my glass collection will only grow with especially worthy examples. The below defines worthy. (Heads into cellar, seeking beer worthy of the glass.)

Revisited January 28th, 2023 for the BA Online Duvel Tasting (January 27-29, 2023)...

    Original 2017 scores and ratings: 4.75 4.25 4.5 4.25 4.25; overall: 4.38; rDev: +3.1%

Crystal clear, pale yellow body; modest carbonation; big, fluffy, white head; spidery fingers of sticky foam streak the glass. Beautifully balanced aroma; light cracker-like malt element with a nice light spiciness and sweet grassy herbal tone. The taste is refined; elements of delicate malt with light floral and spicy components; not quite citrusy yet zesty; refined phenol quality; subdued sweetness; easy esters subtly bringing to mind light pome fruitiness. Medium body; soft and delicate; light sweetness and generally lightly sweet mouthfeel overall.

Other than a significant drop in the 'Look' category for me, the beer pretty much measures up (score-wise) as it did for me five years ago. The relatively high ABV is greatly moderated with the soft-touch sweetness and easy going esters. Quite good and very satisfying.

    Pouring temperature: 48.0℉; bottling info: 07 2023 (assumed BBD) L32406 1342
Source: local purchase (Weber Street Liquor)

    ---------------------------------------

Pale golden body with lots of carbonation; frothy, sticky, sculpted head. Excellent fruity aroma; notes of pear and grapefruit. Beautiful light malt backbone with a light, estery flavor; alcohol builds up slowly yet never overpowers the overall taste; very subtle sweetness off-setting the hops and alcohol. Relatively light body; powdery; dry finish overall.

This is a strong beer with character. It exudes a kind of lightness in mouthfeel while also delivering a lot of depth and balance with great flavors. Well-rounded, easy drinking (for a relatively high ABV), and quite satisfying.

One of my favorites, as seems to be the case with many here as well ha.

This pours beautifully clear, I can even see the La Chouffe logo clear through the other side (I always check for the logo when pouring that beer in this glass as well)

I don't know what happened to my Duvel tulip, but La Choufee's is just as good ha. Anyway...

Peppery spice, fruity with banana and apples, yeast flavors. Finishes wonderfully bitter and dry with a bit of peppercorn still noticeable. Beautifully fine carbonation, that is crisp and firm at the same time. I can keep coming back to this with ease. As always, excellent and a well deserved reputation.

Thanks to @FBarber for starting this thread! It's been a year and a half since last having this.

I originally reviewed this back in 2004, in my early days of being serious about craft beer. Rated it a 4.7 overall, a Belgian classic that rocked my palate!

Decided to review again today and it has stood well against the palate test of time. This beer is impactful and pleasurable to my overall sensory experience. A perfect head; yeast that imparts wonderful pear and apple esters; the light body that is creamy and smooth at the same time. Awesome beer!
    Cheers!

I know for certain what’s happened to mine: letting my partner take care of cleaning it in the sink and it ended up in dozens of pieces of glass. A tragic loss. It’s not that hard to buy again, but I’d rather punch myself in the face for my laziness, can’t blame her and I should have cleaned it myself instead.

Ha, I have a feeling my old roommate has mine, I mean we parted ways about 10 years ago. Though we both had about 150 glassed each, when we moved some got mixed or left behind ugh. We are still close friends but he lives about an hour south of me now, and in Houston traffic that is killer.

This beer is helping me achieve both.

nuts! The sound dropped off. My wife is playing harp in the background, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. Below is NOT her, but conveys the idea. Life is rough for me LOL!

First time trying this one. While not as sublime as the original, it is definitely a member of the family.

Seen a nice selection of glassware too here on this Duvel Tasting thread!
I normally get my Duvel glasses from the thrift-shop or 'free' with a 4-pack from the supermarket (we break one about every two years on average). This one is a remake of how a Duvel glass looked like in 1971 (it is a remake produced in 2008 I believe).

    Cheers

Second of two planned for the weekend, this one new to me with a full review in the New Beer Weekend #132 thread. I've really enjoyed the reviews and various bottle collections. I wish I was able to experience the broader range of tastes with the Duvel offering noted by most other reviewers.

    Duvel 6,66%

    Link to my review here.
My treatment here is to compare / contrast vs. standard Duvel.

The appearance is similar despite the different vessels (a Chimay chalice used for my Duvel) as both had exceeding head creamy head and nice carbonation. The lone difference was the murky appearance of the 6,66 offering.

The aroma and taste had the greatest departure, with a dull one note clove banana with the original serving, and a broad range of wonderful flavors people seem to get with both versions limited for me to the 6,66 version. Was (still is, nursing this to stretch out the enjoyment) the experience I hoped OG Duvel would provide me.

The mouthfeels are similar, though I find this to fee slightly stronger despite the ABV and the higher ABV Duvel slightly weaker. I'd have to drink both simultaneously side by side to verify, but my notes indicate a reversal, or at least perhaps a tie in the ABV/strength department.

Bottom line, I despite the fact this opinion may I dare say is possibly sacrilegious, I really enjoyed the 6,66 version and would buy and enjoy more down the road without hesitation. I will continue to leave Duvel on the shelves, but would consider trying at the source or a fresh keg, which perhaps may yield improved results over the slightly above average limited experience I've had with a few bottles over the years.

Really enjoyed participating and will continue to enjoy the thread the final two days. Thank you Frank for hosting and for coming up with this idea!

I like the flavor of the 6.66 , and hope that it continues in their lineup. It is a bit sweeter to my taste than regular Duvel.

The OG, which I haven’t had for a while. There’s that solid, curvy bottle, pours a straw gold, with a little murk but pretty clear and lots of head. You have to be ready when the top comes off of this one. Lots of lacing, also, from the yeast I presume. Smells like clove, banana, yeast, horse blankest (j/k) :stuck_out_tongue:, tastes clove, banana, citrus, a little hop bite and some yeast and must. Also pretty crisp and dry and mouthfeel is pretty light for this Belgian Strong Ale. It’s a damn good beer that I should revisit more often, cheers!

With the bottles I have, I had the same comparative result as you, though I'll get regular Duvel again. In fact, we found newer dated Duvel tonight, and I figured I'd try some more comparisons for this tasting and perhaps beyond to see if I might need an adjusted review.

I just tried Duvel for the first time. I have gravitated to pumpkin beers (the good ones), barrel aged stouts, porters, and a few brews with fruit infusions, coffee, chocolate. I have veered completely away from the golden lagers and pilsners and IPAs'... but I tried Duvel, today. I'm all for sampling the best of anything, and I have to say it's been 35 years since I enjoyed a golden-white beer like this. the blend of sweetness, lemony freshness, yeast, a moderate hoppiness, firmly wheat anchored but with a kick to it... I'll be having this as a summer cool down, no doubt!

I'm finally getting into some Duvel. It's been a couple of years and I'd forgotten how spicy it is! Tons of clove and coriander and more bitter than I recall. A great ale for an online tasting!

Duvel Tripel Hop Citra and it’s stamped for Dec 23 so it looks fairly fresh. Pours a light gold and smells like yeast and hops, and citrus and the taste is a nice bitter hop bite with citrus, some clove, yeast, banana, and a little must. This is good beer that sort of defies labels and gives the best of both worlds and really pops when almost fresh, cheers!

Was happy to pick up a fresh 4 pack of the regular Duvel for this event. My only Duvel glass is from a giftpack from the 150th Anniversary

Well life events unexpectedly delayed my ability to join in the tasting, but I am finally free. Really enjoying catching up on all the posts as I sip these 2!

To kick things off I am doing a side by side of OG Duvel and Duvel: Single Fermented.

First up is the OG - a beer I've had a number of times and am always impressed with. The beer pours a cloudy bright golden yellow color. Huge billowy white head forms on the pour and expands before slowly dissipating. A thin residual layer of velvety foam remains on the top of the beer. Aroma has notes of pilsner malts, some bread dough, then come the yeast with some notes of pepper and a hint of spice.

Taste follows the nose with notes of pilsner malt, bread dough, giving way quickly to a strong yeast presence. There are some peppery notes, some clove and coriander along with some citrus and some lemon zest. For an 8.5% it drinks far to easy. Feel is light to medium bodied. Smooth, but highly carbonated.

Overall a delicious beer and a marker for the style.

Next up is the Single fermented. This one pours a clear golden yellow color. Thin one or two finger head forms on the beer, lingers a bit, but ultimately dissipates completely. The aroma is very subdued with light notes of pilsner malt, some orange and lemon zest, some yeast notes.

Taste has notes of yeast, pilsner malt, some citrus and lemon zest, noticeable hop notes and pepper and coriander on the finish. Feel is light, crisp, and easy drinking. Bright, lively carbonation.

Overall this is a very nice beer.

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 = 4 (rDev +2.3%)

The Single fermented is similar to the OG, but the biggest differences come in appearance and aroma. In appearance, some of the difference may have to do with the can v. bottle format, but I also suspect some of it has to do with the refermentation in the bottle. On the aroma front, the Single Fermented is really subdued - lacking the fragrance of the OG. The taste of the OG is more fully developed and complex. Weirdly, even though its 8.5% ABV I find it easier drinking than the single fermented - or perhaps it's just that I like the OG better.

I still have the 6,66 and the Citra single hopped to go this weekend ... but I doubt either will supplant the OG as my clear favorite of the lineup.

Hey again Duvel critics and aficionados!

Didn’t make a promise I’d be back with a different from their portfolio after the OG but here I am sitting this Sunday afternoon with Duvel 6,66.

Unlike the original one, it’s indeed a lighter beer, ABV wise that is. Name speaks for itself as it’s 6,6% which for those with eagle eyes remind of other Belgian pale ale like Leffe hitting the same mark.

Like Duvel, it also leaves a big and long lasting head, however it’s a more opaque beer and we have a darker golden color.

On the nose it’s apparently more flavorful, hints of orange peels and fruity hops.

On the tongue this is following the above, but only much lighter and easier to drink, that’s to say; OG Duvel is still drinkable but this one appear to be more of a fine spring/summer afternoon drink and delicacy. Orange peels again, sweety hops, a much sweeter finish than the OG.

Mouthfeel is a medium bodied pale ale, drinkable and no warmth or anything that indicate the medium range ABV.

Overall, this is quite good! Probably not the banger Duvel is, but if you enjoy a very well crafted Belgian pale ale with a reasonable ABV, I believe you’d like it. As a few others have pointed out, even Duvel isn’t for everyone, but this one may be your getaway beer to enjoy them.
