Most of these have been mentioned but Bell’s two hearted, SN celebration, allagash white, founders breakfast stout, weihenstephaner hefe, and DuPont saison (along with a bunch of other Belgian classics) come immediately to mind. With dry January over, this thread is making me thirsty.

My dilemma is I can only get the Elliot Ness, which I'm not mad about. Does Great Lakes not distribute the Dortmunder outside of Ohio?

    EDIT:

My search of the local beer store websites do not indicate that I can get this beer for delivery.

I think the true classic for me is gonna have to be Deschutes Black Butte Porter. One of the very first craft beers I ever drank, and still an absolute benchmark for the style.

My dad always buys too many Plinys when he comes to visit. That also means i drink too much Pliny when he comes to visit. Just finished the final bottle he left behind. What a beer.

    Yeah, my dad's a monster.

I texted him a birthday wish and he responded with tear jerking text about how beautiful my young family was and how much I should cherish these years before the kids spread their wings.

Leaving world class dipas in my fridge and then using my lazy birthday text to remind me how lucky I am and, by proxy, how much he cherished my childhood?! Someone's got to stop this mad man!

    A ‘new’ classic?

Sam Adams Boston Lager was first brewed in 1985. It was contract brewed at Pittsburgh Brewing and below is something I posted in a past thread:

"When Jim Koch started Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) he did not have a brewery so he depended on contract breweries. The first contract brewery to produce Sam Adams Boston Lager was Pittsburgh Brewing Co. (Iron City) in Pittsburgh and Jim Koch had a demand that Boston Lager be brewed using equipment that was not presently existing in the brewery so he paid to have this equipment installed in the brewery vs. just brewing with the existing setup."

Well, that was then and now is today and Boston Beer Company has “remastered” Boston Lager.

    Remastered Boston Lager

    On the back label:

“Our tireless pursuit of perfection has led to the Remastered Boston Lager. Made easier drinking through decades of improvements. It’s the beer you love remastered.”

This beer is fresh with the drink by ‘date’ of May.

Jim Koch participated in a Q & A session where he discussed Remastered Boston Lager:

“Brewing technology is another interesting place to play when tweaking recipes. In fact, we’re testing what we’re calling a “remastered” version of Boston Lager in New York this winter to match the modern drinker profile. The reformulated brew still uses the original 1984 recipe from my great-great-grandfather, but we’ve evolved our brewing technology and processes to improve the sessionability of this beloved beer. The remastered version is simply an enhanced, crisper version of the original – like hearing a classic song on new speakers.”

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

An orange/amber color with a big white head. Beautiful Belgian Lace is formed as the beer is consumed.

    Aroma:

There is a combination of hop (herbal/spicy) and malt aromas with the hop aroma most prominent. The first few sniffs are very enticing.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a combination of hop and malt flavors. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

There is a light – medium body with a dry finish.

    Overall:

I think this beer is very good!

I very much enjoyed the drinkability aspect of this beer.

Sounds like it’s still a pretty tasty beer…I thought about grabbing the old one or the original fat tire that’s still lingering around before they’re gone forever. Haven’t had either in a very long time.

I guess if I find the new Boston lager though it may not be a bad thing based on your post.

Out of curiosity did you buy a six or just a single in a mix pack?

It's a bit fuzzy but I'm reading "remastered" on the top label, correct? I haven't had one in years. Is it Vienna Lager style?

Yes, it does say "remastered" on the top label.

As regards to beer style over the years I have seen a number of styles ascribed to Boston Lager with one being the Vienna Lager. In the past (and today) I will opine that Boston Lager is an American Amber Lager since it is too hoppy to properly fit in the Vienna Lager beer style.

Have you been following this thread:
