Excellent thread @jonphisher! It's really ironic too that I opened a bottle of Aventinus before seeing this tread. I can't think of too many other pure classics that tend to get over looked but are still terrific world class beers than Schneider Weisse Aventinus Weizen Dopplebock (8.2%). Per Schneider Weisse: "Bavaria's oldest wheat Doppelbock brewed since 1907". This is my goto to Christmas Eve beer but it good for any cold winter day.

Thanks @ATL6245 hopefully we get some good reminders of great beers in this thread.

I still haven’t had this beer, I see it all the time and just never have went for it. You have my word, by years end I will finally buy one :beers:

I promise, you will enjoy it. Be forewarned, that 8.2% is sneaky. Prost!

Another under appreciated classic. I don't drink it very often because I try to buy local when I can but I don't hesitate to grab at restaurants where the local selection is limited.

My father is 83 this fall and he still drinks his beloved dark German Lagers. It's a real joy to share a beer with your father and I'm thankful I can still do that. Cheer to you guys!

I have a can of Troegs Doppelbock in the fridge. Later today I will drink one as a tribute to you pop!

    Cheers!

P.S. Maybe in a future update there will be a dark beer emoji?

Much appreciated my good man. I went by his house today to give him a German Dunkel and a local Czech Dark Lager he has not tried before. I love to take him something new every now and then.

    Oh, even better!!

My wife drank my last bottle of homebrewed Czech Dark Lager a few days ago; a 'stock' photo of that beer:

I was a bit bummed to see that last bottle 'die' but the good news is that I have another batch of Czech Dark Lager in the lagering chamber 'as we speak'. In another couple of months there will be joy!

    Cheers!

Good things come to those who wait?

Brooklyn has been brewing their Black Chocolate Stout since 1994 and to my mind nearly 30 years of brewing makes this beer a classic.

Until fairly recently the predominant beer retailer in Pennsylvania was what we call Beer Distributors. Often times they are boxy warehouse type buildings and prior to 2015 you had to purchase beer by the case (e.g., 24 bottles/cans) at those retailers. In the winter of 2012 – 2013 I bought a case (24 bottles) and I have one left. Will this beer still be ‘good’ after 10 years of cellaring? Well, let’s find out.

    Served in a tulip glass:

    Appearance

Dark mahogany colored approaching black with a thin khaki colored head.

    Aroma

Aromas of dark malts including chocolate but also dried dark fruits (e.g., fig, raisins, dried plums) as well.

    Taste

The flavor follows the nose with chocolate and some dried dark fruit flavors (e.g., fig, raisins, dried plums). Low/moderate bitterness

    Mouthfeel

Medium bodied, a luscious mouthfeel with an off-dry finish.

    Overall

I think this beer is very good. Frankly I am quite surprised how well this beer cellared for over 10 years.

An enjoyable beer for winter (cold) weather drinking.

    Cheers!

HaHa. I considered picking some up tonight but decided to be more responsible  and got some Anchor Steam. I do think I will pick some up as it's fresh and refrigerated. It's just so BIGfoot. I shy away from the big ABV brews these days but OG SN draws me in.

Given the debate I've read, I'd definitely put this one into the "oldies" realm for me but let others debate how classic it isn't. My initial review was in November of the year I joined this site, with a re-review in the following year. We used to look forward to its release, though over the years I drifted from getting it too often.

OVer that time, the GF would grab a six pack on occasion without paying much attention to age. I've grabbed one here and there but can't recall having any in a couple of years. I wasn't even thinking about this thread when I saw Tasmanian IPA by Schlafly on the shelf of my TW with under a month of age on it. I just saw the date and put it in the cart to see if it still worked for me as a fresh beer, figuring the GF would drink most of them. After finding the last one left in the fridge tonight, however, this thread came into my mind, so:

With a check of my review, I decreased my rating a little, but not much. I definitely like the looks and there's a nice lemon and grapefruit aroma wafting up from the glass. I'm getting a little more of a mix of grass and light pine needle to go with grapefruit pith on the hops side. There is a strong presence of light malt to open, and might be just a little more sweetness from it on the opening that leads to a little heavier beer than I'd prefer. But at a month old, it works quite well overall for my taste as a solid IPA and it reminds me of how they were made when I was exploring mostly IPAs around 10 years ago.

I'll definitely check dates and grab a six-pack if I see it under two months. I'd even try to get two cans if the GF buys one in the next couple weeks

Only thing I remember about that beer, and this a while ago, was just a “wow that has a lot of flavor and is different.”

Looking back it was probably a reaction to the Australian hops, that weren’t everywhere yet and we’re a new experience.

I only see the occasional seasonal schlafly anymore these days. Planning to drink a special to me one tonight or tomorrow :beers:
