Big thanks to @AzfromOz for kicking us off. Wonderful words to get us going. I'm having some internal struggles this weekend! New beer or cellar pull???? Both is the obvious answer. First new beer is Flux from Barclay Brewing. Part of the Extreme Beer Box. Comes in at 13.8% ABV. Another winner. In fact, they have ALL been winners so far.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with almost no head. Looks thick! The nose is amazing. Vanilla, chocolate, malted milk balls, salted caramel, and slight roasted malts. I love when a beer just clicks and I want to keep smelling it. This is one of those.

The taste is great. Brown sugar, malts, chocolate, toffee, vanilla, oak, dark fruit, a touch of cinnamon, and some tar.

The mouthfeel is super thick and the aftertaste is mostly sweet toffee and chocolate. The ABV is insanely hidden on this. Super dangerous sipper! Overall, a fantastic beer!

Dark copper body; lots of carbonation and (perhaps) yeast sediment; thick and sticky head, bone colored; dense, spongy rings of foam encircle the glass. Rich malt nose; toasted malt; earthy spiciness. The flavor highlights dark malts and candi sugar; rye; fairly bold spiciness lingering underneath the sweetness; dull bitterness. Heavy body; thick and nearly syrupy; subtle current of booziness.

A decadent, rich and spicy beer with a strong malt-forward presence.

500mL bottle marked 2019 release poured into a Duvel glass at just above fridge temp 9.6% ABV. The beer pours opaque very dark brown with light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring rum, dark fruit and toasted / roasted malt. The taste is a bittersweet mash up of the rum, barrel, raisins, dates and prunes and malt. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The oaky rum barrel really keeps the sweetness in check and there's a port-like character that is drying as well. ABV is fairly well disguised. Overall, very good to excellent.

    Cheers all!

Helles from Hoppebräu. Poured at fridge temp. Pours an opaque yellow with a small amount of white head. The nose is lemon, grass, wheat, biscuits, honey, and a nice floral note.

The taste follows the nose. Dang, this is a really nice beer. Honey, subtle lemon, biscuits, graham crackers, butter, a touch of clove, and that floral note makes an appearance again on the taste.

The mouthfeel is fairly light and refreshing. This is just a great beer.

    Brewer's Reserve Vanilla Rye Stout
    13.1% stout by Central Waters

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle, the body is dark black. Small initial tan head and no lacing of consequence.

Aroma Is an equal mix of vanilla and rye. Lightly sweet and enticing.

Taste features the rye but the booze never is too hot. The vanilla pairs well with a hearty malt bill to try to balance the rye. Finish is boozy with a slowly fading rye.

Mouthfeel is superb. The malt keeps this stout from being a rye bomb. Smooth and creamy, carbonation seems perfect.

    Fan of rye? Belly up.

    Evening all!

I am starting my weekend off with a little side-by-side action. I came across a 6-pack of the old New Belgium Fat Tire as well as the new Fat Tire, so I grabbed both to do a little compare and contrast.

So in the photo above you can see the old version has a much more robust head compared to the new version - however I poured the new version second, so it is clear the head on the new version is lackluster. Color is essentially the same between the versions - it is a clear, light amber color.

Aroma on the old version is predominantly malty with some lightly toasted malts, bready, and a touch of light hops. The new version is still malty, but it lacks the toasted malt character and instead it trends sweeter on the nose. There are still some subtle hoppy notes on the back end. If you were not really paying attention I am not sure you would really catch the difference on the nose, but if you are paying attention to it, they are clearly different beers.

Taste on the old version is malty with notes of toasted bread, some bready malt and floral hops coming through on the back end. It is very mild and approachable as well as balanced between the components. The new version is malty, but again, it is a much sweeter malt character than the old version. It almost reminds me of a cream ale the way it comes across. The hops are there, but very subtle and subdued. It is easy drinking, but ultimately lacks the depth of flavor from the older version.

Feel Is very similar in both beers outside of higher carbonation on the newer version. Otherwise these are both light bodied, easy drinking beers.

Overall I definitely prefer the old version to the new version. That toasted malt character really adds a nice complexity to the beer that the new one lacks. The new version is not bad by any means, but it does seem to be simplified. And with a beer that was already very straightforward and simple, I am not sure it was a change for the best.

    My prior rating on the old version was 3.63. (3.63/5 rDev +0.8% | look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5)

    For the new version my rating is: look: 3 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3 = 3.37 (rDev -6.4%)

    Hello Late Night NBW...
It's been a while. Life sometimes gets in the way of beer. Shitty, I know, but it does.

    Anyway, here we go.

Tomorrow by Second Chance Beer Co. in San Diego, CA.

Hopped with Strata & Idaho 7.
Best by date of May something 2023
Straw to gold in hue. Abundant white head. 2 inches of fairly dense foam hangs out for a good spell. After a few sips, tapers off to a consistent 1/4 inch milky foam. Lacing is patchy.
Nose pops with some mango, grass, melon, and a zesty citrus punch.
Flavor is a medley of tropical notes with a hint of onion and weed. I'm still picking up hints of mango and citrus, but the grassy notes come in and take it in a few interesting directions. Is it pivoting toward a piney resin or is that more of a weed note. I like this ebb and flow.
Mouthfeel is on the crisper side, drying out a bit at the end. Carbonation is moderate.
    Overall, a very pleasant ride.

Nice review! Do you think there's possibly some subconscious bias against the new one in the BA population at large?

I've not had it, and any one that I do get my hands on will be old so it's a genuine question, and not a dig at us beer snobs!

    Cheers!

One last one for tonight. This finally showed up at a local spot so I was able to grab it: Founders KBS - Chocolate Cherry

Pours pitch black, dark, oily and opaque. Thin one to two finger head forms on the beer. Its mocha colored and velvety in consistency. Aroma has notes of roasted malts, cocoa, dark bakers chocolate, coffee, and a subtle hint of tart cherry. Not much comes through on the nose in the way of bourbon or barrel, but that is kind of par for the course with KBS.

Taste follows the nose with notes of roasted malts, bakers chocolate, cocoa, lots of fresh coffee and hints of bourbon and oak. The cherry is there, but it is very subtle. So subtle in fact that I initially read it as part of the coffee - a fruity coffee - but then realised it was the cherry not the coffee. As the beer warms up the cherry opens up a bit and becomes more noticeable. This is clearly KBS plus some cherry - the base beer is exactly what I remember from KBS with the even handed addition of cherry, Feel is relatively light to medium bodied for a stout. Its smooth and luscious. Moderate carbonation.

Overall its very good and a worthy addition to the KBS name and lineup. I was skeptical of this one, but it turns out its excellent.

Morning, Weekenders! Splitting a special treat with my partner.

On the nose, I really thought this was going to be something special. Alas, while it's quite delicious, it's definitely a letdown on the palate by comparison.

On the nose, the barrel influence dominates, but in a fantastic way. Notes of sherry, port, oak, brown sugar, red grape, cherry, vanilla, prune, apple, toffee, leather.

On the palate, it's far more neutral, and the whiskey leads the way instead of the sherry. Whiskey, oak, red grape, caramel grain, leather, bark, tannins, pear, apple. Long finish with notes of toffee, grape, and cherry.

I like this a lot, but after the aroma, I'd hoped for an absolute world class challenger. It's still quite the treat.

Good morning, fellow beer nerds. I've settled in for my somewhat normal weekend routine when I'm home......catch up on work while watching soccer and enjoying a beer.

My first beer today is another one that I'll cross-post in the Cellaruary thread. This is Fudge, by Tree House. Canned over three years ago, it's been sitting undisturbed in a small fridge in my basement ever since.

As an aside, does anybody else find the can descriptions from some brewers to be a bit much? This one includes the sentence "....to craft a beer that ignites your senses with joy and exhilaration".

Canned December 11, 2019. Appearance is pretty much like every other stout, with the only interesting item of note (at least to me) is the discrete yet persistent small center of carbonation that bubbles up from a single point of focus just off center from the middle of the glass. Almost like the bubbles are struggling to escape something very thick and have to band together to gain the collective strength to breach the surface.

Aroma is very sweet. It doesn't burst from the glass, but up close it's pleasant. Maybe a hair more lactose than I'd prefer, but that sweetness is mostly balanced from some nice underlying chocolate and faint roast notes.

Taste is better than I expected, with a little bite up front (whether from the cocoa or some roasted malts I can't say) doing a nice job of balancing out some underlying sweetness. I do get impressions of chocolate from this, but it's not all the way to fudge. Creamy and full feel, as expected.

Overall, good beer. I don't think I'd want to drink two back to back, but as a slow sipper on a Sunday morning, I'm enjoying it.

I think there is absolutely a subconscious, if not fully conscious, bias favoring the old version over the new version of any beer ... especially here on BA.

That being said, I don't think my preference for the old version was because of that bias - if I had these blind I would have latched onto that toasted malt character in the old one and picked it over the new version.

I had this one last night and fell asleep before I could post it. So, here goes:

Blood Brothers x Yakima Chief Hops YCH Trilled and Tested Dry Hopped DIPA with Mosaic, Citra and Simcoe. This is both a riff on their Trill series of IPAs with rotating hop varieties, and an entry into their recent Over the Tap event.

Pours a very opaque and turbid dirty yellow with ample creamy head that never quite leaves the surface of the glass. Extensive, thick lacing.

The aroma is very dank up front with a broad fruit cocktail in there as well. A slight piney note too.

Flavour follows. Slightly boozy, dank, fruity I an indeterminate/broad sense. A tad sweet, but enough of a bitter finish for me to excuse that.

Thick body with a very creamy mouthfeel. Enjoyable for the style.

This is one of the better hazy IPAs I’ve had from Blood Brothers. I regard them as a tier two maker of the style generally (locally) and this sits slightly above their usually grade. I’d drink it again.

Canned September of 2022. Pours a bright light reddish-brown with excellent clarity and a solid amount of head that displayed good retention. Overall, good looking beer. Nose is mostly sweet grains / corn. Taste largely follows, but with a little more bite than the nose. Some faint malty flavors on the finish, and tasted blind I might have thought there was some bourbon barrel, even though that's not the case. Light and easy going down. Overall, a little more bite from the hops than I would have preferred, but still very easy drinking.

@tasterschoice62 the chatter over in our current BIF thread is that the next BIF will likely be somewhere in the mid-March to early April timeframe, with signups obviously kicking off in advance of that. Basically, relatively soon, but not quite yet.

My wife is at our local animal shelter cleaning and walking dogs, so I'm handling our mutts on my own. They do much better as a singleton than a threesome, so that's how I do it. On the negative side, it takes me three times as long to walk them. But on the positive side, I get three times as much exercise.
My new beer for today is Life in ColorADO, a saison from New Image Brewing.
A dark orange color. There is a large white head that sets a world record for dissipating. No Lace.
Aroma is sweet, fruity, a little funky.
Taste is sweet fruit up front, a little tart, then some funk at the end.
    Crisp, very carbonated.
