That's a great one for sure! I've had a bunch from Jackie O's, they have an amazing barleywine lineup. Prodigality might be my favorite? Maybe? So many to pick from:thinking_face:

Finally got around to reviewing 2015 Utopias, now I want a Bigfoot.

The contrast between the two is making this Bigfoot pop in such a wonderful way! 6 is marvelous age, still has some bite though it's more gums than teeth at this point. Lots of toffee and short bread plus maybe a little sugar cookie sweetness to go along with the fading pithy pine. Such a great beer.

Penrose Brewing - The Other Tomorrow
    Per brewery description:
"A long overdue collaboration with one of our industry friends, we kept saying – “I thought we were brewing tomorrow?” — “no, the other tomorrow”. For inspiration, we took countless laps around the FOBAB floor years ago dissecting the barleywine category and picking apart our favorite characteristics and flavors. Flash forward something like 4 years later, and the beer we dreamt up was finally put into some uber fresh, subtly spicy bourbon barrels straight from Kentucky. As it aged, we once again asked ourselves, is it ready tomorrow? — No, “the other tomorrow”. An exquisite example of base, barrel and time it exhibits notes of dark maple sugar, rum soaked raisins and molasses cookies. An excellent sipper for the winter months."

    Holy shit this is amazing.
Brown Sugar,Caramel, Toffee and sweet raisin riding the backend of masterful barrel aging.
    Illinois killing the game again.

Cross posted this one with the #Cellaruary thread. But figured you B-wine fiends would appreciate it here too!
This is East End Brewing Gratitude Barleywine. Dark purple to maroon color wax, which my investigative skills tells me is 2019 vintage of this beer. Im pretty sure this bottle is from @adrock314 from a trade quite a bit ago which included several other vintages too. Thank you!!

    Onto my review:
Served in a 22oz bottle at cellar temperature into my trusty snifter. The beer pours a rich clear chestnut color and sits in the glass with a bit of a reddish amber hue. Soft creamy beige to eggshell white head foams up and almost overtops the glass. Fades very slowly to a sturdy surface covering and leaves dense clingy lattice on the glass as it fades and after I sip or swirl the glass.
Aroma is some light brown sugar and caramel malt with a bit of plum or raisin fruitiness mixed in. I get a little bit of an earthy hop note buried and mixed with mild hints of black peppery spice, which I attribute to booze.
First sip reveals a medium body with soft texture and fine mostly gentle carbonation. Carbonation has a little tingle if I swish the beer in my mouth.
Flavor is some sweet caramel and brown sugar up front, with a good dose of bitey bitterness in the middle and then a bit of sweet fruitiness rolls in and this fruitiness lingers a bit after each swallow. Plums for sure here.
No warmth or other hints of booziness on the finish and I find the beer drinks pretty easy for the 11.2% on the label.
Im enjoying this one and sorta glad that the flavor profile is sort of multi dimensional. Ive got one more 22 oz bottle in the cellar. We may all get to see that one on this thread too!

I shouldn’t really be drinking this. I’ve been battling an awful case of Covid for 7 days now, and am finally starting to feel better. But I was going through this thread and decided I really want some barleywine. Maybe the alcohol will kill the last remnants of this a-hole virus. That’s how it works right?

I have a 2013 bottle photo and it says Old Ale. Need to look at the last two years I have and see what they say

    Enjoy

Looking to confirm my initial love for Prodigality @Beersnake1

There is something unique here that really works for me. Honey in the form of honey roasted nuts plus some kind of honey wafer candy bar atop toasted coconutty oak and smooooth brown liquor. Loving this one.

Fellas! My first post in a while...took some time to collect a few BIL goodies! Now that I have a few, I'm at a loss on how to get started! LOL! Should I go lowest rated to highest? Highest to lowest? Oldest to newest? What to do, what to do...

    Cheers everyone! :beers::beers:

2022 bottle from a six pack, $17. I have had this beer many times and looking back I have not had one this fresh, September 2022 bottle. Most bottles I have drank were 2-5 years old. This one is quite bitter with mild sweetness. I much prefer this as it mellows. A bit odd as I really enjoy fresh Bigfoot. I am enjoying this beer and as it warmed up it opened more and had nice caramel notes. Going to let the last 5 sit for a while. I think I have some 2020 down there too.

Need to chill those DDC bottles I just grabbed.

    Enjoy

El Segundo ~ Old Jetty 2022

Aromas of dried fig/raisin, toffee, candied nuts, a bit of stewed plums and some alcohol warmth (by way of spice). The flavors bring more of the same with largely a whiskey soaked vanilla spice fruit cake type of vibe. A slight step down from the nose for me. Only Moderately full on the palate though. Sleek and frothy with some peppery bitterness drying out the finish. Some stickiness there but not too sweet. Noticeable alcohol warmth and more spice. Not one of your top tier BA-Bdubbs here but what you have is really nice for the price I would say.

I have to ask... why are so many of these labeled "barleywine-style"? Why not just call it "barleywine"?

I could be wrong but I remember hearing a story that they rejected "wine" being put on the label for Bigfoot back in 1983 but then Old Foghorn used "barleywine style ale" and they allowed it.

I decided to go oldest to newest and then lowest rated to highest as word on the street is this one is falling off a bit now. And,while you definitely should drink 'em now if you got 'em, this is still absolutely fantastic!

While a little age is creeping up on this one, it's still drinking close to when I had 2+ years ago! From my review: "Sweet and toffee-caramel malty, hint of vanilla, and hint of bourbon barrel nose on this one!

Taste follows with a balanced, caramel malty, vanilla-bourbon oak-barrel, and spicy boozy heat finish! Mouthfeel is on point and feels nice and smooth without being too syrupy. Although it's not hitting like when first released, this is still a world-class barleywine!"
