2022 wasn't the best batch of this one for me, but, overall, this is a criminally underrated barleywine IMO.

Having my last bottle of anything from Stoudt's. Co-founder Ed passed away earlier this month so I'm drinking this as a toast to his memory. Thanks for all the great times at the brewery, wonderful memories there.

Didn't get any last year, but I have one from the year before I need to get to soon. I really enjoy this one.

@Eddieeight is right, this is a great one.

Sweet but balanced with a lot of intriguing layers. Love that they ship to my door.

DB VSOJ. Minimal alcohol burn. Really toffee sweetness with some vanilla and maybe butterscotch? Also a backend with a bit of chili spice. Barrel is there but well integrated. Trying to compare to SJ, I think it's a tad smoother despite the added aging and the "sweet" flavors are all turned up, oh let's say, 25 percent, but leather/tobacco is reduced in kind. Suffice it to say this is weak on the raisin-esque flavors in many barleywines I've had.

This smells like Straight Jacket, but the flavor is missing something to get it to the higher levels. I’m not going to get too down on it, because the place I find these things at doesn't really store them all that great (70 degrees, in broad daylight). They have some barleywines hanging around from 2010, but they usually don’t taste good.

Just couldn’t choose one picture. My wife, likes the dark one better. Vampire that I am, it is somewhat more difficult. Darkness is gooooood. But then again… there’s the appeal of glowing blood red. In real life, the color is more of a bright red copper.

Thick like blood too, no legs, but the staying power of the cling is a thing of beauty.

Figs, plumbs, a dabbing of sherry and Kawffe (coffee for all you non Jersey natives) and light alcohol fumes. The charred malt, spice, and molasses is very nice indeed.

Flavors are interesting. The coffee shines against a mild, balanced backdrop of sweet bitterness. Warmth definitely kicks up the figs, prunes, unsweetened raisins, and malt. The MALT! Toffee and char are exquisite. The finish is mild, by comparison only. It grips the throat for a long time, saying, “enjoy that espresso, my friend. Enjoy all the nuances.” And yet, the coffee never quite dominates. It is quite perplexing, but YUM.

A full body with a soft smooth texture, interrupted by light prickly carbonation. Alcohol is a tad lower than expected, for 12.6%. There is a mild warming sensation and nibbling on the tongue reminding one to take it slow.

Definitely more British then American, although less so than the base beer. This is an excellent choice for sipping and whiling away the hours. Wonderful as this is, personally, the base version is preferable. Still, this bottle is goin down!

Indeed, he was quite a character. Third date with my wife was at the brewery. She ordered the DIPA, I knew it was meant to be.

Nice review, coffee was excellent but I preferred the double barrel-aged as well. It would have been interesting to try the double barrel and the extended single barrel without the coffee side by side.

Hazelnut Bourbon Barrel Brick Kiln - 12.7% barleywine by the masters at Jackie O’s. Conditioned on hazelnuts, cacao nibs, and vanilla beans. Sublime.

Barley Barge from Jackie O's (in collaboration with Permanent Hangover). A blend of bourbon barrel-aged barleywines. I know @DIM is a fan of this one!

Poured at fridge temp into a Jackie O's snifter. Pours dark brown (almost black) with pretty much zero head. The nose might be one of the best noses on a barleywine in quite some time. Rich toffee, plums, blackberries, vanilla, maple, a soft chocolate note, and a nice layer of brown sugar. Dang!!

The taste phenomenal. Again there is the rich gooey toffee, plus maple, brown sugar, raisins, prunes, vanilla, chocolate, and honey. Sooooo good. The mouthfeel is thick and viscous, with almost no carbonation. The aftertaste is rich toffee all the way.

Wheatwine, a style so underappreciated and seldom brewed that there is only a top 22 rather than 100 here on BA. True story, look it up. This is a hit or miss style for me, Wood Ya is a bullseye.

Sweet, but not obnoxiously so. There are plenty of layers here to keep this interesting. The bourbon barrels are assertive and work well with the sticky sweet honey, toffee, and ancillary fruit notes of plum and raisin. This and Goose Island's wheatwines are the pinnacle of the style for me.

I'm so happy I got to try this, 2022 Revolution Double Barrel VSOJ

Let me just start this off with saying that this one cracked my top 10 of all time, currently sitting at #7. I just recently had regular VSOJ, and I enjoyed this one quite a bit more. For some back story here, I've had Tavour downloaded for years but never used it. I heard somewhere that Tavour might get some of this, so I decided to actually start using the app. As soon as I got the notification this this was available I jumped on it, grabbing the 2 cans I was allowed.

The appearance is the most unremarkable thing about this one. Just an opaque dark brown with a very short lived head, but with the expected legs. The nose was pretty similar to VSOJ for me, but more fruit than spice. Lots of sweet bourbon and dates with a heavy oak vibe and a bit of rye to spice things up. In taste, it's surprisingly gentle for the complexity. Tons of burnt caramel and maple with a melange of dark fruits and oak to balance it out up front. Less sweet on the back end, with a much more heavily charred oak vibe, and assorted nuts and fruits over the top, all the while holding the vibe of a sweet bourbon. I was struck by how easy this drinks for 16.8%, and it's quite dry too. All in all, this is a fucking awesome beer. Believe the hype
