One question on how reviews vs ratings levels work, though. If I review a beer (which includes rating the beer) does the beer get counted only as a review, or as a review plus a rating? That is, is the only way to increase your stats for beer ratings to not review them? I hope I'm misinterpreting this.

 

I think they are totally separated, so you get both if reviewing. Clearly reviewing is supported, more points.

How do you then rate a beer and review? Do you not rate the beer when you are reviewing?

Do I now rate the beer, get the karma, then a day or two later add my review to get the review karma?

Then karma could go down at times when you review, if pure ratings go below a threshold? Hope not...better to let them be locked once granted. But that would put people in different positions if they review directly or later.

 

Yeah, this is what I was getting at. Seems a bit weird to make them mutually exclusive categories when one of them requires that you take the action of the other.

Edit: I like that you've separated them as stats, but maybe for points you could do Beers Reviewed = reviewed stat, while Beers Rated = rated + reviewed stats?

 

Sometimes I feel things are not always fully thought out.

That would prevent karma from going down at times when adding a review to a previous rating. Could be psychologically important?

If I rate a beer I get those points.

If I go back a week later and review do I lose the rate points or get both?

Yes, think you could, if you don't hit a new review level simultaneously. Guess you will have to rate another beer then, without reviewing, and you get your rating points back!

I foresee some problems with this, people posting at times: where did my karma go? I added a review, and my points decreased
