For real ale purists, is there a good way in Beer Advocate to identify which pubs/bars/restaurants sell cask conditioned ale that uses the traditional beer engines to dispense the beer?

There use to be a flag on a places page, that would indicate if it had cask or not. That was a long time ago though, and was dependent on good information from the person that submitted the place originally (and maybe some future updates). Other than that, either read some reviews, as that might be mentioned in the text or the places various social media coverage if there is any. Of coarse none of that is perfect, especially for a quick view. I always liked the Cask Y/N flag, but again that could be outdated, and often was. I know of lots of places that started out with beer engines only to get rid of them later unfortunately.

Be aware that the use of a beer engine doesn't necessarily mean the beer is cask-conditioned.

I once saw a list of local bars that had "cask ale" on another website (not BA) and I drove out to Asbury Park to visit one. Kinda a hipster/expensive place, sat down at the near-empty bar in the early afternoon and scanned the taps and looked for a handpump nearby. Saw nothing. There was a young hipsterish dude leaning against the back bar and I asked him.
    "Do you have cask ale?"
    He mumble something.
Me, being old beatnik hippie hipster, couldn't make it out. I asked again.
He mumbled more and seemed to be pointing to some weird tap handle next to him (not a handpump) in the middle of thel line of taps.
I squinted at it. There was some sort of cartoon figure on it - was that a snowman? (I will skip my rant about the illegibility and gaudiness of most modern tap handles.)
    "That's cask ale?"

    He grunted affirmatively.
It was this MICHELOB WINTER'S BOURBON CASK ALE

Oh man, a brewery near me just installed two beer engines and I was excited. The try to put something on over the weekends usually. I tried it out, and it was just a regular keg beer, already carbonated run through the engine..WTH?? The other place in town that use to do really good English styles on cask, well the owner and head brewer left. So the beers are a pale imitation of what they once were, and don't think they even do cask anymore. I can't get cask anywhere around me now :slight_frown:

The current American discussions I’m aware of here are:

    1. In the universal “Beer Talk” Cask Appreciation Piston or Gravity Dispense thread, where BAs are sharing their random cask experiences.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/cask-appreciation-piston-or-gravity-dispense.669724/

    2. Starting a Cask Availability Thread in your respective region (assuming Pacific / West based on your state).

I planned on going to Yorkshire Square in Torrence last month until I heard they sold their brewery to Project Barley.

I understand Macleod may be able to remain open after business issues reported before my visit.

I appreciate cask, but the only places I can count on it being still available in 2023 among the limited places I’ve visit are:

    Chicago, Illinois:
    • The Beer Temple - Regularly
    • Goose Island Brewpub - Regularly
    • Revolution Brewpub - Occasional
    Henderson / Las Vegas, Nevada:
    • Mohave Brewing - Regularly
    • The Silver Stamp - Occasional
    Washington DC:
    • Churchkey - Regularly - Multiple Handles

The below is not specifically helpful to @JohnnyAngel but there are a number of places in the Philly area that serve beer on cask (e.g., beer engines).

A couple places close to me in the Philly burbs:

    · Forest & Main (Ambler): three beer engines

    · Troubles End (Collegeville): two beer engines

The Sly Fox brewpub in Phoenixville has beer engines installed but I have not visited that location recently and on my last visit no beers were pouring on the beer engines.

Below is a link to “The 15 Best Places for Cask Ales in Philadelphia”.

It’s my understanding that https://www.macleodale.com/ still sells Cask Conditioned Ale in California.

They are Cask Marque certified too; which is a good way to know you'll have a competent cask ale experience. There are only a handful of U.S. breweries/pubs that have that certification, unfortunately.
