Oskar Blues Hazy Blues Juicy IPA, 7.0% ABV; 4.08 overall

Pours a very turbid gold with one finger of eggshell colored head. Good head retention & better lacing

S: Citrus forward, a little bit of tropical fruit there too, some nectarine once warm

T: Tangerines, dryness, a little grapefruit, lime & green melon, plus dryness up front. More dryness, grapefruit, green melon & lime as this beer warms up. Finishes with pomelo, a little sweet orange & plenty of dryness

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, pretty good balance, but was hoping for just a little more sweetness

Super solid hazy, was wanted just a little more flavor pop. Still very drinkable

Happy Weekend all! We're on vacation here in Miami and I finally got to stop by Union Beer Shop on Calle Ocho today and grab some beer. Great place to grab assorted singles if you ever find yourself in Miami. It's a small local shop and the beer is way fresher than Total Wine. This beer I grabbed a 4-pack and drank the first 3 on the boat this afternoon. (bonus beer drinking selfie)

Time to actually review it for NBS ...

Tripping Animals - Dark No Mamés

Pours a dark cola brown color. Opaque even when held to the light due to the darkness of the beer, but it shows great clarity around the edges in the light. Thick, frothy mocha colored head forms on the beer, lingers a bit, then eventually dissipates leaving no residual head. Aroma has notes of lightly roasted malts, some cream, some coffee and light bready notes.

Taste has notes of bready malts, some rye bread, lightly toasted malts, some mild roast, a touch of coffee, and some light creamy notes. Feel is medium bodied, smooth, but still easy drinking. Moderate carbonation.

They described this as a Mexican dark lager, but its not really like any mexican dark lager I have ever had ... its much darker, richer and more robust that any other example. This is more akin to CDL or a schwarzbier. Regardless its delicious and well crafted. Really enjoyed this one.

Gift from my neighbor in return for leaving him some beers as he couldn't make it to our Tues pint night.

Canned 12.12.2022, so on the verge of almost too old, but I think it's fresh enough.

    Nice mango and lemon aroma

Wasn't sure about the hops at first sip, but I actually quite enjoy the lingering aftertaste on the back of the tongue

    Balanced carbo bite and crispness.

Not a regular go-to for me personally, but sure wouldn't mind having one again

Founders Chocolate Cherry KBS, 11.6% ABV; 4.16 overall

Pours an effervescent ebony a pinky of mocha colored head. Average-ish head retention & lacing

S: Rich chocolate & coffee, some cherry notes, great nose

T; Super coffee forward, very dry & roasty, some dark chocolate & a little cherry, plus woody hops up front. Coffee continues to dominate once this beer is warmed up, some chocolate note & a little cherry, mostly roasty & dry. Finishes with some chocolate, more coffee & dryness ) some from the barrel

MF: Medium to thick body, subdues carbonation that picks up as this beer warms up.

I prefer barrel forward & less coffee. If I stumble across another 4 pack ( still not in Arkansas that I know of ) I will age & see what changes

Yes, there are some limitations in terms of accessing the Beer Talk Forum once you click "Beer Forum" Dates. For the several surrounding dates, the Wayback machine lists threads from Feb 06 and prior, and page two are from December.

The proper anniversary was actually the week before, February 20, 2005, with the thread "Newbie Beer Tasting" either the discussion thread that led to New Beer Sunday, or the actual title of the first thread that hosted the tasting. One cannot access the thread through the Web Archieve Website.

Newbie Beer Tasting (2 replies): https://web.archive.org/web/20050219044015/http://beeradvocate.com/forum/

From now, on, I will reference the Third Sunday in February as the Anniversary.

Clausthaler Dry Hopped NA. Pours medium brown with a one-finger white head that left some lacing. Nose is hoppy and roast malt. Taste follows, very slight sweetness, moderate hop and roast malt, slightly bitter. Nice mouthfeel, overall excellent.More flavor than most NAs.

...I like Gray Whale...the botanicals gave it a nice, delicate dash of flavors...I've never been a fan of gin (e.g., Beefeaters, Tanqueray), but this one really appeals to me...I'll still remain a whiskey (primarily bourbon) guy, but this is a nice change of pace...

Good morning NBS and dual thanks to both our host @NorsemanOne for the kick off and @ChicagoJ for keeping he clock of NBS going. 18 yrs and going. This is my favorite corner of this virtual beer bar.
Todays offering is from Four Quarters, and why not review a classic style on this Anniversary of the thread.
This has a lovely depth, with enough flavor depth to keep your interest piqued.
    Cheers all

A - Lovely dark mahagony, excellent, mocha cap, great retention.
S - Toast malts, a bit of cocoa powder, Earthy hops, and a touch of smoked malt.
T - More of the smoked aspect, with excellent tension between the chocoalte and the light smoke.
M - Medium in body, crisp and delightfully dry.. The finish is quick and invites another sip.
O - A very good brown ale, long a favorite style of mine. This offering has enough depth, and flavor to keep your attention.

    Good morning NBW.
Full disclosure, this one is from last night but I ran out of steam before I could post it.

O’postrophe. A 4.5% Irish Dry Stout from Sapwood Cellars. I have visited them twice in two weeks and have sampled decent variety of styles. This is the first stout.

16 ounce can poured into a nonic pint glass.
    Canned 2/13/23

L: Dark brown and clear, it blacks out the glass, one inch light tan head, foam is a little rocky and fades to a ring in five minutes or so.
S: Roasted malt, cola, sweet chocolate-like malt aroma.
T: Dark roasted malt, dry, not acrid, hint of sweetness adds balance, medium bitterness, hops showing at the finish.
F: Light-medium weight, medium carbonation, a creamy body with a crisp edge right through.
O: Nice, very drinkable, the low ABV makes it versatile, well done.

I like to think of this style as a utility beer for fall/winter activities. Whether at a fall festival or a day of fishing on the Chesapeake I can (carefully) drink flavorful roasty beer all day and avoid drunkenness and hangovers.
    Cheers!

Greetings, fellow NBW/Sers. It's been a busy weekend for me full of largely mediocre beer (side note, Carlsberg is legitimately awful), but good food and plenty of time with friends. Today is a bit more chill, as I'm settled into a normal weekend routine of soccer, work and beer.

Up first today is I'm Not Dead, an Imperial Stout from Bellwoods Brewery in Toronto, received courtesy of @Coronaeus
    [IMG]
Bottled July 1, 2021 and received courtesy of @Coronaeus.

Appearance is the standard dark, dark brown / black. Almost still, with close to zero carbonation and almost no head. Aroma is excellent. Simple, yet delicious smelling with rich chocolate and roasted malts. Taste mostly follows. It's sweet up front, but has a really nice light, roasty bitterness on the finish that balances things out perfectly. Nice, full mouthfeel.

Overall, I love beers like this. No adjuncts, just a very well done straight up imperial stout with plenty of roast and some natural sweetness to balance things out. I could drink this anytime.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Snulip glass bottled on 11/02/2022. Pours a very attractive clear bright orange with a 3 finger sticky off white head that leaves loads of streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

Aroma is candied apple, peach, maple syrup, fruity esters, clove, peppery spice, and warming alcohol a ton going on. 4.25

Taste follows plenty of alcohol, apple brandy, peach Schnapps, maple, fruity esters, and spicy clove. 4.25

Mouthfeel is above average, maybe a little dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 12.8% this is a pleasant sipper. 4.5

Overall I really appreciate this beer. Well made and extremely complex. A fan for sure. 4.25

A delicious entry into my fairly limited Barleywine catalogue. Emmanuel Goldstein from Cerebrus in CO. Courtesy of a generous LIF win from the one and only @beergoot

Thanks a ton Dave, I really like this.

Pours a drab and opaque caramel with a thin tan head reducing to a persistent cap and spotty lacing. I believe it resembles a caramel apple in this bulbed glass.

Nose is caramel sauce, brown sugar, rye bread, and black cherry. Some vanilla and oak character works its way in subtly due to the barrel aging.

Taste follows suit with a surprising bitter hop character showing through towards the end of the sip.

Mouthful is smooth and mouthcoating but not oily. Velvety may be a good term to use here. Overall, very impressed. 4/5 across the board.

Good morning, Weekenders! We've got a pretty exciting day ahead of us, including my partner getting her largest and most complex tattoo to date. First up, though, some pre-lunch and post-workout libation:

    Odd Side Reinoso

Reinoso is a BBA imperial stout with coffee, clocking in at 11.6% ABV, and was sent my way via a LIF associated with NBS BIF #16 by @Whyteboar - one of many excellent beers he sent.

Reinoso is really damn good, but it's also a really interesting beer. The coffee is quite noticeable on the nose, but not on the palate; the bourbon is hot and strong, but not aggressive; despite the massive ABV, the yeast expression seems to bring more to the table than the malt base.

For a BBA coffee imperial stout, I feel this is missing some of the coffee, but it's otherwise really damn good. I wonder if some age would help tamp down the bourbon bite, but that would probably also even further restrain the coffee.

    4.09 / -0.7%

FWIW, my partner - who loves these kinds of beers, and likes her whiskey neat - didn't make it past three sips on this one (more for me!). I don't know if it was the nuttiness, the banana-like yeast expression, or the almost neutral whiskey effervescence and heat. But again: more for me!

Next up on the agenda: some Mexican food for lunch before another new beer. Cheers!

I liked this one alot. The coffee was subtle but it allowed the other aspects to shine, as you noted; barrel and dark fruit namely. Sometimes I open a coffee Stout and can't taste anything but coffee. This one is refreshing in that it allows the sum of its parts to be recognized. Cheers.

Long week or three now for me. My wife is staying with her mom to help out and I’m parenting solo. I’m also starting with a new firm in a couple weeks and the move is taking up so much time it is ridiculous. On the positive front, my six year old twins got their first term Grade 1 report cards, and I’m pleased to say that between them, they earned six A grades, five A- grades and one B+ grade. It makes for a very proud daddy. To top it off, my daughter entered a writing contest and her short story has been selected as one of the winning entries to be published in a book later this year. Yee haw!

With swimming lessons over, and lunch in front of them, I am taking a rare moment to enjoy and review a beer received recently as part of a generous box from a great BA in New Brunswick, @polloenfuego.

This is Fredericton, New Brunswick’s Half Cut Brewing Deep Pockets DIPA.

Pours a bright straw yellow, lightly opaque with moderate head that dissipates slowly leaving a light film and lovely lacing as the beer is enjoyed.

The nose shouts citrus with some piney undertones and a good deal of dank to boot.

Taste follows. Citrus pith, lemon, pine resin, lovely dankness. Nice bitter finish. This hits the spot.

The body is full and creamy.

This is a great beer from a brewery that is new to me from this box. Glad to have tried it and look forward to my last Half Cut can in the fridge, perhaps later today… Thanks Pete!

Paranthetically, I’d like to ask for everyone’s thoughts and prayers as I await what I know to be a generous box from @jonphisher that cleared customs, and then fell off the map a day away from expected delivery. Thank you.

As previously stated, I don't have a ton of experience with barrel aged BW. I found this to be complex, less cloying than some examples, and a really good mouthfeel. I hope your second go around is more favorable brother. Cheers
