Yep, this was outstanding. I'm sure I'll never see it again but if I do I will stock up the cellar.

Here we go! Its been a bit since I shared a barleywine. This was cross posted with #cellaruary as well. Fox Farm brewery in Salem, Connecticut Copestone 2019 vintage, aged in bourbon and port wine barrels. 13.5% ABV according to the label. Ive got 2020 and 2021 bottles down there too. Lets see how this one measures out.

    Onto my review:

    Vintage evidence on the label

The beer has been in my cellar since purchase at the brewery in 2019. The beer pours a rich mahogany color with almost no light passing through my glass. A dense spongey beige head of 2 cm foams up and fades slowly to a sturdy surface covering. Dense sticky lattice develops as I sip the beer or swirl the glass.
Looks the part of a nice barleywine.
Aroma is rich and malty with toffee, brown sugar, caramel and a little bourbony note too. Not boozy and certainly no hops are showing up here.
First sip reveals a medium body with a bit of sticky texture and a coating on my lips after each sip. Carbonation is gentle and mild on this brew.
Flavor follows the nose with some caramel and toffee mixing with brown sugar and some darker molassess notes. I do get some bitey black peppery heat and a bit of lingering dryness on the finish as well. So the booze isnt entirely hidden on this one. I find that I am enjoying this one quite a bit and sort of wish I had a few more bottles.....But that isnt the point of #cellaruary, right!?!

Definitely unlike and Barleywine I've had previously. Wickedly sweet, heavy, and syrupy.

Not American or English as far as I can tell

But at $5/can, it's hard to pass up. So thankfully I have one more!

Sadly, my local packie hasn’t stocked it on the regular (why would they, when there are 300 “local”, canned hazy SKUs to fill the dry shelves and cold box? But I digress) since 2012.

Still, it’s a standard by which American stylistic interpretations can be gauged, and if I need to chase it into the suburbs to find it, so be it!

    Cheers

Flim Flam from Side Project in collaboration with Casita. i had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint. the bourbon, rye and port barrels used all complimented not only the rye-heavy base beer but each other as well. port-like sweetness, toffee and caramel with a thick, sticky mouthfeel. loved it. cheers!!

Pipeworks Intrinsic Duality #2! Canned 04/13/21
    4.25/5 rDev -0.9%

Poursa reddish brown, small khaki head that's gone in a flash. Nose gets some burnt sugar, toffee, taste bud's get toffee, dark fruit and a bit of alcohol burn. Thicker than a normal Barleywine, minimal carbonation. This is excellent!

Triple barreled! So it is not the ordinary nonsense? Not even the extra ordinary nonsense? Then it must be - extraordinary nonsense. lol

it smells great from two and a half lakes away.

I split a Fonta Flora Periodic Motion Vanilla with my wife's friend tonight.

I've read reviews that call batch #1 a vanilla bomb, so I entered this bottle of batch #2 with some trepidation. Thankfully, the balance here is wonderful. The toffee, fig, and raisin, I remember from the regular version are all here, but the molasses is not as discernible. The vanilla is not all that assertive, melding well with the other elements at work here. We are both thoroughly enjoying this. Fair warning, be careful with the last pour. There was some coagulated something lurking at the bottom of this bottle. Not a big deal, I certainly do not regret the purchase.

Nope, just that it was aging in barrels for quite a while. I think it’s only going to be on their website since they don’t have a physical location. So, definitely will be shipped.
