unless labeled as a “black barleywine” (whatever the fuck that even means) do you find many that are black in appearance? i find most to be murky puddle water brown to a deeper, darker ruby-ish brown..

i know what you’re saying! the lighter brown ones tend to be the uglier ones in my experience.

to me, i think of straight jacket and it’s ruby red edges with a darker brown center appearance. beautiful beer all around.

Tomas - I still have not cracked mine yet given my quasi-FIFO method for imbibing.
Did not see a Yelp or BA rating for this from ya @Resistance88. What would you rate this?
    Cheers!

I am very excited for this treat I got from @Beersnake1 a few months ago. Binkie Claws, a collaboration between Hair of the Dog and De Molen. Bottled in August 2015, the description reads exactly like Doggie Claws, the the ABV is a few points higher here at 13.5%.

The pour is a pretty one, with a small sticky head atop a ruby tinted, dark copper colored beer that shines with perfect clarity.

The taste overlaps with some vintages of Doggie Claws I've tried, but not a lot. At this age, D.C. is usually a good deal sweeter. Lots of toffee up front that take on a charred, biting quality as the hops assert themselves more and more towards the finish. I get a little sweet orange juice up front and there is a nice lingering cherry note with hints of potpourri like dried fruits and baking spices at the back end. More and more of the fruit emerges as this warms and breathes. I am getting a strong raisin flavor towards the middle now as I'm finishing the glass. Marvelous beer, thanks Tim!

I always wish I could age my more hop forward barleywines for 5+ years to get some of the sweeter flavors to develop naturally. However, my will power is very weak. Longest I’ve ever been able to do it is a bottle of bigfoot for 2 years

The old ones I find on the shelves are always no good (imo due to storage at 70 degrees in daylight for years)

My weak willpower means I buy too much damn beer. Makes aging it easier:grin:

I've never rated on Yelp !
    :stuck_out_tongue:

    I would easily give it a 4.
It wasn't bad at all, though not something i would want again.

felt like all the barrels kinda clashed with eachother but wasn't a mess .
My wife who's a major Barleywine head really enjoyed it though and that's what counts!
Grateful for your recs , everything you've sent me and look forward to everything comin. !

Any idea how to find the bottling date for these? I can tell it’s going to be quite good with more time

They used to date their bottles right below the neck, but I don't believe they're dated at all now.

The few bottles I've ever had of that were infected. Has caused me to never try to buy any more. I'm sure they have fixed that by now but PTSD is real.
