In an effort to expand our regional forums, keep them organized, and grow engagement over time, this morning I applied the following updates:

    New Parent Forums:
Existing regional forums are now nested (as subforums) accordingly and we'll break out additional subforums as needed.

    Updates:
    • Mar 5: Links to subforums are now displayed under the parent forum info for desktop/wider displays
    • Mar 6: Mobile now displays subforums in a single column
    New Subforums:
    Rest of the World
Threads that were previously in the Rest of the World have been moved into their regional forum or subforum, and that catch-all forum has been retired.

    Protips for Getting Around:
At first, the extra click (from the main Forums page) might be disruptive for some, but here are some ways to help you easily discover new posts/threads vs. relying on the main Forums page:
    • Breadcrumb Navigation: Located at the top and bottom of every forum page. Example: If you're in the Belgium forum, the breadcrumb will read: Home (icon) > Forums > Regional > Europe and clicking any of those will bring you back a level.
    • Open Quick Navigation: Click the righthand icon located in the breadcrumb to jump to any forum. It remembers where you are when you open it too.
    • Subforum Menu: On desktop, simply click the subforum menu (appears after the number of discussions and posts) to jump to one.
    • Watch Forum: This link appears at the top of each forum when viewing its list of threads. It not only allows you to receive alerts when a new thread or reply is posts, but the forums you watch will also appear on the site's homepage.
    • Forums > New Posts: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/find-new/posts (self-explanatory)
    • Bookmarks: You can always create bookmarks in your browser to your favorite forums.
Anyway, this sets us up to grow our regional forums now and should help with engagement vs. treating the "Rest of the World" as an afterthought.

    Thanks for reading. :beers:

Haven't you tried this regional format in the past? It looks familiar.

Either way, it definitely de-emphasizes the US compared to what we had before. I don't think it will drive any international traffic but if you are able to drum up some new international visitors it might make them feel more welcome.

Yeah. I've tried some similar formats over the decades, but I've been thinking about this iteration for a while now.
Agreed. This alone won't drive any significant traffic from outside the United States, but it might make some visitors feel more welcomed and encourage them to join and post.

Great. Another step to go before I get to sort through a bunch of posts from a thousand miles away when looking for my local news. Lovely.

I created Protips for Getting Around just for you. And it should be easier for you to post about beer in Kiribati now too.

You can also just bookmark the west forum. I always land there when coming to the site.

If a single mouse or finger click is burdensome, though, you may want to speak to your Dr. That could indicate some serious health problems.

As noted in a previous thread with a user from Ohio, I use the internet in a manner that is simple and direct for me. Someone else may want 20 tabs open, I do not. I back completely out of a site everytime I finish up. If I come onto this site 12 times a day (and, most days it's more), it's a cumulative hassle. Adding layers is not improving simplicity.

And yes, I am still salty as fuck about the NW forum getting lumped in with SoCal and Colorado. Adding another level on top of that is yet another aggravation.

Choosing to have a shitty experience out of stubbornness is certainly one way to do things

I’d say a better user experience would be to add direct links under any of the folders including regions that contain sub-folders, so there is a direct link to everything on one page.

For additional space to facilitate, not sure listing the number of posts / discussions under each folder, or at least under the initial forum link (see below) is very meaningful. You can still keep / display that information on the next page after one actually clicks open a folder.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/

I’d keep the latest post display time/date as helpful to decide whether to skip over a folder without clicking open since your last visit.

Would also echo @BBThunderbolt ’s sentiment that the truncation of several US Regions into four folders makes navigation unwieldy. A more focused deeper dive within 6-8 US subregions would encourage more focused discussion and smaller states and breweries to have a space at the table. Currently I see “Breweries “too small” to have an individual thread because 12-17 states are jammed into a single region folder” threads.

The United States has over 2 million posts jammed into four folders, whereas Europe has more folders (five) to navigate through 3.5% of the volume of posts (2.0M vs. 0.07M).

Just offering at least to me thoughtful user suggestions / possible enhancements as a heavy user.

2 unnecessary and aggravating seconds. Sure, let's make things more difficult for actual users in exchange for the ease of possible future users.

Hardly the end of the world or a major inconvenience (obviously), but also definitely a change for the worse. Format changes should make the forums more accessible and user-friendly, not less.

I might play around with categories vs. nesting in subforums, which would result in more scrolling on the main Forums page though. Could be a nice compromise and still meet my goals.

One user's opinion: a tiny bit more scrolling is far less annoying than is another click for a new page (again: I realize these are both trivial).

There you go. I'm going to grab a beer now and unplug, but I'll tweak things a bit more in the AM.

    Happy scrolling!

Reverted back to nested for more testing/feedback. The goal here is to organize regional forums to accommodate longterm growth beyond the United States, so we're going to try this forum structure for a bit. We can always adjust (within reason), based on your feedback.

I'm looking for constructive feedback vs. unhelpful/snarky knee-jerk reactions, banter, and joking about revolting/hacking to bring back old forums because you don't care about the rest of the world, don't like change, etc. (I cleaned up this thread.)

I also encourage everyone to read the Protips for Getting Around section of my post and try different methods on desktop and mobile.

    Thanks.
