Another stellar barleywine from Kane. Plenty of caramel and molasses provide a sturdy base to showcase beautifully bountiful bourbon and subtler notes of raisins, dates, leather, vanilla, and gentle oak drying things out at the back end. There is also a subdued vinous quality at work here. Damn these guys make a fine barleywine.

Barley Wines are a unique treat that showcase how the really good S. cerevisiae, the ones best capable to ferment grain and throw delicious flavors, can be coddled and cajoled to produce magical elixirs, despite being given an alcohol environment they usually aren't capable to withstand. So the really skilled brewer can take IIPA ingredients and Chico yeast, add to them, and produce a +/- 15% beer that tastes like nectar of the gods, and more than ably provides a state of mind that is beyond wonderful. This is a thread in praise of Barley Wine, which I completely endorse, though I haven't the collection of poetic paeans for BW's as I do for stouts (written for yearly tastings back in the day). So let's just keep it simple-

Here's to those brewers able to provide us with Barley Wines that in many ways are the culmination of the brewers' craft and art, and certainly are among the most enjoyable of beverages in every way. Cheers!

In case you didn't see it, there will be a March Madness beer tournament coming up soon. Looking at the list of top 68 beers (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/popular/), it appears that there is ONLY ONE barleywine! The world is clearly messed up. Regardless, that beer is Bigfoot and I assume we will all be drinking and posting our pictures of Bigfoot during the tournament. I mean, Bigfoot must get through to the final round!!

    WHO'S WITH ME???

I've only ever had Brew 3000 (2019) and it was last year. Possibly the best beer I've ever had, definitely the best BW.

I don't see a wrong answer in the picture. My favorite there is Matt though.

Speaking of pale and good looking barley wines, I'm now mostly done with this 4 pack (recycled pic from an earlier can). I'm always happy to see a barley wine that hasn't touched bourbon or something. This one touched a foeder, but fortunately for me there wasn't a strong, off-putting oak character. This one was very fruity. Some herbal hop character for balance would have made it more appealing to me.

Had it once and remember it being a magical experience. So I agree, maybe start with a different one so you don't have a chance of going downhill after it.
