Great start to the thread today, @AzfromOz !! I'm kicking things off with a barleywine, compliments of @DIM in a trade a while back. This is a barleywine from Browar Fortuna out of Poland. Comes in at 12% ABV. Categorized as an English barleywine on BA, but to me it tastes much more like an American barleywine. Doesn't specify on the bottle.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brown with a hint of orange. Maybe a half inch of head that quickly says goodbye. The nose is very fruity. Stone fruit mostly - apricot and plums. Some red grapes, apples, toffee, big malts, refreshing, bread, and a very slight hint of maple.

The taste is excellent. A nice hoppy note appears first. Citrus peel, plums, grapes, honey, leather, oak, Turkish delight, and slight banana. Really interesting. The alcohol is barely noticeable.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a bitter aftertaste. Dry. Overall, a really nice barleywine. Thanks for sending this one, Dan!

    Westmalle extra
    ...cloudy light gold appearance
...slightly thin body with plenty of almost prickly carbonation
...aroma is apple, bitter apple skin, malt, yeast, brown sugar and floral.
...taste is very dry with a very slight apple sweetness. Taste lingers long especially the bitter apple skin as well as some mild apple juice.
...its an odd one but it is definitely good. To be fair I've worked a whole week in 3 days and the sleep deprivation might be having an effect on my taste[IMG]

Toppling Goliath Brewing Company - Celestial Paradox

Double New England IPA with Galaxy, Strata, Citra and Simcoe hops, from America (7.8%).

Pours a hazy, dark orange coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuitry malt and tropical, citrus hops, with notes of passion fruit and grapefruit, as well as hints of dankness.

Taste is an excellent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, dank, slightly spicy and resinous hops, with tropical and citrus notes of passion fruit, mango, papaya, grapefruit, orange and lime peel, as well as hints of pine, lemongrass, peppery spice and herbal weed. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some passion fruit, grapefruit, lemongrass, pine and weed lingering in the aftertaste. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This reminds me a lot of the European NEIPAs that I love so much insofar as it's quite hazy and juicy, but also dank and slightly resinous, with a good bitterness in the finish. The hops stand out rather expressive and well-defined here, with bright passion fruit from the Galaxy/Strata, grapefruit from Simcoe and mango/orange from Citra, as well as Strata and Simcoe adding those dank, resinous accents. Really well-balances NEIPA that dares to be a little different and just to my personal, with a great body and mouthfeel as well.

@Blogjackets took pity on my poor whiny soul and sent me four of these, when he noticed me complaining that I missed Lagunitas' Imperial Red Ale and I couldn't find much like it anymore.

    Bone Head, from Fat Head.

12oz can served in a snulip. Dated 02/27/23. Received from @Blogjackets because he's super nice.

Pours dark nutty brown / red with a medium sized head. Head eventually settles into a thick creamy skin and a maybe three millimeter thick dense creamy ring. Beer is quite clear, with a not-so-subtle carbonation evident at arm's reach. Smell is caramel/toffee, nuts, sweet yeasty/breadiness, grapefruit rind bitterness.

Taste is similar -- sweet caramel and toasted nuts with a blast of grapefruit rind / pine bitterness. Resin sticks to my lips and enhances the green bitter character.

Mouthfeel is thick and resinous, gives a little bit of a cottonmouth response. Overall...this is great, right down my alley when I'm craving an IRA.

Thank you so much, friend. You can stay at my house anytime. My wife's a great cook. Do you like toffee? I can mail you some home-made toffee.

This ginormous BA stout pours black with a sudsy, soapy tan head that dissipates pretty quickly. The nose has lots of chocolate, some roasty char, and a big vanilla note. Wow.

The chocolate is forward on the taste, and quite delicious, with the vanilla following and doubling down on the delicious note - and then a surprise, with a substantial stone fruit flavor of dark cherry cleansing the palate and flowing into the roasty char that settles at the back of each sip. This is extremely well executed, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, perfect for this beer. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had from Lumberbeard, and this is at the top of the list.

Hello friends, happy to be back...I enjoyed drinking through all your posts today, @Mdog you definitely had a nice one two combo posted today.

Today brings a local beer from my favorite NJ brewery, and lucky for me close to home so all their beer makes it right down the street. I'm very fond of all their traditional styles but their English ones in particular are where they shine the most I think, they even can condition all of them now for cask like feel...today's also brings one of the prettiest labels I've seen in a while too...

Tonewood Brewing - Bedford (English Dark Mild 3.8%)

Pours a dark muddled brown; nice beige colored head, creamy looking in nature, above average retention, some lacing.

Nose is doughy with some noticeable toasted character; some deep earthy tones, brown earth…woodsy.

Taste again has a very pleasant toastiness; the earthy comes off a little chocolate like, minor tea on the finish.

Light body, very soft, gentle and pleasantly low creamy carbonation; finish is quite dry and a nice little touch of bitterness.

Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of English style beers; it won’t disappoint.

    —————

See you all later tomorrow sometime, enjoy whatever is in your glass tonight. Unless it’s heady, then enjoy what’s in your can.

Clear, light gold body; almost no visible carbonation; thin, white head, sudsy. Nice light grain nose with just a hint of herbal spiciness. Agreeable flavor; toasted grain; light to moderate hop bitterness; light herbal undertone. Medium-light body; gentle toasted warmth; lightly edgy metallic bite.

I waivered lot with my scores. My initial impressions weren't bad yet taste and mouthfeel didn't provide much 'wow factor' initially. While the appearance and smell remain somewhat weak, the taste and mouthfeel did develop nicely as the beer warmed a bit more.

I'm glad Untappd is calling it '2022' and classifying it as a golden.

Additionally there is a 'characterless' tag as a description for it and I think it's terribly funny and fitting!

Suited me for the purpose of working on cooking dinner.

Ārpus Brewing Co. - TDH Nectaron DIPA

Double New England IPA triple dry-hopped with Nectaron hops, from Latvia (8%).

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical, citrus hops, with notes of guava and orange, as well as a somewhat odd, quite earthy note coming through strongly.

Taste is a good balance of fruity, juicy, quite earthy and slightly herbal hops, with tropical and citrus notes of guava, passion fruit, pineapple, orange and grapefruit, as well as certain earthy and herbal accent coming through in the aftertaste. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some guava, grapefruit and earthy/herbal accents lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Something seems odd about this one, not really having the flavor profile that I was expecting from a single-hopped Nectaron NEIPA. It seems to lack those bright peach notes that I've come to associate with the hop variety, while having a rather strong, earthy, musty accent to it that seems rather atypical. Still, there are those tropical and citrus notes of guava, passion fruit, pineapple and grapefruit as well, with guava and grapefruit standing out particularly.

Overall, this makes for an interesting, somewhat unusual drinking experience that is not unpleasant, but defies expectations. It's probably the triple dry-hopping, to be honest, completely unnecessary and bring out a certain hop burn.

Next new beer is Composition Bourbon from White Rooster Farmhouse Brewery and in collaboration with Scratch Brewing and Millpond Brewing. Imperial stout aged in bourbon and comes in at 12% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours jet black with almost zero head. Looks like it has zero carbonation. The nose is intense dark chocolate, roasted malts, bourbon, black licorice, and molasses.

The taste is insanely good. Sweet chocolate, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, raisins, maple, brown sugar, plums, and cream. Dang this is a hell of a beer!

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, and the aftertaste is milk chocolate. Overall, this is a masterpiece.

    Crispy Girls After Dark

5.2% Czech dark lager by Talking Cursive

Poured from a pint can, this Czech lager pours a dark brown with a nice white fluffy head. Some lacing.

Aroma is light and a toasty cracker and a touch of malty sweetness.

Taste is biscuit, faint chocolate and a light pine. Crisp and refreshing, this one is light and easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is average and good carbonation. I enjoyed this one more as it came to room temperature. Despite the nuances of the mix becoming apparent as it warmed, I could easily see one pounding this crisp, easy drinking lager.

Greetings NBW faithful. Another drizzly, raw Saturday here. Built a Lego model with the grandsprout this morning and it's an experience watching the unfettered mechanically inclined mind of a 6 year old at work... Our daughter sings in, and is president of, an a capella mixed gender barbershop chorus called Voices United. They sponsored a concert at a local college, so that made for a pleasant afternoon. While it was a good concert, the genre does get a little repetitive. A couple of the featured quartets did push the boundaries, so there was enough interesting stuff sprinkled in. And grandson absolutely loves his auntie, so that was great.

    In the glass:

Odell Brewing Company Barreled Treasure, Spirit Hound Straight Malt Whiskey version.

It pours cola colored, but looks pretty dark in the glass. Short head that succumbs quickly to the liquid, scant remnant ring, no cling. I pour on the aggressive side, so a bit of a surprise even for a high ABV (12%) stout in my opinion.

On the nose, not much when cold. When it warmed up, a little cocoa powder, a little prune or raisin, a little roast malt. Still not much there.

The taste strikes me as very sweet, like molasses or dark brown sugar. Raw whisky is prominent. No bitterness, no bite from hops. Despite the raw spirit taste, not getting much else from the barrel - no oakiness. I do not notice the 12% in particular, but the missus said she thought it was way too hot. There's a faint chocolate, way way way late in the aftertaste there is some licorice-like spiciness. I am confused by my perception of sweetness, and the raw whisky flavor is dominant.

Feel is medium bordering on heavy. Not quite flat, but damned close.

Overall, not a winner for me as it sits. Maybe this one should have gone into Larry's Beer Witness Protection Program for a few months. But I'm thinking about whether the stout base is strong enough - when the whisky part calms down what's going to be left? Gotta call it like I taste it right now, so I'm leaning toward the 3.7 ballpark. Scanning the handful of reviews thus far, the scores and written comments are all over the map. This one is a miss for me.

Fine Balance Brewing Company - Other Half

Bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Coffee Stout from America (9%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of sllghtly roasted, caramel malt, coffee, chocolate and vanilla, with hints of bourbon and oak as well.

Taste is a good balance of slightly roasted, caramel malt, strong notes of coffee and lighter chocolate and vanilla, as well as hints of brown sugar, dark fruit and Bourbon-soaked oak. Finishes on the sweet side, with some coffee, chocoalte and vanilla lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, with a medium body and carbonation.

While this is a bit too sweet and not quite roasted enough for my personal taste, it still makes for an enjoyable example of the style, with distinct coffee and lighter Bourbon notes, supplemented by chocolate, vanilla and hints of dark fruit and licorice. What it lacks in roasted malts, it makes up for with dark, roasted coffee providing a good counterpoint to the sweeter milk chocolate, vanilla and brown sugar notes along with the licorice.

Overall, this makes for quite an enjoyable example of the style that grew on me as I drank it. It may be just a tad too sweet, but is well-balanced overall, without feeling quite too heavy, sweet or boozy.

Good Saturday night, New Beer Weekenders. While at Ludlam Island Brewing today I tried Harry's Chocolate Side on cask. Now, I'm having the original, Harry's Darker Side, brewed with Organic Sumatra Coffee from the coffee supplier located next to the brewery. This is a huge Stout at 14.5% And like the variant I had today, it's exquisite.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a stemless glass at about 60°. It pours a very dark walnut - nearly black - with a creamy, medium-mocha head and sheen of lacing. On the nose there is roasted malt, burnt coffee, dark chocolate, smoky char, and just a whiff of dark fruit. The taste is strong and rich with acidic coffee, dark chocolate, raisin fig, caramel, and nutty char. There is pronounced bitterness at the finish. The flavors are big and bold. The mouth feel is luxuriously thick and creamy with lite/moderate carbonation, and the alcohol level is noticeable and warming. Overall, Harry's Darker Side is quite a Stout: big and bold with lots of flavor. It's a sipper for sure and a very good one. Ludlam has produced quite an Imperial Coffee Stout. I'm mightily impressed!

Next new beer is Outward Sign of Inward Grace from Holy Mountain. Compliments of @kemoarps in BIF #16. A blend of puncheons and wine barrels that held spelt and oat-based beer fermented with their house mixed cultures. After blending, it was racked into a second set of oak barrels where it briefly rested on grenache pomace and went through second fermentation with brett.

Poured at fridge temp into a Cantillon balloon glass. Pours a nice orange/yellow with white fluffy head. The nose is full of white wine, orange, mango, sour grapes, vanilla, and a touch of barnyard funk.

The taste is sour candy, funk, pineapple, vanilla, and grenache. Some leather and an earthy note come through with a few minutes of settling. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, fairly dry, and comes with a nice aftertaste of sour grapes. Just a lovely beer.
