    4.03/5

    16oz canned on 1/12/23

On the pour a finger of white foamy head was present that over a few minutes became rocky and more foamy but settled out only losing half it's height. Good retention. Body is hazy like pineapple juice, but darker like orange. Leaves some decent lacing.

Aroma is basically your modern IPA, big citrus with some pineapple and mango. I'm going to call Citra POG from now on, I swear.

Taste is surprisingly smooth with low bitterness, and all the hop flavor. Tastes of floral and herbal pineapple and mango with a hint of lemon, but not tart. Some light malt shows itself in the background but it isn't prominent. A slight resinous note pops up in the finish.

Feel is full and smooth, but quite dry. Medium finish. Feel matches ABV. There may be oats in the mashbill, but I wouldn't put money on it.

Overall this feels like the predecessor to the NEIPA. Big hop flavor with less focus on malt. It is good, and it is very drinkable, but not my favorite beer ever personally.

...like you, I found this an odd beer...I rated it a bit higher only because it probably met the brewer's intent, but I wouldn't buy another bottle...

    Howdy denizens of NBS!
    Cheers and well met.
So Frank started me on a personal quest to find all the black Pilsners, preferably Czech ones, and try them.
They are still not as common as I would like but my last trip to my favorite bottle shop was productive in finding 4 different ones.
This is the first of them.
Poured cola black-brown with those reddish tints. A proud bone white head stood 2” in my Pils glass.
The aroma is lost on my nose currently, hopefully my sense of smell will return someday.
The taste, well I bought it because I thought it was a black Pils and it called itself that. But as it is listed as a Schwarzbier and not a Pils I will go that route.
The style has precious little taste requirements beyond balance and this is a little more malt heavy than hops so balance isn’t met. The taste itself though, full of chocolate and dark bread and medium roast malt. The hops are present only in the sense that they keep the flavor in check.
The feel is excellent, this is way too easy to slam.
OA, black Pils or Schwarzbier, I don’t care. I could drink another one right now.
    Cheers all!

Black Meridian from Cellarmaker. A black barleywine aged for 22 months in Weller bourbon barrels. Comes in at 14.6% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours pretty much black with pretty much zero head. Looks like a big beer! The nose is bloody incredible. Brown sugar, burnt toffee, big boozy bourbon, a touch of black licorice, plums, figs, vanilla, and a hint of maple. I have picked up similar notes on other barleywines, but the difference here is the shear intensity of these notes. Cellarmaker killed this one.

The taste really good, but is slightly below the nose for me. It's quite sweet - maple syrup type sweetness. The bourbon clearly comes through a lot as well. Big toffee and vanilla notes. There is charred wood, slight smoky note, molasses, plums, sticky sweetness, and an earthy kiss. I think my only complaint is that the high ABV does come through as almost a solvent note. It's very subtle, but it's there. Overall, super intense flavors all around.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a mixture of sweet and bitter on the aftertaste. Overall, a really fun black barleywine!

Cheers to @hopley for this Equilibrium Brewery dHOP47 DIPA, 8.5% ABV; 4.27 overall

Pours a very hazed gold with 2+ fingers of eggshell colored head. Sheets of lacing & good head retention

S: Tropical & citrus fruits, they persist from beginning to end

T: Green melon, tangerine, lime, a little grassyness & passion fruit, plus dryness up front. Grapefruit surfaces as this warms up, more lime, a touch of pomelo as well, plus some acidity. Finishes juicy with grapefruit & lime, plus a little dryness

MF: Medium body, fairly subdued carbonation, good balance, some citric acidity on the tongue

Easy drinker, pretty juicy, I like these a little sweeter, but would be in my rotation if available here

Pühaste - Roulette Hop Series: Lotus

New England IPA with Mosaic and Lotus hops, from Estonia (6.9%)

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical, citrus hops, with notes of mango, passion fruit and orange, with just a hint of vanilla as well.

Taste is a great balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly grassy and herbal hops, with tropical, citrus and berry notes of mango, passion fruit, orange and blueberry, as well as just a hint of vanilla coming through as well.

I think it's a bit of a shame that Pühaste has this series of experimental hop variety IPAs and then does not do it single-hopped but uses 50% Mosaic every time. That certain orange creamsicle note of Lotus still comes through nicely here though, with a vibrant orange character and just a hint of vanilla, with some strong tropical notes and berry accents from Mosaic as well. Overall, this makes for an enjoyable NEIPA with an interesting orange creamsicle character and quite vibrant and well defined hop profile in general, as well as a good body and mouthfeel.

Pours a viscous burnt orange color with a creamy white head that literally paints the glass. Absolutely lovely hazy. The nose is filled with dank tangerine and grapefruit rind and some peach notes. Wow.

The taste is rife with the tangerine and grapefruit rind flavors, but I really digging the pronounced peach flavor and that nice little dollop of sweet oats at the back of the palate that is delicious and so balanced that you get no sense that you’re drinking an 8% ABV NEDIPA. World class stuff, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is well carbed, juicy, and on the softer side. If you’re a hazy fan, Tree House is the standard you should seek, IMHO.

My St. Patrick’s day beer, since I didn’t get to drink it then. Can’t believe I never rated this one.
Poured stout black into my pub pint glass and sported a 2” light brown head which left sheets of lacing all the way down.
Still not getting aromas. Stupid Covid.
The taste is all they describe- hefty malt bill and copious amounts of balancing hops for a typical Guinness edge.
Feel is almost creamy even though it’s not nitro or anything other than the 12 ounce bottle.
A little higher ABV than the original but for the additional flavor it is definitely worth it.

I think this will be my last one today, I have some shelving to install and using a level when inebriated isn’t a good idea. At least when you are also using power tools simultaneously.
    Cheers all!

TRVE Brewing Co. -- Behind the Eye
    India pale ale
    ABV: 7.0%; pouring temperature: 43 °F; canning info: n/a
    Source: local purchase

    look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Clear, pale yellow body; dense, lazily rising carbonation; thick head, frothy and white, lasting. Nice aroma; a little subdued but with floral and light fruit notes. Rather bland taste; hints of bread crust; moderate hop bitterness; clean. Medium-light mouthfeel; crisp; feels 'bright' on the palate; semi-dry.

All factors with this beer lead me to see this as more of a hoppy lager of some sort, not an India pale ale. Hop presence in the taste, other than bitterness, and aroma lay low in the background. If this were a lager of some sort, it would rate much higher in my book, but I just don't get the IPA aspect of this beer.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

...I agree with @eppCOS with his review summary of this beer: "...carries off a Pilsner/IPA combo in its overall impression."...
