There's a Czech Dark Lager thread in Beer Talk. The only one I have found in California is Moonlight's 9 5/16 °P which is a delicious beer. Are there any other great ones out there in our great state of California?

Enegren and Urban Roots have them. They may be seasonals though. Sante has Flowers at Dusk, but technically is classified as just dark lager I think.

The differences between dark lager sub styles in reality are pretty blurred. Some of us want to be purists, but in reality the brewers will change the styles and names on a whim.

For example D&T describes itself as a San Francisco style dark lager. What that means is anyone’s guess. On ba it’s the #1 rated “European dark lager” which apparently encompasses 3 sub styles.

The one made by Bierstadt in CO is technically a collaboration with Bagby in Oceanside. I believe they sell it there, too. It's one of the best US examples I've had.

Urban Roots in Sacramento. 11 Degrees Czech Lager. Just had one the other day.

Description: Polotmavý is a rather obscure Czech style Lager but it is also incredibly delicious. This beer features spicy and grassy notes from the use of 100% Czech grown Saaz with a toasty, bready and malty body courtesy of the higher kilned malts all while finishing crisp like a Pilsner.

But what does Polotmavý mean? We’re glad you asked.

Polo means “half” and tmavé (or tmavý) means “dark” so this beer is Half Dark (or Amber) Lager.

That looks right up my taste buds alley. With all the sunny and warm weather it really would be nice to have a local place focusing on lager. Maybe some day.

Bortz was just recently released by Highland Park Brewery. Bortz is our 5.5%ABV dark lager named after our former brewer’s D&D character, Bortz. A dark beer with notes of chocolate, bread crumb, & a touch of hay. May or may not be available for shipping within CA.

Right before Mumford closed they released one of the best Czech Lagers i have ever had:cry:

Bortz is ok but i dont think it's worth seeking out if you aren't really close to them.
