What Beer Are You Drinking Now? #3808

Too early for me to have a beer, but just a reminder that today is Orval Day. I hope to be back later today to raise a glass (or more) of Orval,



This is a very special beer. It is brewed in the Notre Dame d’Orval Monastery, one of the fourteen recognized Trappist breweries in the world. Orval is a saison that is dry hopped and finished with Brettanomyces. It is a high fermentation beer, highly carbonated with a delicious, frothy head.The aging process adds a fruity note, which strikes a subtle balance between the beer’s full-bodied yet complex flavor and bitterness.

There is a legend of the abbey's foundation, purporting to explain the name '"Orval" and the coat of arms. According to this, the widowed Mathilda of Tuscany was visiting the site, when she lost her wedding ring in a spring, to her great distress. When she prayed for the return of the ring, a trout appeared on the surface of the water with the ring in its mouth. She exclaimed "Truly this place is a Val d'Or (Golden Valley)", from which the name "Orval" is derived, and in gratitude made available the funds for the foundation of the monastery here. The abbey arms show the trout and ring. The spring still supplies water to the monastery and its brewery. Orval’s long history began with a woman, and today Orval is the only Trappist brewery with a woman in charge of all brewing operations.

Got up before everyone else today to make myself some breakfast.

Scrambled eggs, bacon, scrapple and an English muffin, paired with some Tim Hortons Dark Roast and a NB Dominga Mimosa Sour.

The wife is starting to feel better too! Hoping for a quick recovery without any issues!

Oskar Blues Barrel Aged Tenfidy imperial stout- last of my Big Stout Box. Running the clock for early morning game for a weekend hockey tournament. This is tasting good with the ice!

 

Starting off strong with a local 10% eisbock from Pollyanna, Jutenheimr.

Sorry, I guess it's not Duvel Day. Maybe I'll have a golden valley beer later.
