The "suggest a beer from you state" thread by @CentralPABeerDude prompted me to make this thread...because of comments posted in there about how this may turn out and suggestions that it may be time for a new attempt at this... @unlikelyspiderperson

There are so many "list" articles but I thought it may be fun to try and curate one together collectively. Our task...

Create a list that contains the beer that best represents each state in the US

The goal here is to pick the beer that best represents, is associated with your state, or is uniquely representative of your state. Personal preferences aside...you do not have to like or think the beer is the best in your state, THAT IS NOT THE GOAL, if you happen to like it, great. but lets see if we can one up all the "list" articles and make a definitive list together as a community, I personally think we are better suited as a group than a single writer/magazine doing this, go team BA.

I think it would be best to try and keep suggestions to "from your state", at least at first, until we are missing some from our less active states here on BA.

I will do my best to update a running list as we go once it seems an overall consensus has been made on a state...

New Jersey: I would nominate Carton Boat, it has been around and well known ever since it was born, unique in multiple ways, I still have yet to find an equivalent comparison in any other beer. Uniquely NJ, Carton Boat...

***considering the giant Anheuser Busch factory in Newark, that is clearly visible from the turnpike, maybe even Budweiser could be a suggestion... not sure...

Let's see how this goes friends...:beers:

Based on this, I have to go with Yuengling Traditional Lager for PA.

Narrowed it down to two, because I only consider Epic Brewing a recent addition to UT since the CO location no longer exists.

    1. Epic - Big Bad Baptist
    2. Wasatch - Apricot Hefeweizen

Based solely off volume it’s technically probably Stone but since they’re based in CA I don’t think they “represent” VA.

Probably I would say Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. It’s owned by AB so they have a pretty big distribution area. They’ve been pushing their 8 and 16 point IPAs as well.

There are a lot of good breweries here but I don’t think a lot of them have a big distribution area. If personal preference were allowed I would say Legend Brown Ale. It’s by no means the best beer to come out of VA but for a long time Legend was pretty much it in the Richmond area for breweries.

On the other thread, I suggested one that I rated high, yet I was the only rater on that. We have 43 breweries listed on BA, and only two that I know of distribute outside the state; Fernson and Remedy, but even then only regionally. It's down to Remedy Queen Bee Imperial Honey Cream Ale or Fernson Lion's Paw Lager. Based purely on number of ratings I'd have to go with Fernson Lion's paw, though Queen bee is rated slightly higher. Anyone else in SD have another thought on this?

It's hard to argue against Boat but I'd also consider Carton's Regular Coffee which is designed to be an iconic Jersey beer.

I think for Connecticut I would go with New England Brewing's G-Bot (formerly known as Ghandi-Bot). It's a widely known classic even if it isn't widely distributed. And it's been around for over a decade.

I know it's early but it will help with sorting out consensus, so far... we have:

    Connecticut - G-Bot
    Michigan - Bell's Two Hearted
Minnesota - Grain Belt Premium (old school) or Surly Furious (craft movement)?
New Jersey - Carton Boat or Carton Regular Coffee?
Pennsylvania - Yuengling Lager or Straub Lager?
Virginia - Devil's Backbone VIenna Lager
    South Dakota - Fernson's Lion's Paw Lager
Utah - Epic Big Bad Baptist (only cause you listed first @NorsemanOne )

Will update and keep track so long as this thread is alive, lets get all 50 by end of the week!

If you see your state listed and have other suggestions feel free to quote this post and let the discussion continue on what YOUR states beer is. Happy Monday everyone, the next best thing to having a beer is discussing beer.

***I put question marks where there has been alternate suggestions to hashout.

I'll respectfully disagree here. More Yuengling beer is brewed in Florida than Pottsville.

I'll suggest Straub Lager as it is still brewed wholly and completely in tiny St. Mary's, PA.

That is an interesting one and I gotta say you definitely have a point, both unique but Coffee has the added Jersey Diner aspect...I'm not sure I'd argue with either of these, what do our fellow New Jerseyans say???

Edit***just was thinking a little more the only reason I'd personally lean Boat is that Regular Coffee is almost tastes more like a flavored alcohol drink more than it is beer IMHO. Any thoughts on that? But as I said above let the people speak.

Literally and figuratively it's a proven 'slam dunk' - Bell's Two Hearted in Michigan.

Fair enough, but what beer do you think of when you think of PA? If I asked 100 people, I would put a bet on it that almost all, if not all, say Yuengling.

Yuengling started in PA to add.

Does Victory have a flagship beer ? I dont think they do which is weird but if they had a flagship they could rep PA.

California ... where do you even start? So many different fantastic beers to choose from, and for so many different reasons.

I'll go with Pliny the Elder from Russian River. I think it embodies the best of what a west coast IPA has to offer. Still a benchmark that a lot of brewers try to emulate, and in my opinion still hasn't been surpassed after all these years.

    :wink::+1:

I'm really interested in trying to compile this list to see if we can collectively create it and come to some sort of overall agreement. Heck I may even do some detective work in the regional forums since a lot of users only frequent those threads.

Then the fun part... try the beers that I haven't yet. Narraganset being one of them :beers:
