Damn. The fun and games continues. Just ate at Miss Delta. Me and the boys got the “meat sweats” with a side of fried chicken. All the food was amazing, but the fried chicken and the Mac and cheese stole the show. Only bad news…poor beer selection. Settled for a serviceable bock from Texas. Off to the game.

Thanks @guajolote for this thread. Been a long time follower first time visitor :joy:

Kidding on the first visit. But it was a first time visit coming with some buddies with the family back at home. Was able to check off a lot of Portland “wishlist” items. Not all of them beer. Apologies for blowing up the WNWBAYDN thread.

Can’t wait to come back with the boys and do it again. Maybe bump into some of you with better planning.

Hey y’all! Been a while and I’m a little out of the BA game in general, but headed to Portland in a couple weeks and just looking for a quick rec or two. It’s not a beer-focused trip, but I’m sure I’ll be able to make it to a decent bottle shop or two - what would you recommend I look for on shelves these days?

I’m in SoCal and fairly familiar with the heavy hitters up there but my PNW beer knowledge is basically all from 2019 and earlier, so I’m especially looking for new things, or stuff that has gone up (and to avoid stuff that’s down) in estimation recently. Hoppy stuff is my go-to but I do drink a bit of everything. And if Pfriem/Great Notion/Wayfinder/Baerlic/Little Beast etc is still the cream of the crop that’s cool too! Thanks!!

The lager game in Portland is strong these days. Hard to go wrong with anything you see from Wayfinder, Heater Allen, Away Days, Chuckanut, Zoiglhaus, and probably some others I'm forgetting at the moment.

    Specifically:
    Heater Allen Pils
Wayfinder CZAF or Terrifica (if it's around, they don't brew it all the time)
Away Days Post-Match Pils & Czech Dark Lager are great. They also make a killer brown ale (seriously). And if you see their Table Beer (a collab with Nebuleus) grab a can or four.
Upright cans now as well, so I'd suggest picking up their stuff if you see it.

Hops-wise, my favorite IPA lately has been Volatile Substance from Von Ebert.
Ruse's hops game is strong too. Hard to go wrong with anything they do.
Block 15 has some really good new IPAs out.
Boneyard cans RPM & Hop Venom now. They're not as great as they used to be, but it's still solid.
Hetty Alice IPA is a solid newcomer in the West Coast IPA category.
And if you see anything by Obelisk, I'd recommend trying it. I'm pretty over hazy IPAs, but theirs is great.

Huge thanks @guajolote for these picks! Had a great time and drank quite well, of course. Got to stop by Little Beast and Deschutes (downtown), which were both nice places to hang out if maybe not in the top tier on a strictly beer basis. Of course the farmhouse stuff at Little Beast is great tho!

Made a stop by Beermonger and picked up some super solid and fresh hoppy cans from Ruse, Hetty Alice, and Von Ebert and light stuff from Wayfinder, and a couple other lagers I’ve already forgotten. All in all a nice group of beers, and I really hope to make it back up there before too long with a little more time to focus on brewery visits.

I guess it should be mentioned that Loyal Legion recently announced an outpost at PDX, complete with 99 taps. That will fucking rule! Unfortunately, not opening until the airport renovation is complete in May 2024. Unfortunately part 2: it's pre-security. But there's plenty of time to get your TSA pre check if you haven't already.

    Still, should be awesome.

Ridiculous red tape. They have been open for a long time, why wouldn't Portland just write them up a temporary certificate etc?

Greetings, people. I am Steve D.
When I was in Tokyo in early April, I managed to scrounge a ticket to a collaboration beer festival in Shibuya titled "Hood to Fuji". Here is the BeerAdvocate thread in which I describe it.
The publicity for this beer festival proclaimed that in even-numbered years, this beer festival is held in Portland. I swing into this rubric frequently, and I do not recall any mention of this in previous years. Can anybody here elucidate when this festival, which might be titled "Fuji to Hood", was held?

Looks like July 16, 2022. I remember thinking it sounded like a cool event, especially with the food pairings (I think the previous iteration - according to that site it was probably in 2018 - had a food pairing for each beer, though the 2022 event doesn't look to have done that).

making a short weekend trip to portland this weekend, what are the best beers you've had on tap lately?

I read on Jeff Alworth's blog that fracture has a nice NZ pils that I might seek out

Depends on what you like, but Belmont Station is currently in the midst of a pFriem month long event. They have some pretty interesting beers on tap at present.

Also, Arch Bridge still has some remnants from their weekend anniversary event.

I'm mostly a lager guy but I'll drink anything. the taplist at belmont looks great, has a little bit of everything.
Arch looks pretty good too, I haven't been to Oregon city in a long time, might have to make a trip over there.

If you're into lagers, I can't recommend Chuckanut enough. Wayfinder is great as well. You really can't go wrong at either location, IMHO.

great list. what tier does living haus fall on these breweries? any other new breweries on the radar worth checking out?

of the beer bars, which is my go -to if i only have one stop

    thank you in advance

Living Haus is still less than a year old, and IMO the jury is still out, at least as far as being in the top tier of Portland breweries. Still, everything I've had from them has been solid and I wouldn't steer you away from there if that's where you wanted to go.

As far as beer bars, my top two are Beermongers and Belmont Station. Belmont has a larger taplist and to-go selection, but Beermongers just has a great vibe and is literally steps away from Apex, Baerlic, and Chuckanut. Plus, it's not like you're going to be disappointed with the selection at Beermongers if that can be your only stop.
