I could not disagree more. If the alcohol is the main reason you drink expensive craft beer, then you need to rethink your spending habits. You should stick to Steel Reserve or King Cobra from the convenience store, and you probably shouldn’t be on BeerAdvocate. In my humble opinion, craft beer can only be enjoyed in moderation. And if something doesn’t taste good, it should be left on the table or poured down the drain.

I don't drain pour often, but I definitely do it more than I used to. I used to share your mentality that it was money going down the drain. But now I realize that the money is going down the drain whether I piss it out, or dump the beer in my sink. Alcohol takes a toll on the liver and the calorie intake, I ain't choking down something that's whack just because I spent money on it. There's way, way too much good beer out there these days and, let's face it, if you have enough money to enjoy craft beer and talk about it online, then you have enough money to replace the occasional drain pour.

Black Ops is not the beer it used to be. Until 2 years ago it was fermented twice. The second time with Champagne yeast and sold in 750s for 20/25 dollars a bottle. It was great. Black Ops being sold now is much lower in price but not as good.

How about a porch pour? I picked up a single of Rinkuškiai Before-After Triple Bock at a Total Wine in Virginia a few years ago. A half-liter of 12% beer for two bones? What could possibly go wrong? Turned out to be a fusel bomb. I dumped it off the deck and swore off Lithuanian triple bocks forever.

It's our bsmt mud room laundry sink and actually in the 2 yrs that I've been on beer advocate I've only drain poured 3 beers due to the fact that they were poison. Expired or infected.

Early on Weyerbacher had problems. I would buy a case and cross my fingers. Bad cases were brought back and replaced with a new case that was bad sometimes. I gave up for a few years. I went to a BBQ and there was a Weyerbacher mix case. The beers were all good. I went back and have continued to buy their beers when available. Not seen much recently but the BW.

    Enjoy

I know...Ha! When I looked at the pic it dawned on me that it was gross. In fact I cleaned some cymbals the other day and the residue from that stuff makes it worse. Lots of house paint in there as well. Hopefully won't have anymore DPs soon. Going to clean it now...:joy:

I am not a wasteful person and have choked down many beers in the past but I don't do it anymore because I can feel kind of blah afterwards. And with being on a stricter diet I am not going to take in the calories/carbs/alcohol for something I am not really enjoying. So with that being said DIPAs are probably the style I have dumped the most and not because they were bad per se, but because by 1/2-3/4 of the way through it the beer was just too much and as it warmed the flavors got out of whack for me.

I am more mindful of my purchases these days and of course you never truly know how a beer will hit your palate until you try it but by reading the beer description and reviews I can usually tell if I will like it or not and I no longer have the subconscious beer ticking/must try it all thing going on.

Why are you dumping paint down the drain?

I am approaching 5,000 rated beers, and it's definitely <10 times the number of times I haven't finished a beer (all due to infections or a badly oxidized can). Most "bad" beers are just boring or lack of flavor.

Generally, I think people talking about constantly "drain pouring" beers comes across as stupid - either wasteful or pompous.

I didn't say it was the main reason. I said it was one of the reasons. If it isn't then why do you drink beer at all? If you can't admit that the relaxing effects of alcohol is part of the charm of beer then you really are lying to yourself and your opinions don't mean much here and this site isn't for you.

If you are at a point in your life where the alcohol is affecting your liver and you have to watch your calories then maybe all your beers should be drain pours. Just take a sip and pour out the rest. If you have that kind of money then you are doing yourself a favor by doing that.

Then I would suggest you stick to NA beers. Nothing wrong with that, but its just a different experience.

Recent drain pours have consisted of
Alcohol impacts people's liver regardless of how much they consume. One doesn't need to have a problem with alcohol for it to have an effect. I limit my alcohol consumption (no more than 10 standard drinks per week and no more than four standard drinks in a given evening). I do this not because I have any liver or obesity problems but because I don't want any liver or obesity problems.

I would argue it's stupid to consume something you aren't liking and enjoying. Beer comes in 12-16+ oz vessels so if I want to try something that isn't at a brewery I don't have much choice but to gamble; and anyone who has been into this hobby for as long as some of us have been we have had to gamble quite a bit.

Or we just grow up and the alcohol isn't that important anymore, we realize we need to be careful with it for health reasons, etc. I welcome all opinions here and respect the folks who aren't cracking open a beer and saying, "Hell yeah, time to get buzzed!" and slowly sipping on it and sharing their thoughts and feelings. But on the same token I have no issues with the folks who ARE drinking to get buzzed as long as they are doing so responsibly and not trying to spin to me that it's a-OK to do this regularly and all will be fine with their health.
